A very, very sad moment :-( I came over from Germany to take photographs of what remained of the British mining and steel industry several times. In 2003 and 2006 I spent entire nights in front of the gate of Monckton's Coking Plant. It was a fascinating and beautiful place. One of the managers passed by and spontaneously invited me to a tour around the plant. What a great experience! Wonderful industrial architecture, a fascinating process and the kindest people who were extremely helpful and took pride in their work. What a shame that this is all gone, and I wonder if all the honest working people had some kind of "future" after the closure of the works.
Stelco closed, here, in 2007-2008. About 600 jobs went up in smoke. Lake Erie has 90% of the lost produtction. Another 3,000 got "retired" out of Dofasco. Both coke facilities are at 5%, and some unknown un-official Quantity. The official reports say the Coke Plant was "idled" in 2015, but there are people working.
Terrible sad to see a coke plant being shutdown. I work at Clairton Coke in Pennsylvania USA. It's the 2nd biggest active coke plant in the world, we got 13-15 battery 19-20 battery B battery and C battery. We had 1-3 Battery but it was recently shutdown due to age. Not sure if USS is gonna build a new one or not but while it's really hot working there I say it's worth it. We make really good money and majority of my co workers are really cool and fun people to work with
Blimey, just come across this now. I used to run in and out of here doing plant maintenance. Would do Maltby as well, Hargreaves were running the show then. What happened to the old unimog when Monckton closed?.
I was contracting there for the last day. Very emotional for all involved l, especially those who had long service lengths. Was privileged to be there and film this for memories
Maybe the Brits should stop buying refined steel? Can't run a Coke mill without running a blast-furnace, can't run the blast-furnace if there are no customers for the steel. Every industry has a boom-bust cycle.
Why are people applauding and laughing? The place is being shut down and I presume a lot of jobs lost. Very sad. I worked at Allied Chemicals coke plant in Ashland, KY for a while; a much bigger operation than this. All gone now.

Less air pollution
Actually just means it’s made in China now where there are less pollution controls.
@@joshb124 China's using their resources to get the job done and make money. We might learn something from them.
