- Jimmy Page talks about Led Zep IV, Headley Grange, Recording The Tracks, Track Listing, The Mandolin, Sandy Denny and Acoustic Guitar.
Interviewed By: Liz Barnes
I never get tired of listening to JP talk about Led Zeppelin
Neither does he.
I just can't figure out why he hasn't recorded and released any new material since the Coverdale / Page Project. Unless I'm missing something beyond the endless ( and almost un-necessary...) Led Zep reissues.
This isn't John Paul....lol
@@1970borntorun His skills have deteriorated over the years and he's still stuck in the Led Zep days. He can't let go like Plant did decades ago.
@@nickv4073 very true...
Does anyone else realize that Jimmy has an astounding memory ? He can recall dates from decades ago, the day of the week, what he was doing THAT day ……. and so on. That was, is and will always be part of Jimmys’ edge. Like Marilou Henner. SUPER MEMORY !! Lucky, incredibly great Guitarist !! My personal favorite. I couldn’t envy as well as admire ANYONE more than Jimmy, other than war heroes and people who save other peoples lives. I love his music so dam much …….. ALL OF IT !! And it’s a LOT more than LED ZEPPELIN even though Zep is TOPS !! LOVE YOU JIMMY PAGE, Since I was born 1963
Without a doubt, Jimmy Page with his talent and genius on the guitar and Producer of the best music will continue to conquer generations. I loved the interview, thank you . The magical Led Zeppelin IV masterpiece.😍😍
I remember hearing Led Zep 1 for the first time, about 54 years ago. It was on a small record player in the gym in high school. Life changing. Good Times/Bad Times...... I rushed out to buy the album and have never looked back. I was 13 at the time, and remember it like it was yesterday.
Oh yeah.. we must be of the same age.. but my buddy played for me on a cassette recorder - Babe, im Gonna.. I said, wtf ?? so THIS is Led Zep ??? Little did I know then, I was just 12, you see ? Didnt take long..
Me too! Was over at my friends house and he said hey...ya' gotta hear THIS. We went in his older brothers bedroom as he had one of those cheap record players that folded up and speakers attached to it. He put on Led Zep album and that was it for me...I was hooked! Those were great times as FM stations were just cranking up playing album sides all night. The great stereo wars were commencing! I seen LZ 2 times live. Had tickets for 3 later shows but JP was too wasted to play...canceled...Plant was in car wreck with broken leg, canceled and the Bonzo died....
Jimmy Page is my favorite guitar player ever ... Zep my favorite band ... I just wish he would of been out the last 12 years or so touring or doing more live ... So much time has passed he will 80. Jimmy always my #1 Zep #1
Brilliant exchange. Jimmy Page is so well spoken and candid.
Yeah, but a bet there’s at least one thing he doesn’t want to be candid about🤔
When you listen to Jimmy Page talk about the 4th album, the first and most obvious thing you notice is how proud he is of it, even after 50+ years. As he should be. Led Zeppelin IV is the very definition of what a landmark record is. It's the exact opposite of listening to Robert Plant, who speaks of it in an almost dismissive way.
That's not good!!!!!
It's called being modest
I think it runs deeper than that! Plant has expressed ambivalence over Led Zep many times over the years. He was the one who has put the kibosh on a reunion tour, he refused to do Stairway for about 17 years(he just did a version)@@rapson672
No, Plant wasn’t the biggest fan of Stairway to Heaven., that’s it. He loved the song Kashmir better as do I. 😊….. Physical Graffiti… the 6th album
okay thanks@@lindamoore6163
I love Jimmy and all of his emotional, sloppiness that he puts into his playing. It's totally awesome.. There's so much beauty when you play from pure emotion while your high as a kite!
Love hearing Jimmy talk about Led Zeppelin , how he had ideas and tried things , amazing producer, and not a bad guitarist either .
💜you Jimmy! I wish I could have seen Led Zeppelin live…
Regrettably, I never saw Zeppelin in concert back in the day. However, I was fortunate enough to see Jimmy performing with the Black Crows during the summer of 2000. They played together so well that there were times when the collaboration sounded just like Zeppelin. And it was more than an honor to see Jimmy playing the double neck, projected on huge screens each side of the stage. But what a great interview this is. It’s always a treat to listen to Jimmy carry on so intelligently, especially in regards to IV, their ultimate masterpiece.
I could listen to Jimmy Page .All day long. The passion all his life. He has had for the love of what he does. Im thankful that he has shared it with us. And how how he has remained so kind and humble. Jimmy you are a complete Joy. I love this brilliant man.
I love Jimmy. He is brilliant!
praise the devil
Not only is JP a great guitar player and composer, he also has a good recollection of things and the way he articulates it is so captivating.
If you haven't read Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page, you should check it out.
@@amt5911 yes Ive seen that book. Been meaning to grab it. Cheers.
Jimmy page has always been my favorite guitar 🎸 player. 😁
Battle of Evermore has always been one of my favorite songs from Led Zeppelin
Great interview. Four Sticks my favorite track on IV. Blows me away every listen to this day
It’s solid, underrated for sure….stairway gets trashed by some but the extended guitar lead in that is phenomenal, the song needs to be played loud!
Yes! Four Sticks is very underrated and it's absolutely brilliant. My fave on this record and in my top 5 overall. I was happy to see your comment!
Jimmy really ascended to that wise old wizard status
Many thanks for this …was always n still am a Zep fan. Heard them live in Vancouver Canada in 1975! 👏👏👏
My introduction to Zep was the fourth album. It was mystical and magical and life changing to my 9 year old self. I wasn't sure what it was or what I was hearing but I'd never heard anything like it and it moved me in a way no music had yet. Black Dog the echoes on Roberts voice and that riff. The Battle of Evermore with mandolin an acoustic and those voices Sandie and Robert were brilliant. Stairway's rings of smoke through the trees and the piper leading to reason and just the whole story. Then to "packing my bags for the Misty mountain" where the spirits go now, wow the sound of the music, the subject matter they sang about, the light and shade of emotion inside the music. The groove of Four Sticks the thunder of the Levee. No writing or pictures or explanation of anything. A fold out Album with the night scene of the hermit with a lantern atop the mountain. Four symbols on the album with the name Led Zeppelin. It was like finding a book of occult knowledge or something. I wasn't sure at that point who or what Led Zeppelin was but I knew I'd never be the same again ☮️
Same age for me and the 1st album; had no clue who The Yardbirds were, though; I was strictly a Beatles kid...
@@Jah_Rastafari_ORIG I too was a Beatles kid so much so when they broke up it messed me up bad.
I felt like both my parents were murdered or something it was awful. A very bright light in my life went out in a hard way. I was so deeply saddened.
It was truly my first experience with loss that affected me in a life changing way.
You know what’s amazing,I haven’t heard anything like it since
@@fredfreddy2338 back then I couldn't have expressed those thoughts or feelings like that but I'm a 61 year old man looking back and now able to properly express what was happening. I was reflecting back on something that profoundly affected me when I was young and just sharing those feelings and wasn't expecting to be questioned or analysed for it
@@fredfreddy2338 you know dude, if you don't have something worth while to say to someone, you should probably keep it to yourself!
Jimmy Page, the man, the legend.
I was in my moms 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and Q95 in Indy played Led Zepplin 1/2 in its entirety…. They were called the album station…. And I will never forget how I felt and how bad I wanted to play the guitar from that first listen…. I am 55 and it never gets old… and hearing him speak so lucid and clear shows his brilliance and part that made Zeppelin incredible to this very day….
Physical Graffiti was their best album.
Agreed. Most diverse and a excellent listen.
Definitely not…I’ll take Houses,3, or 4
Physical graffiti is by far their weakest album, made so much worse by the bloated length.
@@JoshRockolla well, I don’t think it’s the best but it’s definitely not the weakest that title has to go to in through the out door
l was introduced to Led Zeppelin by a new crew member on a Shell Oil Tanker Ship in 69. He had a tape recorder with LZ1...He was a Galleyboy then...l was in contact with him fifty years later...he retired a Chief Steward ....he remember those days of our youth in 69...

Great interview Liz. You really got Jimmy to open up there. Fascinating to hear how those records were made.
Great interview, nice and down to earth asking sensible questions.
I've been a zep fan for decades,of course the latest wade vid very well done sir!!!
I've met and hung out with many fellow guitar players and celebrities, but Jimmy Page is #1 on my forever bucket list.
One hour over a couple of pints is all I'd need.
My wife has a mandolin that was given her by someone. When I met her I had never played one so naturally what did I try to play when I picked it up??!! I can see how he picked that song out on it not knowing anything about the instrument. It's basically pretty easy. Amazing.
He knew how to play it, it's strung the opposite of a bass...
Thank you!

Big fan . Saw Zeppelin 3x times 75&77 msgnyc Great Band 👍 Page is Great ! Good Interview best to all ..
Amazing interview
The real impressive thing here is his ventriloquism…the best I’ve ever seen.
Just listened to some Zeppelin earlier today. I remember buying their boxed set back in the 90s for a high school report (pre-internet!), the boxed set came with a biography of sorts that I /may/ have heavily borrowed from in my school report. 🙂
Fast-forward to today, and it is amazing how many of Page's solos instantly come back to me, and I found myself humming along to all of his solos. He wasn't just fast, he wasn't just technical...plenty of players meet those credentials. Jimmy Page virtually SINGS through his guitar....similar to John Bonham singing through his drums (Dave Grohl has this too.) It's a rare quality and difficult to fully explain but you know it when you hear it. It's as though their instrument becomes their voice. BB King could be included in this, as well as SRV. Prince was in that same group as well. They are an elite group of musicians where the heart and the mind travel instantly into the hands and out comes God.
For me, this was the high water mark for Led Zeppelin. Everything about this album is extraordinary, but Bonham's drum sound in particular absolutely shines. Much of what came after sounded a little anemic in comparison...
Agreed. I remember an interview in a guitar magazine in the 80's how Page thought that records from the 60's drums sounded "...like cardboard boxes." He and Glynn Johns changed that with Zeppelin I.
Bonham's best drum sounds were I, II, and IV.
Miking and room sounds.
Magnificent.
The 80's Hair Head bands kept trying to reproduce it.
They had the technology and mics by then.
My friend's studio has a drum kit at the bottom of an old house with a winding staircase. The mics are placed accordingly.
Close and distant miking in a proper mix do it.
Room reverb is better than pro-tools.
But once it's in, you can't take it out.
It's a fantastic album. Battle of evermore is one of my all time favourite Zeppelin tracks. Rock and Roll was always better live than it is on the album, in my opinion.
Good interviewer...well done

Battle of Evermore is my personal favourite.
Really? Even with the bad fantasy fiction lyrics?
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc yes 100%
@@Gcssdvnkloiutesc”Bad fantasy lyrics” describes half one Zeppelin’s discography. If that’s a real issue for someone, they probably don’t like Zeppelin lol
I like the lyric’s because I’ve read the lord of the rings and the hobbit. The lyrics remind me of the books
It is,and I hate the term,Magical
That I totally get. But still would be nice to see them together one more time.
Led Zeppelin had the formula down. Simple songs centered around iconic riffs.
It was the record of the decade in my opinion. Don’t know where Page gets his genious but there is NO denying it. Interesting that Plant is dismissive of it????
- the Legendary Jimmy Page as one D.J. was so introducing back in July 1985
The fourth album that the band recorded did not have a Roman numeral or a title for that fact. It was an untitled album which led to most people calling it “Led Zeppelin IV” ,”Four Symbols” or “The Runes Album.”It was also a perfect blend of what the band was going through during the first three albums…” It’s been a long time, been a long time, been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time!!!”…Karl Schumaker 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Another title for the album was “Zoso”…This is the spring time of my loving…a second season I’m to know!!!”…Karl Schumaker 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
Jimmy doesn’t seem to have a problem calling it four
oh oh ou oh and another was The Man With the Sticks on his back? snap out of it!!! Jimmy just called it 4, IV? , wierdos!!!
Both of you need a reality check.Bottom line:the album never ever had a title to begin with…”Where’s that confounded bridge???”…Karl Schumaker 🎼🇬🇧🎼🇬🇧🎼🇬🇧
Whenever I see IV in a record shop or used book store on lp I buy it. I own four copies.
Brilliant
After ZEPPELIN bands got faster and harder but never better Long Live Mr.Page it'll be a sad day when he is no longer with us
He sure was a huge influence on my guitar playing. Loved his acoustic playing in particular.
Yeah, been following JP since The Yardbirds..."Im a Man.".
Great questions. I got some new info :$

Stupid then and even worse now. Rolling Stone continues to be hopelessly stupid to this day. 🤑🤮
Nor were they kind to Nirvana, Van Halen, or The Rolling Stones. It was always a joke to take them seriously.

Rolling Stone sucks, always has. Those long unreadable articles written by elitist narcissists, who are faceless to me, & probably everyone, I tried too pretentious . Don’t miss them on the newsstands worthless
@@lisasaims3007 you must really hate intelligence and eloquence. Stick to television I guess.
When asked about being one of the best guitarists in the world, Page said he wasn’t even the best guitarist in Led Zeppelin.

M´kay.. they didnt have to live in that damp Headley house together, to record their best album, the LZ One.. did they ? They ran out of steam after their first one, and each one after that had more and more fills, not worth mentioning
I didn't know Page was Japanese.
Why is Jimmy staring at me?
JP stole Randy California’s song for Stairway
No he didn't.
The court said no. The case is dismissed forever.
It's convenient he never talks about the songs he ripped off from other artists
Those other artists are thieves as well.
old buzzard
Question: Why does Jimmy Page only do interviews with the BBC? Exactly like the late Jeff Beck, Brian May, and Eric Clapton, (who's now been "cancelled" for expressing his opinion of Covid Vaccines). Three reasons: 1. He has an agent who is massively behind the times, and, still thinks the BBC is the only "respectable" journalistic resource. 2. Jimmy himself is old-school, doesn't watch TH-cam, and believes this to be the case also. 3. Probable personal relationships with BBC staff and agents going back many years. And license-fee payers money … changing hands. The BBC has of course, conclusively shown itself to be as reliable as a chocolate teabag in the last 10 years. They are so uninterested , most of interesting the stuff probably ends up in the laptop trash-can of some overpaid editor.
Jeez, This is NOT Jimmy Page, from the fake picture, on the front, to the fake voice, & small FAKE Zepp clips, its absoutely not Jimmy,The whole thing is FAKE, FAKE, FAKE.
Page is a slightly sloppy guitarist. He was the first to do that type of rock and similarly to Clapton he gets the accolades but the following guitarists were far better players.
Stare way to underage groupies in pentatonic minor.
Every band in the '60's and '70's had underage groupies. It Is just how it was back then.
@@dhala54Wrong. Many bands refused to associate with underage groupies. Or like most healthy straight males, are interested in women of their own age. The Beatles never slept with their underage fans. But zeppelin did and they also wrote about it, put it on their cover of houses to holy, they were disgusting. To be fair Robert plant was 19 years old and nearly a child himself. I mainly put the blame on page who was a pervert.
@@dhala54does not mean it's right
@@whisperingthunder9832 I never said it was right. These young women literally threw themselves at bands back then. The musicians were young men also, high from anything they could get their hands on. It happened.
The Bible has the "People of God." taking little female children as war brides, and also want us to believe a holy man was drunk, so we're to accept the excuse that he didn't know he was mating with his daughters. Yeah, that happened… he "didn't know." 😂
Jimmy should be ashamed of himself for stealing all those songs and never paying royalties to the rightful owners of the songs. Led used to be my #1 band until I found out the truth about them.
You have no clue what you're talking about, it's embarrassing.
Why are bands like Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin rehearsing in Alister Crowley's house ffs. What is going on in this world.
Jimmy lives there it's his home😎
@@mikesquires334 He sold it a long time ago
I've got his books mate, so don't be tagging me with being ignorant. The guy talks about sacrificing a baby and invoking all sorts of evil shit. This guy was a satanist
@Daathiel We understand that he was the evillest man in the world. Here are some quotes: "For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male child of perfect innocence and high intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable victim" with a footnote: "[author] made this particular sacrifice on an average about 150 times a year between 1912 and 1928"; "But the bloody sacrifice, though more dangerous, is more efficacious. And for nearly all purposes, human sacrifice is the best".
So... a murderer as well. But usually labeled by the fellow satanists as a sci-fi writer and an "intellectual", who was simply deadpan joking about masturbation. Class Dismissed
@@mikesquires334 you and @kevinborland2090 seem to be confused. Headly Grange is a former workhouse in hanpshire which Led Zep used to record several times and has never been owned by Jimmy Page and has nothing to do with Alistair Crowley.
