So this week we are reunited with my Lola and I will be putting my tagalog / ilocano knowledge to the test and see if I can have a full conversation in one of those Filipino languages. My grandma, who grew up in Ilocos Sur, taught me and Ian some words and phrases in a video, and while Ian couldn't make it, we had to see what I could do. Let us know what you want coming up! I think a good gay lingo to substitute "slayy kween" (because direct translation doesn't work) is "Pak! Ganon!" which directly translates to "Pak *slapping sound effect*! Like that!". If you want that to be more street and more slang: "Pak! Ganern!"

Your relationship with your lola is so precious. I lost my lola almost two years ago and I miss her everyday. We used to say Sunday was her day because she would always bring so many dishes like adobo, pancit, chopsuey, bistek, and all our other favorites.

It's funny what your Grandmother said about mixing her Tagalog with English. It reminds of an Argentinian lady with whom I used to work. She had lived in America for many years, and when she talked on the phone with her husband it was a mixture of Spanish, English, and Yiddish! It always cracked me up to hear her. Also, it's wonderful to be spoiled by a Grandmother's love. There's nothing else like it.
lol my parents are Eritrean but I was born and raised in Germany, so when I talk to them I always mix Tigrinya (the language there) & German bc I can't speak it fluently

This is not only educational but very entertaining as well. One can see the many the levels of Filipino culture if one keen to see how the Lola-apo emotional relationship developed as soon as the grandmother held him as a baby. Quite understandable as to why Filipino/a actors/ actresses of the second generation should watch this as their first immersive experience.
