My daughter and I were flying to Boston for a quick-turn-less-than-36-hour trip, and because I thought we could park in the garage at the terminal I didn’t make a Plan B for parking and that, along with the slowest security day ever at Hartsfield had us in a dead sprint to our gate, which of course was all the way at the end of the concourse. They had already shut the doors and we stood there catching our breath as the plane pushed back. We got on standby for the next flight (90 minutes later) and we were the last two on board. We didn’t get to sit together but we made it on. Lessons learned. That was the first and hopefully last time I ever miss a flight.

Can't say I've ever been that late for a flight...but this is NOT because am a "perfect passenger"...it's because I find the entire process of getting to an airport and boarding a flight to be very stressful, and the only way I've found to handle the stress is to get to the airport very early so I can get baggage checks and security out the way so that I can then sit calmly in the waiting area listening to music and/or reading a book until boarding starts....I envy seasoned travelers who calmly navigate airports and never get stressed!

I get there about 1hr - 40mins before the flight leaves. Which most people feel like it’s rushing but I’m relaxed. I check my bags which shouldn’t take long. I have TSA precheck and Clear so I pass TSA in less than 5 minutes. Then I’m at my gate just in time to not wait long.

All well and good, but the biggest risk of missing a flight is not being able to get to an airport because of rail or road problems. I allow many hours, but one time a lorry had overturned on the motorway leading to the airport. There were massive delays. I had to run like crazy once I arrived and only just made it. Glad I've never actually missed a flight so far, but came to close to it in 2022 when a) my train connections to the airport were heavily affected by construction works and b) the security employee suddenly took it very meticulously with checking the double-sewed pockets of my jeans. Through a combination of heavy traffic, delays returning a rental car, extremely long security lines in Orlando, and a long way to the gate, I came within one minute of missing my flight. When I got there the door was open and I asked the attendant if I could board. She said yes and that I was the last passenger they were waiting for. I got down to the end of the ramp just as the final passengers were about to step onto the plane. If I had been one minute later I probably would have missed the flight. I breathed a sigh of relief when I sat down in my seat.

I was on my way back home and just landed after a 12h leg, and waiting at the gate for my last 2h stretch, when I run into a friend who also was flying the same route. Both tired after previous long flights, we started talking about our trips. We totally lost time and awareness, missing both gate closing announcements as well as personal calls. The seating we had where shared across several gates, so seats around us where never empty. When we realised that we where late, we started running towards the gate, only to see the green light change to red. We where sooo close to making it, but they did not let us board. They had already unloaded our baggage they said.

I once lost a flight, I could still see the queue at the other side of the door in the terminal so they could have actually let me in as people were still boarding, but they were dealing with a Karen that was overbooked and kept insulting everybody, including me, because "she couldn't take my seat because I already passed security before the flight closed".
I also had the completely opposite experience, they knew that I was already in the airport and when I arrived to the gate with no hope because there were nobody around except the ground crew and the screen said "CLOSED", I asked them if I had lost my flight and they smiled back and said, "no, don't worry, we were waiting for you". They asked me to wait because I had to be escorted to the plane as the finger was apparently already configured in an insecure way that could have allowed me to go into areas not allowed for me or something like that.

In general being late is a major pet peeve of mine. If I can be on-time, you can be on-time. I do understand unforeseen circumstances, but in general in life, be on time all the time! Thats why im always 2 hrs minimum before my flight and i always choose flights that are not during peak times where and when possible. Overnight flights from South Africa tend to have early morning connections in Europe and America which is very busy, but we always book to have at least a 4 hr layover. Thank heavens i dont travel for work anymore, but even then flights in SA were usually very much on time and easy to plan for. In Europe, Asia and America i think this gets more tricky.

I have missed some connecting flights due to mechanical issues on an flight, not fun. On one such instance there were several passengers whose flights were also cancelled leading to a lot of passengers who needed to connect to the same destination from the same airport, with limited but somehow fully booked onward flights. One evening I was delayed by a slow rental car return at a small Southern airport and ended up getting to the to the gate as the aircraft was pushing back. I commented "Damn, I wont be able to tuck in my kids tonight" to the agent at the gate and he got on his hand-held radio and asked them to return, which took a few minutes. I boarded to a round of applause and grabbed my seat. After the obligatory safety presentation the Purser came down to my seat and asked if I would like to say anything. I asked her if I could stand and express my thanks and apology to everyone for delaying them which was granted to another round of applause.

I had a missed flight this summer, I got the notifications that it had been delayed 45 minutes due to mechanical issues so I arrived 45 minutes later than I originally planned.
I was having trouble checking in on the app and then when I got to the airport I found that there was no kiosk or front desk agents (pre-security) to help me do the check in. They had already gone off duty as if the flight hadn't been delayed.
I rebooked for a few days later and I already had a few more days off work anyway. I got to visit more with family in a cool different place. When I checked in on the app for that flight it was fine.
Anyway it worked out great and I guess I was super lucky to get the deals I did on the last minute flight hotel and car.
I could have flown out same or next day for $700, instead I flew out 3 days later and the new flight, hotel, and car were about $650 total. Not a terrible price for the lesson. In future I'll always check in on the app 24 hours ahead. If there's an error I'll go to the airport right away, a day ahead, to fix it in-person for tomorrow's flight.

Entire, predictable back-and-forth ensues, which I eavesdrop on. In exasperation he yells, "But my watch says I have two more minutes!" to which the calm, cool as a cucumber agent deadpanned, "Unfortunately neither you nor your watch were here when you needed to be.". I've never missed a flight. But the last time I flew, the Ryanair flight was delayed. Had it not been, I might have missed boarding. You see, I waited at the departure gate given on the main departures display on entering the terminal. After the original flight due time (I had headphones on listening to music, oblivious to announcements) I noticed the screen at my departure gate still said Brussels. So I checked the departures screen to see that my new departure gate was downstairs. Thankfully I had an hour to make the ten minute walk.
I also had a connection flight cancelled in the past. I came off a flight in Heathrow and changed terminals to get my connecting flight back to Dublin. But when I got to the other terminal my flight had been cancelled. Thankfully there was one last flight to Dublin that was far from full so it was easy to get my boarding pass changed. I remember I had not just the window seat, but the 3 seats on the left of that row all to myself so it worked out well and was a very comfortable flight.

I have personally experienced this but the outcome was different - boarded the flight and realised I left my iPad at the lounge - the air crew permitted me to retrieve the device. Upon my return the gates were closed with my luggage still on the flight. It is true this is often a one way operation, and no on airside could physically open the gate and they had to call ground security to reopen the doors

I had a good experience on missing a flight in Russia. It was 2014 and I lost track of time and the gate was closed. When I asked about my luggage the girl called someone and then told me they stopped the plane from moving and they will escort me through a backdoor and speedcar to the plane and they brought the stairs for my sake. I admire Russians for being flexible and their abillity to bending the rules.

I actually missed 1 flight this year (and it was close to becoming 2 missed flights). During August I was flying with Aegean from Rhodes to Thessaloniki via Athens with my aunt and the flight was delayed because it failed on the pre boarding check in Athens and we barely made it to our connecting flight wheh we arrived (I had just enough time to head the airport toilets and eat a sandwich before boarding). However my return flight got delayed to the point I missed my connecting fligh, once again due to high traffic in Athens. It wasn't just me who was unlucky, as there were other passengers on that flight that would miss their connecting flights. After arriving in Athens we stayed at a hotel close to the airport, however I only got to sleep for an hour before heading back as I was rebooked to the next flight which left first thing in the morning (around 4 or 5 am). By the time I finally got home it was 6am and the sun was rising

Have to correct you on the fuel: fuel uplift is calculated based on preliminary information, such as booking figures or "checkin closed" figures. Not all airlines permit fueling with passengers on board (and those who do must have and adhere to safety routines), so all that typically happens when boarding is closed, as far as fuel is concerned, is verifying fuel on board against final numbers.
Regarding reopening boarding: as you say, it can be done. Whether it will be done depends on factors such as airline rules, time available, progress in finalising documentation (wheight and balance sheet, +++), your behaviour, and why you were late to the gate in the first place.
If you're just tardy and behave like an a**, expect to have the book thrown at you. If we think you have a good reason and that we are able to accommodate you without causing additional delays, we're often happy to help.
The most memorable moment I remember of reopening boarding was for two passengers from a delayed inbound flight. We later calculated that they had covered slightly over 1km from gate to gate in less than 5 minutes. 😎

I’ve only missed my flight once and, funny enough, it was with and because of Delta Airlines. I was supposed to fly from NY (I think it was JFK) to Madrid with a direct flight. The night before my flight, I received an email from Delta informing me of a gate change. So I went to the security control in the terminal where that gate was. Only to find out that the actual gate was the “original” one and it was in another terminal! I run like I had never run before! But I also had to take a shuttle to get there! On that bus I found out I was not the only one to have received that infamous email!
Of course, when I got to the gate it was already closed and my luggage was there waiting for me!
I think that the flight was overbooked and so Delta decided to play this little “trick”. Needless to say I’ve never flown with Delta again.

They reallocate your seat to a standby passenger and the standby passenger is someone they know so they do it prematurely and then hurry up and close the gate to ensure that person doesnt get pulled cause if they do then the gate agent gets in trouble for dong that.

Also people may not understand how annoying late passengers is to the operation. Ik sometimes it’s out of your control.
For example say passengers arrive late when bin doors are already closed & what not & that passenger has gate check bags, ramp crews have to reposition equipment & open back the doors.
Usually if the boarding gate is locked but plane is still open u more than likely will get through. Unless u piss off the gate agent or something.
If the aircraft is closed then u definitely need some luck. Opening back the door is not like opening the door of your car. Procedures are triggered & everything is sent back to base.

Had that with Emirates on a delayed flight out of london with 40 connecting passengers. Got to the gate whilst rushing through only for them to switch to flight closed. The jet bridge didn't get disconnected until 35 minutes later, with the staff saying "oh, that flight was empty too!" Cue 40 pissed off passengers having to be redeployed onto a packed flight 12 hours later to Jakarta. I've made tighter connections at SIN with SQ. The lack of coherent communcation within EK is a reason why i don't fly with them, given that there's no connection times greater than 90 minutes. Not impressed, given that we asked the purser if there was any chance of us getting ushered by ground staff at Dubai, noting that half the passengers were elderly. T2 Dubai is massive. Admittedly, the flight was delayed because we needed to get deiced. Also, we were one of the last flights out before the Christmas week and before LHR started experiencing heavy delayes due to snow. I get there's procedural compliance etc, but the tactfulness and disrespect shown by the smarmy gate agent was a bit cuntish.

This is exactly what allowed me to board a flight even though it was ‘closed’. I was connecting from a Qantas to QantasLink flight in Brisbane and my arriving aircraft was late. I ran to the gate but it was closed and there was no gate agent (but the plane was still there). I found a Qantas customer service agent who started booking me into a hotel (it was the final flight to my destination that day) but on speaking to the QantasLink team, they realised my suitcase had been loaded … so they decided it was easier to get me onboard than to try and find my luggage in the hold. So I ran back to the gate and they let me on. 😅

    • @gunnern1

A common "rule" I've noticed if the passenger has bags is that if the ramp crew locates the bag(s) before the passenger shows up, the crew "wins" and the passenger is left behind.
For container loaded aircraft, this is sometimes adjusted to when they pull the container with the bag out of the hold. And yes, assuming no human error, we know which container to look through... 😉
This is obviously not always the case, but at least it was not uncommon when I worked at the gate.
