Even in the books, the gold mines are running out, not Casterly Rock but several bannermans mines are running less gold.

I was already wondering how the Westerlands could have so many soldiers, when they are neither a big land, nor have they that much fertile soil. The country is filles with hills and mountains. Not as much as Vale of Arryn but more than the Riverlands or the North. So where do all the people come from?

@@O.G.H. It's not suprising. Westerlands are quite big, and they have good climate there, unlike in the North. Take into account, we don't know if Westerlands are able to marshall more troops than Riverlands. What we know is that Wersterland's troops were grouped into 2, and then 1 big army (plus new army crushed at Oxcross), when Riverlands forces were widely spread due to the fact that war was taking place on their soil, so they needed to garrison several castles. Also, Riverlander's took severe casualties at the very beginning of the war, since Golden Tooth to Wispering Wood, which makes us readers never see those troops, when Robb arrives. Lastly, huge amount of Riverlanders were murdered at the Red Wedding.

I wonder if GRRM sat down and worked out each area in Westeros and Essos individually, one at a time, building the myth of each on its own and then tying them in together one at a time. All of these frigging houses for EVERY area and a rich history for each house. Tolkien would have been proud!

When Robb married Jeyne the Spicers were roped into lawfully, they had no loyalty to Robb. Greywind proves this with his constant distrust of them.
So Tywin gifting them the ruins of Castamere is a message, dont make the lannisters question their loyalty again.

Ah, the Westerlands. Prosperous, beautiful and reasonably hospitable. Judging by the sheer might and glory of Casterly Rock, and the history of House Lannister's reign over the West, they should be the royal house of Westeros, and the Rock, not King's Landing the capital. George Martin has said himself that the Lannisters kept the West safe and full of plenty and peace even in the most turbulent times of Westeros. And it is the Westerlands who put Westeros on the map in the known world with the "golden city" of Lannisport and the Rock known and admired as far as Asshai. Yes they've had some truly awful representatives as all houses have, but all in all they far outdo the supposed grandeur of the dragon kings who contributed nothing but a cesspool of corruption, poverty and power-grabbing for a capital, a squat, ugly looking fortification on Dragonstone, depressive. And the worst civil wars in history, Maegor's wars, the Dance of Dragons, Blackfyre rebellions, Robert's Rebellion, for which the Mad King was responsible. I just wish the show had done better by the Westerlands and certainly the Rock.
And I'm not at all biased just because I'd certainly be a Lanniser myself with my blonde hair and green eyes. Hear me Roar!

Nonsense, joffrey is in the highest position of power, giving mercy will earn him love and respect, and the opposite would earn him only hate. tywin was in a time when his house was ridiculed and laughed at, mercy would have been a sign of weakness, he also needed to make an example and build a reputation.

@@O.G.H. this is completely unrelated to my answer, can you read English? Tywin didn't have mercy because he deemed it less beneficial than ruthlessness, joffrey wasn't ruthless, he was just mad and enjoyed people's suffering. Tywin killed countless innocents, and so did Robert baratheon and eddard stark and the thousands of men they led, armies always went on rampages during wars and the smallfolk suffered, the sack of Kingslanding would have happened to any other city if it was on the end of a medieval army and it's the result of a heavy lack of discipline not the commander's orders, elia and her children's fate was a political move to be in the good graces of robert baratheon, the new king who hated anyone related to the targaryens, it also proved that he wasn't supporting the targaryens despite having been hand of the king for a long time, and it did work since robert agreed to take his daughter as a wife and queen. Tywin was a pragmatic man and ruthlessness brought him so much, What would he have gained from mercy?

Also, Jayne Westerling's mother was a Spicer, which would explain her proficiency with anti fertility potions she fed to Jayne - if she's descendant from Maggi the Frog. Another interesting tidbit about the Crakehalls is that Jaime Lannister squired for Lord Crakehall and protecting his master knight was part of the heroics that got him knighted - he protected Lord Crakehall from the Smiling Knight until Arthur Dayne arrived to take over.

Some major Westerland houses were left out this. House Marbrand, Swyft, Banefort, Payne, Brax etc... Cmon these are too important to go without mention.
