    Captain, please do not ever trust those ramps, they will fold up and the car will fall on you. I was changing the oil in a car, pulled the drain plug climbed out from under the car and as I walked to the front of the car the ramps folded and the car came crashing down. Ten seconds earlier and I would have been crushed. Always reinforce with jack stands. Stay safe buddy!

    • @quickturn66

    Should have checked the inside of the muffler for chunks that could plug or restrict it. Catalytic converter theft is commonplace due to the value of platinum. In an area that doesn't have constant emissions testing, it's worse. It's easier for even a shop to get away with it.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Had a cat fail once and restrict the exhaust flow to the point I couldn’t get over 25mph. Had a different car flag low catalyst which also leads me to think that the catalyst leaves the car. Then I saw a video from a guy that likes to recover scrap metal. As an experiment he got permission to vacuum a section of the highway in California at night where it’s normally a rolling parking lot during the day. He vacuumed then repeated a few months later. After processing the dirt he recovered he said he made a huge profit from the catalyst elements he refined out even after the street sweeper rental. Was sadly disappointed that they wouldn’t agree for him to do more cleanups. Wishing you and your family the best.

  • @paulchapin4472
    @paulchapin4472 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Yes, cats do destroy themselves internally from age and heat. The extra welding probably didn't help. The innerds of the front cat is likely what took out the rear cat. These hot shards of material eventually exit the tailpipe. This is what commonly starts roadside fires. I've seen many times where multiple fires are started as the car travels on a freeway from hot cat converter debris hitting the dry brush.

  • @thomasdesmond2248
    @thomasdesmond2248 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Captain the reason that intake keeps clogging up. Is because of the blow by getting recycled back into the intake. That catch can will help with that problem. The blow by also caused the failure of that catalytic converter. That clogged and blew out into the rear cat. Run some caty clean through the system every 10 to 15 thousand miles. This will make the cats hold up much longer. This is done by removing the upper O2 sensor and pouring the caty clean in the hole. Then let it set for an hour. God bless

    Mike, after working on GM cars and trucks in a dealership for over 30 years, catalytic convertor elements do, in fact, disintegrate. The bolt left out could have caused extra vibration, and the welding wasn't good for it, possibly causing the problem. You may or may not have neededthe o2 sensors. The difference in oxygen before and after the catalyst is what the sensors measure to know if the cat is working. If there is no catalyst in it to make the change, it will cause the check engine light to come on. Good luck. Love your videos.

My ocd noticed the oxidized headlights on the family truckster. There are diy ways of doing it, but I am a fan of popping off for the 3m kit for cleaning up the headlights. Could not believe the difference that made. Been over a year and they have not really gotten bad again, either, which is what a lot of people tell you to expect. Oh yes he did ….that stiff conversation you described with the owner is a big sign. He conceded to do “something” that he really didn’t want to and decided to go “full on passive aggressive”. It’s a thing with people that HAVE to comply. That’s why I never force someone cooking (or serving) my food as if they must knuckle under ….or else. There’s a movie out there about a chocolate pie that an uppity woman ate (and loved btw) where her housekeeper used a certain “special sauce” after getting pissed off.

    I remember going up the highway following a friend in his truck.
    All of a sudden I'm being pelted by debris coming out of his tailpipe.
    Yup, the cat failed catastrophically leaving an empty shell.

    Your videos are extremely entertaining for anyone and I’m a older young guy who watches a lot of video on TH-cam. Thanks, what I don’t get is 4000 views and only 1200 likes. Most of these people must not understand how this system works. This is as good as free entertaining gets. Thanks Captain.

    Nice work there, Captain. I admire your patience with that project. My wife had a Terrain with the 2.4 Ecotec and while the car was nice, I just hated everything about that engine. Good car, horrible engine, and I wasn’t sad to see that engine leave our family fleet.

    Hey Cap. The exhaust leak is the reason the cat core is MT. The added o2 will slowly burn off the core like charcoal. OEM or aftermarket. But cowboy is right.

I'm really like that you keep things real! I believe that we should strive to learn something new everyday if not then we wasted that day. And you don't seem to be wasting any days!! Great job Mike

    Had a car that finally would not pass smog, replace the cat with an aftermarket cat recommended by the state of California. The old cat was still passing smog with one small piece left inside. However when it was completely empty and blown out the tailpipe is when it finally would not pass smog testing anymore.

    14:09 If you want to reduce cracking on exhaust manifolds, you will check the mating faces with a straight edge and when you find that, even on brand new manifolds, them uneven, you will surface (grind/sand/mill) them entire face to a single plane before install.

    Exhaust work is always brutal. I just laugh when someone says lm just going to unbolt that old muffler that been on the vehicle for 8 years and expect it to just slide out of the exhaust pipes and they will have no problem. 😂😂

    Cats can have a black market value of anything between £40 / £400 depending on what model and contents of palladium and rhodium. Here in the UK its been Known for gangs to cut them off parked cars in broad daylight.

    When underneath a vehicle safety glasses are your friend. You'll never have more than two eyes. It's always a good habit to wear safety glasses doing any kind of repairs. Also a cardboard box is a good cushion when you have to be on the ground. I always save the big boxes to be cut for a cushion.

    The first cat burns itself out. Clogging the seccond cat. Increasing the temperature within. Melting and burning it out as well. The ceramic will contain and use a lot of heat. But everything burns if hot enough and long enough.

  • @donaldales7739
    @donaldales7739 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes the cat is gutted. After years of heating up, the firebrick breaks up and restricting the flow. I've done it myself on several of my over 10 year vehicles. Slightly louder but improved performance and mpg...

    After the 2 second manifold I would be hunting down or making a set of stainless steel tube manifolds for that engine. There seems to be a lot of movement in the heat cycles and a cast part is not going to like that no matter how you "beef up" and redesign it.

  • @mrheart4242

    You need to restore the beam from those headlight lenses by polishing the front of the glass with some toothpaste and finishing them off with some polymer sealant.
    Keep up the good work sir 👍
