How To Convert Bar End Shifter To Downtube Shifter 1X9 Speed Conversion Bike Blogger

  • I noticed I had braze-on bosses on the downtube of my bicycle where my cable adjusters are located, so I figured I'd try a downtube shifter for now.
    Shimano bar end shifters comes with the Shimano part number 643 4300 lever boss cover (flat washer). They should work with any size downtube, but for standard steel frames with smaller downtubes (1-1/8" diameter) Shimano part number 643 3810 (curved washer) will look cleaner. My frame is actually oversized steel (1-1/4") so I use the flat washer.
    The advantages of downtube shifters include a shorter cable run which means a better working derailleur, simple to install, less prone to failure, clean look, and the ability to shift very quickly between gears unlike a typical brifter shift lever. Oh, and you can operate both front and rear downtube shift levers with the same hand if you got a front derailleur.
    The disadvantage to downtube shifters is basically that they are not as easily accessible as they would be near the brake lever or on the handlebars where your hands normally are, and so probably not a good option for anyone uncomfortable riding with one hand on the handlebars or unfamiliar with braking using only the front brake.
    I do have a Paul Thumbie so I could install a thumb shifter instead on the handlebars in the future if I want. We'll see.

    Thanks! Managed to change the front shifter on my LHT from the bar end to the downtube in a minute or two. Shifts better and is a few grams lighter.

    @SuperSayanFitness Yes you can use the thumbies next to the brake levers. I've seen people do it, and it was my original intent but for now I'm using a downtube shifter and it's working out well for me.

    My downtube shifter advantage is that I was able to install bullhorns on my bike.

    I have a shimano SL-S441 index shifter (2x6). I want to replace the knobs to metal ones. Could I do a straight swap like this from a downtube shifter to my stem clamp?

    I've ridden a downtube shifter, I feel like i loose efficiency having to reach down to shift gears. Maybe i just wasnt experienced enough but it would cause me to take my eyes off the road.

    Can i switch my downtube shifters to bar end or just handlebar mounted easily? what would be the way to do this? i love the look of my downtube shifters and would be happy if i can keep them as the indexing with my 2x6 gearset is also working quite well

    i want to convert my downtube to bar end shifters is there any differences? should i use bar end?

      Bar end are within close reach if you ride drops, stem shifters are within reach if you're up on the flat portion of your bars more often, and STI (or "brifters") if you're more prone to riding forward. All have advantages and disadvantages.

      +Patrick94GSR Still a very good possibility, but for now I'm running the downtube shifter.

    I thought these where only for really old bikes. This what you're using because of your handlebars?

    • @BikeBlogger
      @BikeBlogger  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +cook7772 I'm using a downtube shifter because my bike has a braze-on for it and I'm enjoying it for now. I could use a thumb shifter in the future if I desire.

      +BikeBlogger a thumb shifter on that handlebar? Well I used to think Bar ends where ugly until I put on my bike for wrist pain. I had a change of heart.
      Thanks for answering question. I think I only seen thoughts handlebars on fixed gear.

    Looks ace, you're probably OK with downtube because you're so used to single speed.

      downtube shifters are easy. you just lack skills

  • @mikehascats26
    @mikehascats26 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    you should point out that modern bikes are not compatible with downtube shifters because they do not have the braze ons for them

    All bard end shifters can be installed on downtube braze ons? I am looking at the microShift 10 speed and would like to convert an 8 speed bike into a 10 speed bike. Thank You.

      did you find out if microShift barend shifters work as DT shifters?

    • @byhsu6140
      @byhsu6140 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yellowsheeps no i didn't. I was able to find a 9 spd DT shifter/ 9 spd cassette, so i went that way instead.
