Thank you for sharing humbly about the "failed" bread; you could have cut it but instead you walked us through your thought process in making something else and not wasting it. I learn as much if not more from failures and I love that you are vulnerable with us. I really appreciate your ministry to us, Robin!
Just sharing my latest frugal grocery "hack". I am meal planning and putting half of whatever I make in the freezer and once a month we have a leftovers week where I don't cook! This brings our grocery budget down on the no cook leftover week to about half of what we usually spend! Thank you Robin for your wonderful videos! God bless you!
Robin, I enjoyed this Depression-era video very much. We as a nation need to be cooking from scratch more. I know I enjoy cooking from scratch! Please do some more of these Deoression-era recipes. They are so basic, yet they all look delicious!
I remember my dad would fry bacon for breakfast and then fry eggs in the bacon grease. It gave the eggs such a great flavor. Mom always had a jar of saved bacon grease just in case we didn't have bacon on a given morning. Great memory.
I make an orange salad where you thinly slice red onion and the oranges. Place them on individual plates and drizzle with good quality olive oil and salt and pepper. It is really good. Thanks for the great recipes today. I love to see some of your creations.
Nowadays, eggs and bacon, even butter are no longer frugal if you have to buy them from the grocery store! Still like your recipes. Love the idea of cooking the beans in the instant pot instead of soaking.
Canned mackerel is a very economical fish and it makes a great chowder. We also like mackerel cakes and when I make those I save the brine in the freezer for the next time I make chowder. 🐟
We grew up on chipped beef on toast but my mom would go out to the garden to pick some peas. The sweetness of the peas really compliments the saltiness of the beef. Plus they add some color!
My grandpa LOVED chipped beef over toast, but from his army days called it sh_t on a shingle. Always said it with a straight face while us kids giggled over the bad word. Funny memories.
Hi Robin! Seeing Austin always makes me smile. Loved your recipes. In my immediate area, I'm lucky to have two warehouse stores; Cosco and BJ's. BJ's is closer to my house, their yearly fees are less and they accept manufacturers coupons as well as provide booklets of their own coupons. Thanks for sharing your life with us. -Pat
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your recipes. I really enjoy them. I am subscribed but don’t seem to get your videos on a regular basis so I’m thrilled when I find a recent one.
You should try hot water cornbread. You may already know about it being from the south (she’s from NC too). About as budget friendly as it gets. No eggs. Most of the recipes don’t call for it but my mom used some milk in hers. She also added a slice of stale bread. All amounts are approximate because I had to right them down as I made it with her - 1 cup cornmeal, 1 slice stale bread, 1 tsp salt, very hot water, milk. Combine cornmeal and crumbled bread. Add very hot water until just wet. Add milk until consistency of very thick cake batter. Heat oil (she used Crisco) in pan until cornbread mixture sizzles. Drop moisture by spoonfuls in hot oil. Cook until brown on one side and then turn. Drain on paper towel covered plate.
My husband and I cooked on our woodstove in Iron skillets today we made biscuits, fried potatoes and bacon and made extra for his.lunchbucket this week.
Robin, your use of a pomegranate reminds me of my childhood. When I was in grade school (60 years ago!), we were able to leave the premises at lunch time. There was a produce store about a block away from school, where I could walk and purchase a pomegranate for five or ten cents, and slurp the delicious juice on my way back to school. That was such a treat. Hard to believe (well, not really) that they cost three dollars now! ~ Have a great week!
Hi Robin! Love all the recipes! I learn something new every time I watch your videos. Have a wonderful week and I look forward to sharing some time with you next Sunday!!
Just made the granola bars. They are cooling now and the house smells great. I added chopped dates and pecans. Can't wait to try them. All the recipes looked good and use things I usually have on hand. Thanks for sharing.
I just bought a pomegranate fir my granddaughter to try. It was so good. We used to eat chipped beef over mashed potatoes on toast. Haven’t had that in years. I’ll have to add it to my grocery list. Thanks for the yummy recipes.
Hi Robin! I had to come back and report that I made the yummy granola bars! Even with the price of eggs, I really like that this recipe has that extra protein. I added dates, pepitas, and a sprinkle of sea salt to the top. As for the pomegranate - I think I may have missed the boat - my 2 grocery stores didn't have any☹ but I'll keep checking! The seeding process just looks so fun! Might have to put it on my to-do list for later in the year - I read that pomegranates have a short season. I love learning new things - thank you again! Hope you're having a great week!
I am so excited to see how to seed a pomegranate! We have a Mediterranean restaurant nearby that serves a black bean, cucumber and pomegranate salad that is delicious. I've wanted to recreate it but the pom scared me away from it! Thank you! I love the way you packaged the granola bars! Baker's twine makes me happy 😊
I always love your videos and learn a lot from you. You’re so wise to share a video like this during a time when all of us are seeing such drastic price increases at the grocery store
I soak dried beef in cold water for a half hour to remove some of the salt, drain well and sauté in a tablespoon of butter. I then add a can of Cream of Mushroom soup and half a can of milk to the beef and heat through. No need to thicken, and the soup adds a lot of flavor to the dish. My husband also adds diced fresh mushrooms to the recipe to add more “umami” when he cooks this for breakfast.
That sounds great Sherry! Unfortunately, we can't do the Cream of Mushroom soup because it isn't gluten free, but I like the addition of the mushrooms! 👍🍄💛
Hi there In from Kentucky and the way you made cornbread is how we've made it for generations. We flip the cornbread on a plate crispy side up its so good. Sometimes for supper we would have it crumbled up in a glass of milk. Love from Missouri
I just made the ham soup.. substituting sausage for the ham.. I also added a can of diced tomatoes that was nearing it "suggested" use by date and celery.. it looks delicious! Thank-you so much for your help in these matters..
My dad used to make us creamed chipped beef (dried beef gravy) all fancy like over biscuits. It's still one of my all time faves. When I make it if I have heavy cream or half and half in the fridge, I add a dollup for some extra richness. I tested a recipe for America's Test Kitchen last year for a rice krispie bar that is so good and packed with protein (and no marshmallows!) and have made it repeatedly. I cut them and wrap them for snacks when I need protein. I had wrapped them in brown parchment paper and tied with twine very similar to your granola bars because thar was what I had on hand. I feel totally on point now.
I was thinking that too. Even when I make French toast, I always add cinnamon to my egg and milk. Love cinnamon. I mix it with my oatmeal, and also sprinkle it onto my coffee grounds before I brew a pot.
Hi Robin - I’m having to squeeze you in at halftime today. Ha ha I love football. These recipes were so nostalgic for me. We always had buttermilk cornbread with pinto beans or with navy beans. We had them pretty regularly growing up. I prefer that type of cornbread to the sweet cornbread. I love pomegranates in different kind of salads and I get the seeds out the same way you did. I have to say that some of your subscribers left some sweet comments for me last week. I always forget that other people are reading these comments, I always think I’m just talking to you personally. Anyway I did appreciate the things they said. Thanks for this great video. Love in Christ. Back to football.
Hi Donna! Thanks for taking time to watch during halftime! We usually have the games on too around here. 😄🏈 I also saw some of the sweet replies to your comment last week. Don't we have the most amazing community of subscribers?! Enjoy the game and God bless!💛😊💛
My family still loves creamed chipped beef. It's also good with peas added and hard-boiled eggs (good way to stretch out a meal if you need to). The orange salad looks delicious!
I was shocked to see commercial bacon grease in a grocery store yesterday. My mom always kept a jar of it from frying bacon and it’s very common up here in Michigan.
I appreciate you sharing the "fails" along with the wins so we can relate. My husband and I love creamed dried beef and have it about once a month. I can't have gluten so I use corn starch to thicken ... I add 3 T. of corn starch to 2 and 1/2 cups milk and stir until it dissolves and then add that to the skillet and stir over the heat until it thickens, then add the dried beef, S & P to taste. I like mine over a gluten free toasted English Muffin and my husband eats his over toast. I remember making this with my Mom when I was young and she always let me sprinkle in the beef. Memories ... Take care Robin.
Dear Robin Enjoyed your video this week after watching you make the different dishes Hands down for me would be the bean soup, I love anything with soup beans in them. I love dipping cornbread into mine. I have never eaten chipped beef before but it looked easy to make so I am going to give it a try. Please make more videos like these, the food is simple and less expensive than others. With grocery prices going up all the time it’s good to no there are ways to cook good food without breaking a budget. Oh and the citrus salad looked delicious as well. See you next Sunday Have a blessed week. ☃️❤️
Yum! That soup and the granola bars look so good. Great ideas. It’s soup weather here on the east coast so I’m definitely going to put that in the rotation. Thanks, Robin!
Thank you for sharing all this great recipes I learn so much from your videos , I don’t see the recipe for cranial bars , will you please let me know if you have a link for it .
If anyone is curious and wants a replacement for eggs in baked goods since the price is so high-- you can make a "flax egg" for 1 to 1 substitution... 1 table spoon of ground (aka meal) flax and 3 tablespoons of water and set for at least 5 minutes will yield 1 egg. $3.48 for 16 oz (32 tablespoons) of ground flax at my local Walmart. 🥧🥚
Chipped beef is new to me here in England! ' Bread and butter pudding ' is a traditional frugal dish here using stale or leftover bread., Slices of bread are buttered , layered with a sprinkling of dried fruit then an egg mix like yours is poured over. So very tasty .
Hi Robin! As always another great video. You really are a very good cook and also a brilliant homemaker. Thank you 🙏 so much for all your teachings. God Bless you and your family 🇦🇺🦘❤️🙏🍀🥰
Robin, another great and resourceful video. I especially love your cooking videos. They are simple, economical and very diverse. I loved the Austin cameo while you were slicing the oranges.
That oven is sparkling!! 🎉 Thanks for the soothing video and great ideas. p.s. Here’s an idea for working with oats….mix your nut butter, syrup and eggs BEFORE adding the dry ingredients. Makes it a bit easier to distribute 😊
I was thinking that if you heated up the peanut butter -- maybe microwave/mix the p-but and maple syrup together first -- that it would be easier. Those bars look yummy!
I now make my own bread as I can’t have anything with soybean oil in it, and every loaf of bread I checked at the grocer’s contains that as one of the top ingredients! I use a bread machine to make my yeast bread. Using the exact same recipe, on the same day, I have had one loaf that rose so much it had a huge muffin top on it, one that was only about 4 inches tall, and one that just barely came to the top edge of the bucket! I make 3-4 loaves when I’m making bread. I haven’t tried my sourdough loaves in it yet.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Just sat down to finish up my meal planning for the week. Love how you made those granola bars and packaged them so cute!! ❤️
I loved loved this Robin. Please do more. I'm gonna make granola bars tomorrow, also the beans and ham. I make cornbread several times a week. This was great!
Thank you Ivonne! You can find them in my Amazon Store or use this link: amzn.to/3iYHudY I really like them - especially for my non stick cookware! 👍😊💛
I love the jug you are mixing in? My friends in the US say eggs are so expensive and hard to come by? We are not finding it too bad here. Thanks for the inspo!🍳🍞🥖🫓
Hi Robin! What a wonderful idea! Thank you for taking the time to do the research to look for recipes from the Great Depression era! Everything you showed us interests me, so I will keep those recipes and try them out. I don’t have a cast-iron skillet, though. I will find a way to use something similar to cook the cornbread. In these more difficult times, it’s good to have budget friendly recipes like those you showed us today, and it inspires me to find ways to be more frugal. Thank you again, Robin! God bless you! 🌹💖🙏
Thank you for sharing humbly about the "failed" bread; you could have cut it but instead you walked us through your thought process in making something else and not wasting it. So true Debbie! 😬 I hope you are enjoying a blessed day! 💛😊💛
I purchased powdered egg replacer. But cannot find a replacement for bacon and at $7.99 per pound I don’t buy it.
Mom always reserved her bacon grease for cooking. She also added 1/2 cup or more petite frozen peas to her creamed dried beef for dinner.
Congrats Robin on reaching 100,000 subscribers, delighted for you 💐
Thank you so much Mary and God bless!💛😊💛

These recipes are great! The chipped beef is one of my faves. I don’t make it a ton, but my husband and i enjoy it every few months. So good 😊
For unused bread you could also soak it in tea and spices and egg and make irish tea bread or bread pudding by soaking it in milk and adding spices.
Haven't thought of chipped beef on toast in years! Made my mouth water!
Love these recipes 😋❤️
Great recipes! I plan on trying many of them! I love your channel and never miss a show. You are so inspirational!
Thank you Jane! I appreciate your encouragement and support so much! God bless! 💛😊💛
My grandpa LOVED chipped beef over toast, but from his army days called it sh_t on a shingle. Always said it with a straight face while us kids giggled over the bad word. Funny memories.
So funny Joanna ! My dad was in the army - so that’s what he calls it too!
😂🤣
Yes, so did my Dad. Chipped beef on toast had a different name in the Army...lol
Yes...my Dad was in the army and still liked it now! S on a shingle! Hehe!
Like the soup recipes. I don’t have an instantpot so appreciate recipes that can be adopted to the stovetop.

Robin my daughter is in the Navy and they still make this chipped beef! This was a staple in the Military!
Hi Judith! My dad was in the Army and remembers having it - it had a different name though. 😂💛
We always add honey and butter spread onto our non sweetened cornbread (much like your non sweet cornbread recipe).

I love the jug you are mixing in? My friends in the US say eggs are so expensive and hard to come by? We are not finding it too bad here. Thanks for the inspo!🍳🍞🥖🫓
Where's "here"?
Egg prices are high right now due to shortages (bird flu outbreaks), but I think it will get better soon. 🙏😊💛
Hi Robin. Preparing a great pan of cornbread is a skill. Good cornbread is "worth it's weight in gold". Thanks for another enjoyable video.

Thank you Monique! I hope you enjoy these and that they help! 💛😊💛
I can't wait to try the bread pudding and granola 😋❤️
I hope you enjoy them both April! 💛😊💛
