    +ScubaTony Anschutz - we found Luckyfish in the Wharram Builders and Friends website and bought her pretty much on the spot. We were already convinced about the design and had been looking hard. The builder, Dan, was selling. She had taken 3 years to build and was 18 months since launch, with 1500 coastal Sth Africa miles under her. He and wife fell pregnant with their first kiddie... conceived during some of those miles :-) and realised that they would not have the free time to maintain the boat.

      OH man! You got the super bargain on that one mate! You were ready to buy at just the right time. I hope mine comes out half as nice as Luckyfish!

    So nice to get the back story. I look forward to all of your videos. Luckyfish suits you two perfectly! Its an amazing boat and the builders love for it shines through. It is very understated in its graceful beauty.

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Understated - agreed and graceful too. The Wharrams do seem to harmonise with the sea, you sense it when you sail on one.

      Luckyfish Gets Away I am not sure what I want this stage of the game. I attended the Hui in Fort Myers and really enjoyed seeing some Wharrams and speaking with the owners and builders. So for me in limbo not retired and not having a proper tow vehicle. Take care and have a good summer.

      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great you got to the Hui! - We were there last year and miss those guys. Would have liked to have seen Greg and Barb's Tiki 38 after the big reno - pics look good. That was a bit of a bargain that one - ideal for someone who enjoys the work bringing one back. Those sort of projects to come on the market occasionally.

      Being a South African it was most probably some 'Home affairs' bureaucrat that wanted a 'Back-pocket handout and I also had a giggle at the Simonstown naval ship docked there... what's the bet it was there for at least a year coz the 'New South Africans' can't even maintain them let alone sail them! Our Submarines are a disaster and been in dry dock for ages!!

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robert Rudolph too true. reminds me to include some of the outstanding braai footage in next vids. shame the new democracy wasn't really ready. thats a story that gets played out everywhere too - so much human suffering and loss as a result of countries going through "growing pains". Same story in many of the new commonwealth independencies post the UN resolution in the 70's. not a lick of paint on a building since then nor a pot-hole filled. many locals look back on the "good old days" of being governed. learned the same in SA. Interesting but not oft discussed. Cheers.

  • @blackhat4968
    @blackhat4968 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved the back story video. :)
    But one of the video clips brought up a question. [9:47] (Looking under the deck from the bow while running the outboards.) It appeared that the "coffins" that the outboard motors are housed in were dragging quite deep in the water underway. (it looked like up to a foot?) I would never have thought that they went that deep and instead that just the end of the motor went into the water when it was tilted down.
    But on thinking about it, you would want to be sure that the prop was well under water, so that waves would not uncover the prop in the troughs. How deep below the water line does the prop normally operate?

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I noticed that clip too, when we edited. The engine sleds, are easily adjusted for height by setting the length of a fixed strop. The manual pulley system that lowers them (cam cleat) is relaxed when they rest on the strop. In that clip the strops had likely stretched and not been shortened a few inches. However, number of other points. The engines (=heavy bits) are located amidships which is where heavy things should go. But when it comes to propellors, they are often best located at the back end to keep them submerged. So, you are right - we do have to be mindful of how deep we set the props to avoid cavitation in the troughs. It is only a very occasional issue and actually of little consequence, but really good question.

    • @MiQBohlin
      @MiQBohlin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      About the lower gear unit on starboard engine - How is it? Did you have to replace any bearings? Or was it just an issue of adjustment?

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MiQ Bohlin thanks for the thought mate. We have forwards... just as you left it. And, since that is the direction we are going :-) we will not strip the lower unit until Rio Dulce. Its likely the corrosion issue Clarke mentioned... there is a leaky seal in that unit.

    Kinda lost in the timeline again, I know this video is way back, but I thought you had said something about the sisters being the first Mongolians to cross an ocean or something like that? But I've been watching since SA and I had the impression that was before this, since you only crossed the Atlantic relatively recently.

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Josef - you are right on all counts. Our apologies for any confusion. This one was recorded a few months before the Atlantic Crossing in 2016. We have since been in Florida and presently in Caribbean. We'd like to catch up the timeline but also need to top up the cruising kitty and share the pre-Atlantic preparation - which this vid and the next two, do. let us know any other q's! Cheers, Stew and Zaya

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckyfish Gets Away
      Right, I know where this one fits in, but when did they set some kind of record? Where in the timeline was that?

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah! They crossed the Atlantic Ocean when they landed in Barbados in 2016

    • @Josef_R
      @Josef_R 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that's even more confusing. I just watched you cross to Barbados a few months ago, is that video from 2016? Or was that a different crossing?

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, yes! We have only crossed one time and that was it... hope that now makes sense. We have 2017 season to catch up on and the current season too. (The hydro-generator, boat tour and the live videos are from 2017 - once we arrived in Caribbean) but we have not edited the passages and great folks we met across Carib / Florida yet... they will be published as soon as time and money permit... hope that explains it, if not, do ask! Stew

    Aren't "bureaucratic" and "bungle" synonyms?
    ..yes,.. more adventures, from any time period, please! Thanks! :)
    I've rather gotten into central asian music, by the way, with an accent on the Bashkir (Bashkoristan Russian-controlled-Republic) area. I'm an "old relative" of the Bashkirs (y-dna paternal line R1b) converging back about 7000 years ago. A bit distant, but I'll take it, as we're all relatives on this nifty planet,.. and it's quite nice to find a "legit" excuse to claim some brothers and sisters in that neck of the woods.

    • @SailingLuckyfish

      cant help you with the proa problem - how do the Marshallese do it?

    • @alapikomamalolonui6424
      @alapikomamalolonui6424 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK,.. after thinking about it for a while (dealing with tuning the weather/lee helm so that the boat "goes straight" without having to be "babied"), Iʻm chucking the "swinging/raking" mast, and will "simply" make my leeboard "very" adjustable fore and aft.
      Since water is much denser than air, less "movement" is needed to shift the underwater oriented CLR (center lateral resistance) than the sail oriented CE (center effort), and since my lee side is essentially a plane (itʻs flat) I can just put my "up and down" adjustable leeboard on a fore-and-aft slide to tune the weather/lee helm.
      Eliminates a CRAP load of mast jointing and standing rigging complexity! Hoorah! I also need to be able to fold the mast down quick like, and the "swinging" mast makes that a nightmare.
      ..blah blah blah,.. gettinʻ some wood to make the 1/12 (maybe 1/16) scale model, ʻcuz I need to TOUCH a model of the thing to figure out how to shape the "stitch and glue" planking for the hull(s).
      Nā mahalo and aloha to you guys! :) 🤙

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense to me. Wharram experimented with fore and aft daggerboards on the Pahi's. To adjust the CLR so you are on the right track. Any Pahi owners here want to comment?

    Great video. Lovely to see some of the sights where I grew up sailing. Liked the tactic for the trip to Saldanha but would have given Bellows Rock a wider berth if it were me going round. It's a lethal break that's claimed more than it's fair share because in a heavy scend you don't realise from just how far off the rock the swells can pick you up, and before you know it you're in bits. Wouldn't complain too much as an outsider about the SA government. That's nothing compared to the utter disaster of being a citizen under them. It's not the future Nelson Mandela spent all of those years in prison for, bet he's spinning in his grave at just how his ideals have been betrayed by his own people. Great video, used to love it in False Bay and Saldanha.

    I still find it frustrating and puzzling that this planet has SOO MANY obstacles to living and traveling, and just breathing, ie, Zaya credentials. Just Dumb. But, I suppose if we want to travel we have to tolerate and fund the political nonsense of each country whim. Thanks for another Fine video of your explorations.

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have learned that many/most governments have no interest in helping people move freely across their borders. They provide little funding and no common sense to freedoms of this kind. For some reason, it is not seen as being in any nations interest. Not just Sth Africa, but many many others including Barbados who were shockers too. Cost us heaps. And thats before we get started on Customs duties!!! i.e. exchange of goods across borders. If its a government, its called duty, if it were you or me it would be regarded as organised crime and extortion. Still, don't sweat what we cant change eh?

    • @samualwhittemore228
      @samualwhittemore228 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David D Yep, we will never escape the long slimy tenticles of the multi-armed all-devouring beast known as Government --- until there is a sea change in political philosophy to that of individual Freedom. That ideology must be paramount and all other issues secondary.

    • @stevemazz3121
      @stevemazz3121 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe what you are experiencing is the sad fact that so many want something for nothing and Countries don't want free loaders coming across their borders. You deal with customs official to confirm you have funding to take care of yourself and will not become a burden to the people of the country you visit. THE USA has finally learned they don't have enough pockets to fill all people seeking a hand out.

    • @SailingLuckyfish
      @SailingLuckyfish  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. As sailors though, our ability to support ourselves rests on the boat we arrive and leave on - the officials don't even seek proof of income or means as some air-travellers from certain countries are forced to provide. All we needed in our case in SA and Barbados was to be able to talk to an independent and reasonably minded official prepared to look outside a sledgehammer rule that caused alot of unnecessary stress.

      Something else I have noticed by watching Sailing Uma is that Dan has fewer issues with his Canadian passport than Kika has with her Haitian. Has the Lucky Fish crew run into that particular prejudice?
