Your professionalism is great here! I found myself listening to this track recently on a binge, again 😂 I was just wrapping up my days in Beijing and will head back to my hometown, and Beijing is Song Dongye’s hometown….. What a poet he is, his lyrics are just otherworldly…. And I feel privileged to be a native Chinese speaker that I can somehow comprehend the dense information in this very track. I believe this track also won him a best lyricist award in Taiwan ❤
Thank you for reviewing one of the best Chinese urban folk/ballad songs. If you understand mandarin and contemporary Chinese history, you will be truly amazed by the lyrics (It's a god level lyrics, and I think any direct English translation will lost its original impact on the listener.) The MV is also well constructed. It perfectly illustrates Song Dongye's understanding of two types of people, two stages of life, and two psychological situations. I believe the whole song is trying to say that "What many people are seek crazily happens to be vain".

My favorite mando pop. Excited to see an English based review, since I think this song would be a good choice to discover the flavor and richness of Madarin music.
How I read the lyrics besides what's called out is that it expresses an internal struggle. So he grabs those inspiration from others then what? Has he made himself comfortable, insightful and calm? Has he reached his ambition or is he lost? And can he reconciliate with himself? The cleverly rhymed lines of folk tales makes it really relatable and kind of painful.
And it's good to learn your opinion from the instrument perspective, the utilization of different techniques.

I hate cancel culture. Song is one of my favorite Chinese folk song writer. Hope he rise again for his talent and we have a more tolerant society.
