    Most other videos I've watched failed to mention what makes a legal break and a legal shot. So this is a great video. The only thing I would add is that you have to put opposite balls in the base of the racking triangle, as others pointed out. Thanks!

  • @kyl3davis
    @kyl3davis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    when racking, the two bottom corners have to be opposite (stripe on one, solid on the other). the two balls below the 8 ball have to be opposite (solid/stripe). no balls can be consecutive along the outer edge (you cannot have 3 solids in a row or 3 stripes in a row).

    • @awolf913

      Actually according to the BCA and WPA rules which most would consider as the world’s most standardised rules, they say the only requirement is that the 8 ball is in the middle and one stripe and one solid is present on the corners. Every other ball is random.

    0:55 you can also lag to decide for break
    1:25 not entirely true. The requirement for 4 balls to hit a rail must be met only if a ball isn’t pocketed on a break. As long as a ball is potted on the break, it doesn’t matter how many balls hit a rail.
    1:43 you can also rerack and allow the original breaker to break again
    1:49 pocketing a ball that is not yours is only a foul if you contact that ball being an opponents ball first. Hitting your ball first which then touches an opponents ball that is potted is not a foul, it’s just the end of your turn
    2:34 this is incorrect as it’s the break shot the cue ball is only limited to ball in hand behind the head string. Any other foul immediately after a foul break is where you can have ball in hand anywhere on the table.

    In Nigeria there's no ball in hand, it's just two shots on any foul your opponents commit. And also if they scratch (pocketing the cue ball), the opponents will take the ball and place it in the breaking section and play.

      interesting, we play a ball in hand kinda thing but the cue ball can only be placed anywhere behind that line ( i don't know what the line is called) and if your balls are behind that line, then you have to do a rebound, it's much more difficult but more fun to play. Also the 8 ball cannot be pocketed into the middle pockets, that makes it too easy.

    Are there any situations in which a player gets two shots? For example, is the opposing team scratches the cue ball, would the other team get two shots? Solid video, liked it, all in all cool video that gives many insides.
    Great animation style
    For beginners like me: PLEASE IGNORE EVERYTHING BELOW as you can not take anything i've said here for granted (or may be you can, depending on answers given by pro's [hopefully])!
    but i've one issue ,one question and some remarks with it :
    I'm trying to learn 8 ball with my family right now and have been reading many rules and watching many videos lately, so please correct me where I might be wrong.
    Issue:
    ~ 3:17 "potted the solid [..] now you only target solid balls...." in the example the 8 is also marked... that ball is not allowed for playing directly, even by the solid playing player, unless it is the last ball
    Question:
    ~ 0:50 Who goes first, isn't that done by "Stringing" instead of a coin ?
    Remarks:
    ~ 0:30 Building/Racking the break: If i'm not totally wrong the break is build random, only rule given is the position of the EIGHT [All rules] (AND that the left and right corner balls are diffrent type ( spot and stripe) [BCA])
    most players put the 1 in the front but it is not needed by rules. Video shows solid balls in all three corners (APA ruleset of '23 does not even mention the two type in corner rule)
    ~ 3:03 "... but you potted both a stripe and as solid... " but the balls shown in example and marked being solid [2(Blue) 6(Green)]

    I love the comment on this one is Awesomely am 62 and all the comments crack me up.For anyone not sure how to play, your friend should show you or that person isn't a friend.In regards to racking the balls, if your good enough your pot a few balls.His shown you the tricks just follow and you might get a few in and when the game.If you have trouble playing with your kids then get them to play fair and teach you.Okay people, in Australia or what ever rules you wish to follow, you break and the a if the white comes off the table their is no fouls as long as a ball hasn't drop, then the game continues, if the ball drops, then the oppenate can say I will take that ball and no single shot is needed.If all on the black,first mistake wins, that is hit the black and go in off then they lose,black goes in and white off the table, then they lose.All depends what country you live in.State rules before you start, then no argument.

      Also depends on the ruleset you play,
      i've started lately and decided to stick to the DBU rules (Deutsche Billard Union [more or less the German billard authority]) which are basicly a translation of the WBA rules
      §3.8 Losing the game:
      (1 a): if the player does a foul while potting the 8 successfully ( if you foul by not potting the 8 at all, it just ends your turn!)
      Actually potting _accidentally_ a ball of your opponent is not a foul (according to wpa), if you did not foul by hitting it. ( rules of first contact and so on might apply) (potting a opponents ball, even by applying any other rules correctly, on pupose might be considered unsportsmanlike conduct according to 6.17 but is unlikely as you do not gain an advantage.)
      So coming back to your question ... By all rules known by me so far ...
      potting the 8 in the right pocket and potting a opponents ball at the same time does NOT result in losing the game...
      if the cue ball fouls ( by also be potted or leaving the table for example) you lose

If both a solid and a stripe go in, the table is still open, but you get to go again. can I shot cue ball without touching my hand on table?

      According to the rules, yes, but it's practically impossible considering it's really hard to do without resting it on your hand or using a bridge stick.

      It's rare, but in that case, you just re-rack and start again.

      According to the official rules no. You can either respot the 8 ball and accept the table in position or rebreak.

      Foul and left off the table. Cue ball in hand to opponent.

      @@awolf913 so if i hit for example ball number 6 and it went out. It'll be out and its foul for my opponent and ball number 6 will be inside right?

    • @awolf913
      @awolf913 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@X7Villa7X in your example, ball number 6 would be off the table and the opponent would have he option of accepting the table as it is or taking cue ball in hand to place anywhere on the table. This is providing this didn’t happen on the break shot, in which case, the cue ball would be in hand behind the headstring only for the shot immediately after the break following a foul which in this case would be.

    What if you fail to pocket 8? Will you lose or continue?

    • @HPayne62
      @HPayne62 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You keep going until someone does- unless there's a scratch on the 8, and then whoever made that shot loses.

    I gave this a thumbs down.
    The dialogue was too fast.
    The graphics were very good, but moved by too quickly.
    The music was unnecessary and distracting.
    I would not use this video to share with friends.

    Jesus christ, like half the rules need you to get a ball to hit the side. Why? What's so special about the cushions?

    • @catclark9488
      @catclark9488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different places have slightly different rules. At the pub I used to play at, it's not a foul if the coloured ball doesn't hit a cushion when you have your shot.
