Are You Ready For Boss Katana Gen 3/Mk III? - NOT A RELEASE/REVIEW VIDEO

- This is not a sneak peak at the Gen 3 Katana. This is simply a short discussion about it and what most of us hope the new Katana will feature. If you saw the title and thought otherwise, I'm sorry. It's just a question and wasn't meant to be clickbait in any way.

EDIT ON RELEASE DAY: So..."Meet the new Boss. Same as the old Boss"? Well, not exactly the same, but some upgrades and at least the price is only slightly higher. Main differences: one extra amp settings called "Pushed" Blue Tooth capable with the optional add-on (about $55 USD), USB-C with mobile app and new desktop software. Also stereo headphones out. The IR feels for rec out is a little different as well with more of a graphic interface. Sorry, folks--no tuner. The 100 has a new contour button and cab resonance switch like the Artist. MK1 and 2 patches are compatible. I may have missed something new, but I'm not really impressed. I'll still probably upgrade to one eventually.
No AIRD... I thought just like you, that they would integrate that new tech on this one. The ME-90 sounds amazing
@@ElDami Yeah, I was disappointed. I have a review unit and while some of the updates are nice, the addition of AIRD would have been a big seller.
A looper would be cool
You are the only Boss type channel I sub to because you are independent. No hype just genuine thoughts and advice. Appreciate the time and effort you put into the channel. I'd love a good app with cloud storage access for patches etc. and USB C!!
I'm really hoping Boss fixes the Exchange so you can download/import patches from the Tone Exchange directly from the app, whether it's desktop or mobile.
@@Guitarnivore fingers crossed. Some simple UI changes would make a huge difference.
@@Guitarnivorei had a quick play with the gen 3 app. The ability to load a patch from the cloud is a great improvement.
@lescoobs That's awesome. I'm hoping,.like they have planned with the Go, that you'll be able to load them from the tone exchange inside the app. I was hoping for a lot more improvements/upgrades, but I guess perhaps I was hoping for too much.
@@Guitarnivore I'm happy enough with the upgrades. More would have been nice but with only a slight price increase I think they did a decent job. I'll go from a 50 mk2 to the Artist gen 3.
I got a Katana Mk-1 head back when they first came out. Got the GA-FC too. I'm happy with it.
I'm interested to see what they have done with the new Gen-3 unit. Slight upgrade, or game changer?
We will soon find out.
Totally agree with your video, IR loader x A.I.R.D. sound to me the only way to go to keep Katana on top of the scene (i doubt they still working on C.O.S.M. tbh). I saw on reddit a lot of people asking for fancy stuff and expecting to be cheaper as the MKII is which is unrealistic, in the same time many of them looks young so it could explain this. I enjoyed your Katana tutorial (had to rewatch couple of times your 3h full course) it help me a lot. I will looking for your review if Boss send you ones (still unrealistic to expect a full review at its release, Boss modelers usually takes month to explore tha'ts why i don't consider it as a beginner friendly amp), have a GA-FC/MKII combo since 6 month and i love it, if it's as i expect it i can see me getting the head version since i have access to 4x12 cabs. Greeting from France!
Yeah, I don't know how far in advance they send out units to those bigger channels, but it seems to be a lot to learn in a short period of time.
The reason why I have not bought any of the newer iterations of the amp is that they still don’t have stereo outs, no dual L&R delays or better off freely assignable blocks, and no IR loader. This would be the difference between a really nice product to a full blown competitive solution.
The amp needs a better chasis and speaker. I would even argue that Neodymium speakers deserve a second look, it would certainly be brilliant to reduce the weight further.
Let's hope this one comes with the AIRD tones and I would really like a dedicated noisegate knob. Tho it's weird they put out the AIR EX when the MK3 is coming....
Yeah, the noise gate is a no-brainer control to add to the exterior.
This tells me I should sell my 100 mk2 in white before the prices tank when the new ones are released. I never use mine and its like brand new with the box, footswitch and everything. On the flip side it will be a great time to buy the mk2 used!
over the years I have watched so many practice amps or whatever you want to call them reviews , and Boss Katana still is the one to beat for the price it's offered at , I would love a proper attenuator like the Princeton Tone Master if they did that wow that would be a game changer, definitely headed to purchasing one next year, I will be using this channel as a reference guide ,
Is the power selector knob0.5w, 25w, 50w 100w considered an attenuator?
"Get a pedal, get a clip-on" - Wasn't the main concept of this whole Katana/modeler thing getting rid of separate pedals and equipment? For me the tuner is one of the elementary improvements of the Katana Go and I'd love an integrated tuner.
Touche, but clip-ons are cheap and easy. I do like having the tuner on the Go, but I could do give or take it. Some folks see an amp not having a deal breaker and I think that is just silly.
@@Guitarnivoreclip-ons are very hard to see in bright sunlight on outside gigs
@@EddyfyingArt So little LED's on am amp is going to be easier? for gigging, I'd rather have something more reliable like a good old Boss TU-3.
I would expect to see a tuner in the app (and I expect some sort of app, otherwise they missed the mark), but I'm personally not bothered about a tuner on the amp itself. Perhaps they could do something with the GA-FC EX footswitch?
I woudn't want a tuner in the amp, personally. I could see a kid that didn't have any gear might dig that the most, but I just don't think it's necessary or cool on the amp.
I have just ordered a new Boss Katana Air Ex Wireless Modelling 35 watt Amp, available after twenty days ( from Singapore). I think I didn't make wrong decision. And now I knew that Generation 3rd Katana Series are going to be launched soon. Greetings from Kathmandu, Nepal 🇳🇵.
Just a looper would be cool.
Damn man, I just discovered your channel and I wish I had before! I also laughed at the tuner comments, couldn't agree more. I have a couple of polytune pedals and clipons everywhere. Why would you bother with the shitty tuner built in the amp? I preordered the Gen 3 head and can't wait for it to arrive. I'm using a Mk2 100 watt combo now which I modded with a cab out and a switch to swap between the internal and the cab as needed. Love your channel, and I just subscribed.
Welcome aboard. I should have a Gen 3 for review pretty soon!
Built in Bluetooth transmitter/reciever
Greatly simplified tone studio updates
Angled front panel with all parameter control knobs
Looper
Auto volume leveling circuit for saved presets/patches
The main thing I could wish for is an IR loader, that would be huge if you could do that on this amp. I just hope the IR loader would be good and not crap where you have to be very finicky with it.
I concur. Just make it simple an effective.
I upgraded to the Katana Artist MKII just a few months ago. If I had known this new line was coming out I would have saved the funds.
100% agree about the tuner. I've got enough clip ons and pedal tuners, don't need one built into an amp.
Personally I'd like to see an expanded footswitch with a lot more buttons so I don't have to step through so many buttons just to do simple task. Just a personal wish.
I bet. I bet there were a lot of folks that did the same with the MK-1. Nature of the beast I guess, but the great thing is, that MK2 artist is still amazing, regardless. I had one and went through a time where I bought and sold some stuff. I regret selling the artist. That speaker alone was great.
You can never win the upgrade game. Get what you can afford when you buy. There WILL ALWAYS be something better tomorrow.
I have the artist mk II. I dont regret it and I will never replace it until it can't be repaired.
@@jasonwojcik As an IT Tech, don't I know it. Obsolete as soo as you hear about. I only regret selling my Artist. Whatever comes after this amp, I'll still be impressed with what it does!
I love the Waza speaker in the Artist so much I use it as a powered speaker for my Gx100.
Bluetooth midi.
Bluetooth Audio.
Boss Tone Studio with session.
Signal chain, 5 before and 5 after amp slots.
Stereo line out.
Stereo Effects.
20 amp types and variations.
Two 10" Waza speakers.
Arteries auto tune.
Poor guy, being mocked by a mockingbird.
They're bastards. 😂
Drag and drop signal chain. ToneX pedal captures. Pedal stacking. 😊
A good dishwasher would be a nice upgrade for the katana, maybe a toaster 😁😆😂 just kidding. Yeah I agree tuner is just something else to suck more memory that could be used for something more tone improvement etc.. one thing for the 50 Watt version a speaker upgrade would be nice But probably jump the list price up..
I would have used my Katana Mk2 much, much more if it had a STEREO (!!!!!!!) headphone connection, and preferably wireless as well. But what comes to this coming new gen, I am very confident that they again offer some very irritating feature deficiencies in their new product. I think they probably for some reason enjoy doing that.
it just needs a noise gate on the panel. yeah a tuner is pointless idk why ppl keep saying that .i use my katana as a power amp now for my pod hd500x. but noise gates are a must
That would be nice. At least a button with an acceptable preset.
I use my Katana Artist as a powered speaker for my Gx100 and love it
I have the same setup and it rips.
@@stormwatcher117 oh i know i actually use the boss 212 cab too it sounds great i was suprised
all katana has tuner is secret feature
It just needs a little screen like the headphone version that shows a tuner and what effect you have selected without having to refer to a chart to see what “yellow” is. A noise gate button would be nice.
And for god sake, put the controls close to the FRONT of the amp where the user is.
Scott tell how you really feel about an onboard tuner for the Boss MKIII
I try not to use profanity in videos, but every now and again 10 years of service grabs the reigns.
@@Guitarnivore it’s all good brother. I enjoy your videos with or without the superlatives.
I'm guessing the re-sale value of my 100mk2 may be going way down, following the release of a mk3. Oh well.
?built in blue tooth receiver (with optional sender)?
I'll probably be keeping my katana 50 mk2 for a while since it's still more than good enough with the katana airstep.
But I'm excited to see what the mk3 will bring to the table
The price is going to be a big factor for me. My 100 mk2 is still great too, but I'll probably try to get one to demo from zZounds.
Boss have listened to the masses and the Gen 3 is the same as the MK2 but with a tuner. Everyone's happy! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
😂😂😂 As disappointing as that would be, it would still be hilarious!!🤣🤣
On-off for expression pedals and add something to even the volume between the different patches.
I would like to see a "premium" footswitch with most of features you discussed here... Thats where the 'sceen' should go!.
Keeping the 'base unit' all the way up to and including the flag ship model sub $500. IR's def. have to be part of the amp thoough.
The phone app def. should be a thing.
Supposedly.. the TH-camr Marty Swartz (not sure how his last name is spelled..) from Marty's Music said in a live video a couple days ago that it will hit streets on Thursday.. and he was using one in the video also. I can't remember what stream it is though.
Someone posted a screen shot yesterday in my Facebook group of a countdown timer for it, but I can't seem to find it. The timer had only like a day and a half left on it and that was about 15 hours ago. I guess we'll know soon enough.
@Guitarnivore Indeed. As far as the new features the Gen 3 might have.. I'm hoping to be able to stack at least 2 (or more) overdrive/distortion pedals in the chain. Anything else that's added would be a bonus.. but a USB-C port on the back would be nice and maybe the updated sound chip like you said would be good also.. if it had at least those 2 things.. I'd probably shell out the cash and get it.
I dunno man, i review a lot of gear from BOSS over the last few years and never once have they ever dictated what i could and could not say, they seem really cool but they do need obviously to not put out reserved info ahead of time. If your contacts were willing to send you one for a launch review id certainly tune in to see your thoughts
They must express talking points to all of the big channels they pay and send review units out to because it always sound like they're sticking to some kind of guide. It's probably part of a contract or verbal obligation. I'm just small potatoes, so I wouldn't expect either. I'll definitely try to get one from zZounds before I buy one when it's released.
Line out and send return on the 50 model, Better configuration with GAFC, A display to see which preset is on…these are the features I would need
If the 50 is an affordable unit and it had a send/return and GF-AC compatible, I will definitely opt for it instead of the 100.
@@Guitarnivore I guess many musicians are interested in the 50 rather than the 100 version now, I see more “quiet” musicians.
Also it will be perfect for the less weight!
Come on Boss, let us know
Get a Katana Artist and forget every other Katana. They’re absolutely incredible and probably the best amp on the market.
I had one and I can't disagree with you! I went through a phase in 2022 where I started shifting around gear and trying new things and I sold it. Bad decision, but I still love the 100 MK2.
A new design language of course and many quality improvements.
I anticipate a few more AIRD amp models like the one's found in IT-2 & ME-90 would make nice marketing; Catalyst offers 12 models.
USB-C for sure.
Hope for XLR DI out like ME-90B has and it is a pity ME-90 does not have one.
Better handling of AMP IN signals moving towards an FRFR cabin style.
That bluetooth dongle a few of their products have, would be a nice touch for sofa players to not have to go to the amp :P
No LCD or any other screen, it would be against Katana's concept; a mobile phone app would be better.
Price wise would be certainly more than today's models, but hopefully not that much, up by 20% maybe.
I see it as a direct competitor to Line6 Catalyst CX models, thus pricing would move along items in line.
We don't need an on board tuner (background music like Pink Floyd's song)
All great suggestions. Cost is definitely going to be a factor for most people that already have a Mk2 I think.
@@Guitarnivore So we have the same design, a new amp "Pushed", USB-C, Bluetooth and no XLR ... waiting for pricing
@@AngeloGiannatos-rs6pryeah, I watched earlier on Guitar Geek and put it in a pinned comment. $399 for the 100 and $299 for the 50. Not too bad, but I'm not impressed.
@@Guitarnivore In Europe it is €350 for the K50, €430 for K50EX and €515 for K100 (prices include VAT)
nah needs the tuner hell...line 6 had it on the floorboard and amp that was year 2000..please get a good poly pitch shifter that doesn't sound like a chorus
I have to agree, a pitch-shifter that does a lot better!
I want a footswitch and I want a Presence control on the 50 watt and I want the Waza speaker on the 50 and 100 watt. You should not have to get the Artist to get a Waza speaker.
In general really, I don't get the BOSS Katana. It uses BOSS GT100 technology with the exception of the Brown sound which is pretty much the WAZA technology. If you want the latest BOSS amp modeling technology get the GT1000 or the GT1000 Core.
The GT-1000 has the AIRD tech, like the ME-90. Hopefully the Gen 3 has that. If they just recycle the current software and don't make a drastic change, I'll be disappointed.
I need help updating the Gen 3. Had no trouble with mk2 but the gen 3 seems different
Are you sure you need to update and did you check the firmware version first? Are you following the process in the link here? It seems like it's almost the same exact process as the MK2. I don't have a Gen 3 yet so I have nothing else to go off of. www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/katana-100_gen_3/updates_drivers/2330471a-e3a2-4cd3-a0e5-7249b7d332fd/
@@Guitarnivore hi, yes pretty sure. The procedures different to check the software version. With the GEN three it says turn the power on while holding the reverb button should have booster light green mod light dark FX dark delay, lighted, and green reverb red. Mine has a green booster and an orange reverb only.
@@fiveholefurl Okay. Sounds like you need the update. The procedure is slightly different, mainly the buttons you have to press in step 2 (and as you stated, when checking firmware). It appears that as soon as you disconnect the USB in step 6, the update should automatically occur. (On the MK2 you had to press the panel button)
I think the best way to improve the Katana Mk2 is to give it Bluetooth so one can add patches with the phone.
katana gen2 is GT100 lock feature (fxfloorboard to unlock)
I hope mk3 is GT1000 and someone unlock feature
Katana pedalboard. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
The ME-90 is pretty much that.
@@Guitarnivore I'll have to get me one. But I think I'll wait just in case the new GEN 3 includes an actual Katana pedalboard.
I'm still getting to know my Artist MKII. I'm honestly not sure what I'd want to see in the next generation, except perhaps even better tones. But I can't complain from where I stand. Question - have any of you ever had to reset your Katana because your patches started sounding like crap? Happened to me. The reset seemed to get things right again. It was odd. I wish that didn't happed. Perhaps I'd like that not to happen on the next generation of amps.
Yes, I've had to factory reset mine before to kind of reboot it.
add an effects loop on the model 50
In this age I would think a tuner would be a curiosity.
For my level of playing I think the Mk II 100 is good enough and I could not see purchasing the III. With that said a screen instead of red light would be great, that is the one thing I did like on the Mustang when I was shopping amps. My only other peeve, and I have no idea if that has to do with the amp, is latency when recording from amp to cpu via usb.
Have you ever tried monitoring with headphones from the amp? I haven't tried with the Katana, but with the ME-90, Go and IR-2, when I record to Studio One and use the device as input/output, it works great and there is no latency. I've been meaning to try it with the amp as well.
@@Guitarnivore No I have not, will have too though; to be honest I never even thought of it! Thanks.
I just tried it and it worked great. Drum track came through the headphones through the amp nice and clear. You may have to adjust your volume control either from the amp volume or from tone studio, but it worked out nicely. I never tried it because the amp was always just a little too far, but I bought a headphone extension a couple weeks ago and used it tonight.
I’m hoping it’s not very expensive
Me too.
Fx loop in 50 watt
To all those people that say they are not upgrading, I bet the majority of you have your credit card out tomorrow
The problem with USB-C is that the connector is smaller and more delicate. If they don't need the more advanced capabilities (speed, latency, etc.) of USB-C, (and I don't think they do in this case), there may be no need to make the move.
USB-c is a physical interconnect. It can carry anything from USB 1 to thunderbolt 4.
USB-A, and B can also do USB 3, 3.2 gen II etc.
USB-c doesn’t offer any speed advantages or latency advantages. The manufacturer can spec either port type to operate at any speed.
The benefits of USB-C include reversibility, and actually more durability. The USB-C port is rated to more insertion cycles than either USB-A or B.
Pitch shifter function
If the mk2 had one, i dont remember it 😂
It does, but it's not very good in my opinion.
I have artist MkII & I will probably go for GT-1000 Core as an expansion for it instead of upgrading to MkIII. It has A.I.R.D, IR loader, definitely more chain options than MkIII will have. MkII will fullfil the role of powered speaker, especially considering that artist speaker is so good
That Waza speaker is really good!
Boss is the Nintendo of the music industry, they do what they want, and don't care what anyone says lol.
Accurate analogy!!😆
Yeah would love if my artist didn’t sound like garbage
I've never heard anyone say their Artist sounded even remotely bad until now. How long have you had it?
@@Guitarnivore also know atleast 4 people who had issues with dialing it in return the artist and m2
This guy has no idea what he’s talking about. Boss themselves say the katana doesn’t use COSM. A Quick Look at the pcb will show that the gain stages are analogue just like their pedals. The digital effects and cab sim output are a custom digital solution which are neither COSM nor AIRD, again according to boss themselves.
Link me to where Boss has said that. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but just about everywhere you read says it uses the same COSM firmware (or at least some of it) as the GT-100 and that's why the sneaky amps work with it.
Thank you for saying that the Kat is not COSM
@iancurrie8844 no way katana is solid state analog preamp gain staging, preamp and FX is all DSP
@@shatteredsquare OK but yes it is. Just look at the PCB and you can see the gain stages. In 2016, Boss said that the Katana uses the "Tube Logic" from its Blues Cube developed by Roland. That "tube logic" in the blues Cube also has analog gain stages. You'll note that "Tube Logic" is separate and different from "COSM".
