  • We all suffer from the odd breakout, but do you know what causes them? We have teamed up with science author Steve Mould to get the lowdown.
So why do we get spots? We asked Steve Mould a presenter, author and all-round science genius to help us understand the facts behind those pesky breakouts. Because the more we know, the better we can figure out how to battle those blemishes.
    WHAT CAUSES BLEMISHES?
Spots are caused by a build up of bacteria in your pores, called p acnes, Blocked pores can be caused by everything from pollution to over-cleansing. Your immune system tries to fight the bacteria by sending blood to the affected area which looks like redness and swelling. You get an annoying zit!
WHY IS TEA TREE OIL GOOD FOR BLEMISHES?
Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties, basically, it helps neutralise bacteria. This helps your immune system fight back against blemishes. Our Tea Tree skincare harnesses the antibacterial power of tea tree leaves, so you can put together a regime for visibly clearer looking skin.
    NEED MORE HELP?

CAC Aloe Vera herb is well known for its medicinal properties and has multiple benefits in case of skin problems. The gel is made up of pure extract of aloe vera that has a mixture of rose petals in it. The gel has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties and also provides a coolant effect to the skin.

Steve Mould best Mould! There seem to be some questions in the effectiveness of tea tree oil. Wikipedia cites an analysis from 2009: "despite years of use, available clinical evidence does not support the effectiveness of tea tree oil for treating skin problems and infections in humans.". That seems... rough. Is there compelling evidence for the opposite?

Sources seem to show that it is effective at killing the mentioned bacteria (in addition to most microbes) and tea tree oil may be effective against acne, but I couldn't find a more modern review looking at anything that's happened in the past 12 years of research and couldn't be bothered to go through the well over 1000 papers on pubmed on tea tree oil that have come out in that time. It's also worth mentioning that the source that quote comes from is about the effectiveness of complimentary and alternative cancer therapies, and every other use of that source in the Wikipedia article is to say that tea tree oil is toxic when ingested.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1360273/ there's a big ol' review of all the studies from the 80s-2006 here if you want to have a look. Theres also a review from 2000 of the clinical trials done with tea tree oil here www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/10800248/

But how can I prevent that sebum build up? I wash my face and scrub, but my face is basically in a permanent oily state.

    • @zenub2012
      @zenub2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

stand in front of a hair dryer... it will dry out all the sebum.... then apply Sellotape to your face.... it will protect it from dirt

The body tries to maintain a balance, so (possibly counter intuitively ) the harder you scrub with harsh soap the harder it will fight back. Try using the most gentle cleaning routine twice a day for a month and see if you can work **with** your skin to find a calmer equilibrium.

@Jackson Percy - When I was in my early and mid 20s, I tried everything under the sun to deal with my oily skin. In my late 20s I was introduced to Dr. Bronner's Peppermint, and it's been a life changer! I've tried a few other Dr Bronner scents and they didn't work nearly as well for me.
On hot days, I still get oily, but *_nothing_* else that I've tried has ever been as nearly as effective at removing that oily buildup.
It is important to note that Dr. Bronner's Peppermint is really strong, so you will want to keep it away from your eyes and *cough* other sensitive areas.
Once every month or so, I find it doesn't seem to leave my hair quite clean. So then I'll do a second wash with generic shampoo, which always leaves a nasty residue, so then I'll do a third wash with Dr. Bronner's peppermint.
Other than that odd-ball event every month or so with my hair, just one quick wash with Dr. Bronners peppermint is perfect!
Hope it helps you as much as it's helped me!

I use a facial cleanser called Phisoderm which claims to restore the PH balance of skin so you dont produce as much oil. I have really oily skin and its the best product I've found in my 20 years for acne reduction

According to Ayurveda, any disturbance in the Tridosha (vata, pitta, & kapha) results in the disease formation. Out of three, Pitta Dosha is responsible for maintaining the digestive system, and when there is any disturbance in the fire or Agni, it will lead to several symptoms. Bhrajak Pitta, sub-type of Pitta Dosha helps in maintaining the health of skin, and hence when it gets aggravated, many skin problems are arising leading to swelling, redness, pigmentation, scar formation, the formation of pustules, etc.
