I broke down several years ago. Waited 2hrs, I was on a main road near a bend. My van never broke down before and was regularly serviced. An orange van rolled up. This human mountain appeared dressed as an RAC engineer with an attitude. I explained that the van just cut out as I pulled out of a junction. The engineer leaned in the van, turned ignition on, turned engine over and said its out of diesel. I said there is half a tank on the gauge, I filled up last week and not been very far. He said the gauges are not accurate and he has sone in his van that I would have to pay for. WTFk, what a complete arsehole. I refused the overpriced diesel offer and asked him to tow my van about 3 miles up the road to a local garage that I use. Then when the guy had shaken off my van and waiting to go he thrust a electronic note pad under my nose and said I have to complete the questionaire or he cannot clear his job. He leaned over me while I was impelled to tick all the 'satisfied' boxes. Glad when he went. And the reason my van died that day was the fuel pump had packed up. It took the guy in the garage 10 minutes to get bonnet up fiddle about and come up with a reason. Never trust RAC again.
I have ultimate cover with the RAC... I was recovered in Scotland 7/6/21... truck turned up (not RAC a 3rd party garage) I was then left to sleep in my car on an industrial estate in Ullapool ( I have onward travel inc hotels) No hotel offered and not even a phone call from them to even see if I'd been recovered or was even alive. The next day they insisted that I go to Inverness Airport to pick up a hire car so I could get home, and said that my car would be relayed back TO the Midlands to be repaired.... So taxi to Inverness and a hire car for 7 days..... Then today they are telling me that they won't relay my car I have to pay for it ( yet I have unlimited relay on my policy.... So I am 500 miles away from Ullapool... They chose to hire me a car but now they won't relay my car unless I pay for it.... 6 hours on hold in 3 days... RAC are absolutely terrible. I'm going back to the AA.
Damn! I know exactly how you feel. Looks like you were treated worse than me. I did manage to get my money back from joining and I think you should do the same. AA every time for me now.
RAC were happy to leave me and my wife and two young daughter 10 miles outside Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands overnight in sub zero temps in winter. We first contacted them with the breakdown at about 4pm. If it wasn't for a local mechanic we would have been in real trouble. They are abysmal
Years back I broke down on the M6 near Carlisle so I rang the RAC as I had breakdown recovery from my insurance company so I thought great no problem they will fix car or take me home. A 3rd party tow company turned up didn't look at car. Put on the back of a breakdown truck and took me to a garage 15 miles away. It's now 1am and left me. This garage was in a motorway service area. When it opened they got the car going. Leaking fuel filter so they bodged it to get me home. I was OK with that. About a week later I get a £100 fine from a car park company. The RAC had left me in a one hour parking area. Got in touch with them about compensation. Waste of time. So they turned up (it was a 3rd party firm) didn't even look at the car when they seen the fuel on the road took me to a closed garage and left me stranded as for a hotel they said it was to late at night. Well I wouldn't need one during the day would I. I've never Been a member since. With the Internet and smart phones you can find a tow company anywhere you are now and they will know local garages better than someone in a call center in Birmingham. The RAC & AA who are just as bad are now not needed. In the 1950s they employed mechanics who fixed cars. They are both far to big now and have to many members and they don't employ mechanics. Run out of fuel. Dead battery OK they can do that but a leaking fuel filter which was fixed with a jubilee clip as it was cracked no chance.
Just found this while searching for similar before I upload a similar tale to my channel that happened recently. They are still a waste of time 3 years on...i was left for 8 hours in the middle of nowhere in an open top car open to the elements...no care whatsoever shown ...still didn't turn up by 1.00 am had to get home another way with help of my family (120 miles home)...got £50 compensation.....currently looking for a recovery service that can provide an actual service. Their small vans that come out and repair small faults are ok...and like you say the drivers are very helpful...its the actual recovery bit using a flatbed that they are hopeless at.
It's crazy how they are still so bad. I have had good service from the AA and will stick with them from now on. The RAC call centre staff just don't care and let down a good team of service staff who actually seem to care.
@@TimWoodVlog Hi Tim yes check out my story once its uploaded will be late on tonight if you like (not as bad as yours but bad enough) Am wondering if AA though is as bad...as i say in my tale my neighbour waited hours for them as well....then the driver dropped him at the 1st services because his allowed driving hours was up...another flatbed had to come and load him to continue the journey home lol. Am currently researching who to go with (some wont take the car...its a Grinnall Scorpion 3 wheel kit car) "Start" gets good reviews and fellow scorpion owners have had good from Adrian Flux
The RAC are absolutely shocking. My van broke down and I got home in hire car. Not seen my van since. RAC don’t know where it is either. Their ‘logistics’ dept is the total abyss. Extremely rude staff. Day 11 since broke down and no idea when it’s coming back. Never ever again.
Tim. Had a similar issue yesterday. Completely stranded with kids. The call centre is a complete joke. They do not have any sympathy with clients calling in. Paid £350 to get us and car back. Waited 12 hours. Stranded. In the end I called AA who got me directly through to their 'intervention' team. Who offered a taxi and a hotel. I ordered them to get me a taxi home. Which they did but made it sound like they were doing me a favour! Taxi driver told me how many fails they are making. They have systematic company problems. I'm going to send a letter to their board to help them sort this out
The RAC let me down on numerous occasions ! Last year after waiting 3 hours rac mechanic just past me watching the sky and reported than I'm not there !!! After calling them again and started a little argument .The mechanic arrived after another 30 minutes saying than there is no way he can help me with anything !!! And Yesterday my brake line cracked so I call them asking for recovery . Guess what happened ?? NOTHING !!! Instead of recovery truck van arrived and I have been told plenty of impossible -negative answers and excuses and threatening me with bills I will have to pay for my recovery ! So the car stayed where he is and I walked four miles home like an Idiot !
i`m a disabled man with various medical conditions and like yourself my car was making a noise , i pulled off the main road and pulled on to a road that wasnt so busy , this was 8pm on sat night , i tried to phone but kept getting the link through the phone to deal with on line , fortunatly i am able to use my phone to carry on with the call out , i too have full breakdown cover home start relay+ ect car hire , you get the idea , well i was waiting 16 and half hours untill i was picked up by a taxi and then another 2 and half hour drive through traffic jams home my car arrived home tues afternoon . the apologies where plenty but my rump and back where just glad to be on a bed , i`d had no food i had half small bottle of water and 3 pieces of gum , after complaining and receiving a written apoplogy i got an offer of £80 compensation , 19hrs of sheer incompetance and i get offered £80 please tell me what you would have said , i am taking legal advice , a billion pound company like the RAC and cant get a recovery truck to the customers , its false advertising for a start , they dont do what it says on the tin
A few years ago I had a bad experience, as I had a fault on the tow bar ( detachable) an when the so called RAC mechanic had finished with it, it was in a cracked an worst state than what it was after he had finished his repair, and said I wouldn’t trust this, having said that the company is only as good as the mechanic they send, an if he doesn’t know what he’s doing DONT let him near otherwise it’s gonna cost you.
Was looking to change to the RAC from the AA as just received my renewal quote ,quite expensive and the same level of cover from the RAC is cheaper but having heard your story I'm not going to bother now , in the years I've been with the AA I've never been treated like this so thanks to you I'm staying with them .
Phone the AA and tell them you wanted to renew but its too expensive, they do listen. I locked in a cheaper rate for 2 years. No matter how cheap the RAC are its not worth being left out in the cold
RAC was good 10 years ago but now it is a joke, technician would turn up in a few hours but do not expect he will do any repair , advice you would need a tow truck but than it would take another 10 hours at least (Rac now use a lot of 3 rd party garage) with RAC good luck , you would need it, expect 12 to 20 hours waiting time for a tow truck.😢 Cow boys
I never would have believed this - until it happened to me 2 days ago. Utter, utter failure of a once great organisation. I was left in the cold for 10 hours, fobbed off and ignored. Now my car is abandoned in a lay by and possibly vandalized, still broken down. I'm at home 100 miles ago (daughter came 100 miles to fetch me ) and I will have to pay £450 to have it recovered. They are finished. It's only the fact that modern cars are very reliable and so most people never have to experience their uselessness that keeps them going. AA for me now.
That's terrible to hear. I really hope you recover your car ok. I have had to use the AA after leaving the RAC and the service was perfect! I hope you get your membership refunded.
Yeah this happened to me a2 months ago , but my stranded time was 8 hrs , in the end I phoned a mate who came within 15 min, hooked me up and got my van started , an hour later, I received a message from Rac saying a mechanic was assigned to my vehicle and he will get in touch with me , after about an hour I received a call from that mechanic saying he would be with me in 90 min, by the time that mechanic had got to me 31/2 later I was already at home and in bed , RAC in my mind stands for R eally A wful C rap
An RAC recovery man tried to sell me a new battery for £155. He said if it breaks down with the same problem the call out will cost me £85. By chance i found a lamp that i think was shorting to the car and i new that the van doors was open which could have drained the battery to, but my instincts was telling me that this mechanic was pulling a scam with his data from his computer. I have to get rid of the van due to Ulez so I didn't want to buy a new battery. I said thank you but no and i will risk getting home and now my battery is now fully charged and hold charge after a week. I do believe the mechanic new what he was pulling one over on me and its a shame because trust is what you think of in the RAC and once lost to the thought of them as snake salesmen trust is lost for good, I do wonder how big this behaviour it is in the RAC.?
I had the same with a battery, cost me a lot more than it should. Not the first time I have been left forgotten about either. No issues ever with the AA, will be sticking with them for sure.
Hi Tim, I've always been with the AA and worst wait I've ever had was about 4 hours wait as they sent the pickup truck to the wrong road. Only problem in many years though and from my experience their service is on a whole other level to the RAC by the sound of it.
Tim bro!!! I am gobsmacked man, I feel your pain mate. I could see your frustration and how upset you are just from this video!! Don't give up complaining man, go all the way to the top till your satisfied with a resolution mate. I have only ever been with the AA and can comment that they are the best of the best from my experience. Yes the AA are most likely the dearest brakedown/recovery firm out there, but there is a reason for it. How can the RAC think that this kind of service is acceptable for its paying customers??? Such a shame really because this firm was once a very respected brand and company many years ago, but now has become just a money robbing bunch of cowboys with NO intentions of providing a professional service in return! 16 hours..They should be ashamed of themselves. If it took 8 employees to successfully recover you, this just underlines how little (if any) professional training the staff have been given. Stupid people should learn that the easiest/best business is repeat business, sounds like they won't have any soon lol. I'm also currently going through a similar time with Hertz. Another bunch of un-professional clowns that don't know what customer service is. I strongly advise people to stay well clear of this mickey mouse outfit if you know whats good for you. Be warned, and google there customer reviews if you don't believe me. Take car Tim, I will catch up with you soon pal. 👍
I've had to use the AA a few times (sometimes as a passenger in another person's car) and perfectly happy with them. Hugely suspicious they couldn't be othered to get us because they were watching the game. Hope you get some compensation from RAC, sounds terrible. Maybe try twitter, as sometimes a company reacts quickly if they think negative press is spreading on social media? I must get to another ride-out, saw on Happy Cow app someone saying Marees is closing! Hopefully mistaken rumour?
Haha they were watching the game for sure! Will swich to the AA soon I think. We are running a group ride on Nov 23rd, feel free to join us, it's listed in the Carve group. Haven't been to Marees in a while will have to go check with the guys there.
RAC breakdown call centre staff are shocking i was told that it's up to the customer to keep their car in good roadworthy condition, my reply was well i wasn't hitting my starter motor with a hammer everyday in hope it would eventually pack in so what exactly is your point madam 😠.
Because I didn't get an RAC patrol, they called out a local garage as I was in the middle of nowhere. Not sure if he was supposed to arrange it but he asked me to call them.

Did the RAC ever come back to you? Both times I've called the AA they were there quickly, and their phone APP is pretty good.
I got a refund for my membership and joined the AA :)
The patrol man puts the recovery details through, why did you say you had to call RAC to arrange the recovery?
Because I didn't get an RAC patrol, they called out a local garage as I was in the middle of nowhere. Not sure if he was supposed to arrange it but he asked me to call them.
what happened to them? they're a really poor performer now...
you can take them to disputes .... you can follow a legal process.. then refer them. They'll be ordered to deal with the situation... your situation is most certainly a candidate.. for sure.
