  • Looking for a used Polo in South Africa? We have over 3500 to choose from!
    www.cars.co.za/usedcars/Volks...
    The Polo GTI now leads a lonely life in a segment that was once buzzing with compact hot hatches. The Fiesta ST and Renault Clio RS are no longer sold in the South African market and so buyers who want GTI vibes but can't stretch to the R700,000 needed for a Golf GTI are left with limited options.
    Volkswagen recently facelifted the entire Polo range and the updates are quite significant. We sent our in-house race ace Ashley Oldfield to tear the new Polo apart (metaphorically speaking of course) and tell us if this latest incarnation of the Polo GTI is Vrrr Pha or Vrrr Meh.

    In 2016 I paid R290K for a brand new Fiesta ST... Now you can't even get a base spec polo for that anymore. Half a bar for a bland arse Polo GTi is lunacy. It has just become a fashion statement.
    It's a crying shame that we don't get the new Fiesta ST here anymore...
    FYI low milage Fiesta ST200s are currently around R330K & in my option it's a far better car for those who want a dynamic driving machine & don't care much for all the tech frills.
    You can get basically get a tidy regular Fiesta ST with under 80 000km for almost half the price of a new Polo GTi...

      I have a 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport which I bought for 290K. While you can't compare it with the Fiesta ST and Polo GTI it is a great car. Absolutely superb around the mountain passes here in the Cape. Yeah straight line speed and 0-100km/h times ain't everything. Give me the Swift Sport or Fiesta ST over a Polo GTI any day.

    • @jayaynikkal

      Those ST200's going for 330k is crazy. That's what it cost brand new back then...

    • @WaseemKhan-iu4bh
      @WaseemKhan-iu4bh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Would never even consider that over a GTI especially to pay 330k for a $hitbox fiesta

    • @MIGerlag
      @MIGerlag 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@WaseemKhan-iu4bh If you want a “premium” car with a German brand image then the Polo GTi is for you. The Fiesta isn’t that however, the Fiesta is an absolute blast to drive & a decent low milage example is less than half the price of the new Polo GTi… (Real world price after dealer markup)
      The Fiesta is no “shitbox”… Everyone has their own taste, even so I feel that I speak for the majority of petrol heads & car enthusiasts that we don’t disrespect other vehicles just because it’s from a brand that we personally don’t like.
      It’s clear that you don’t know much about the Fiesta ST & you’re likely a German car brand or VW fanboy that wants to talk trash about other brands.
      Maybe you have a superiority complex idk, but we don’t talk like that here…
      I personally don’t like what the Polo GTi offers especially at its price point, within its segment & in comparison to other cars in its segment however, I still respect its existence, its capabilities & understand its appeal to some people.
      I would personally never spend my own money on any Polo however, I don’t talk trash talk it just because I personally don’t like it.
      When it comes to hot hatches I feel that the GTi is catering to the premium poser, that’s why I call it a fashion statement.
      The Polo defiantly does a few things better than the Fiesta ever has, however it’s still not for me, just as the Fiesta isn’t for you. Everyone wants different things out of a car…
      Most petrol heads &/or driving enthusiasts that are buying a new car for driving enjoyment will likely not be looking at that Polo brand new for that price. After dealer markup it’s in GR Yaris territory!!! Over R600K (Real world pricing) for a standard Polo GTi is madness!… maybe in a few years when that car has depreciated it’ll be worth another look for those sort of people. That is if the first owner hasn’t wrecked it with distasteful modifications…
      Enthusiasts that know their oats that are looking for a new car around R650K will take the GR Yaris over a Polo GTi every day of the week. I guarantee it!
      So in terms of affordability: R300K - R330K for an ST200 or approximately R240K for a decent low milage regular Fiesta ST is far better value for many than a new Polo GTi if you’re looking for a modern fun little driving machine.
      That’s obviously not what you’re looking for, I’d assume you prefer the “premium” brand image of the newer Polo GTi. That’s good, more power to you, just don’t trash talk other cars that you don’t like or know nothing about.
      If you have driven the Fiesta ST back to back with the GTi & other competitors you’d understand why its so well regraded in the fun & dynamic category. Sure the interior plastics aren’t as premium as a Polo nor does it have any of the tech frills that the Polo offers however, it is 10x more fun to drive than a Polo. The polo is a good car, its a fast car, but it’s bland & boring to drive in comparison to the Fiesta ST even the Mk7.
      Go look up the reviews of the Mk7 Fiesta ST by Richard Hammond (Old Top Gear), Chris Harris & others, you’ll see why its driving characteristics are so well regarded.

    • @WaseemKhan-iu4bh
      @WaseemKhan-iu4bh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MIGerlag while i agree it is a "fun" car to drive especially in comparison to the polo GTI which is a lot more bland and refined... at 300k i still wouldn't even consider the ST when you can pick up the previous gen Polo GTI with the 1.8TSI EA888.3...it's faster then the fiesta ST feels much more on edge than the new polo GTI while still having the high quality build quality, finish and sleek interior/tech that you would expect from a premium German car.

    Seems like we're not alone in Europe with the shock on the recently skyrocketing prices of Volkswagens. I'm not good in the Rand calculations, but seems like the rises in the recent 6 months are on an equal amount of +20-25%. It's crazy and people should be aware of the reasons - chip shortage, rising prices of resources etc. are only partial.
    The main source of recent horrendous VW policy is the aftermath of the Dieselgate - it made such a big harm to the German's budget plans they needed to launch cost-cutting policy and rise the prices. Look at the quality of materials in the B-Segment Volkswagens - harsh plastics, like in the budget Indian cars, every feature jumps the configured price up, lack of this famous solidness Volkswagen used to be famous of. Sit in the interior of Korean cars to see some savings on the materials don't have to be that radical. The era of Volkswagen we used to know is somehow over - the want to by 2030 sell less, more expensive and more profitable cars for wealthy Western Europeans, Americans and Chinese. The rest of the world isn't a thing for them anymore, apparently. Now we're seeing the introduction to this radical change. What a time to be alive.

      You are funny with all that crying. Harsh plastic ? U get that only on doors and it's ain't that bad. The overall quality is much better than in old Golfs and even new Skoda's. There is no savings on materials. U get a great screens, wheel and dashboard. All the new tech. Great little but fast and economic engines. I've seen how Fords and Kias look inside, u gotta be blind to compare it. If u can't afford it just don't buy it. But don't cry here and try to make it look bad.

Even Volkswagen owners are complaining about the problems with harsh, easy scratching, cheap materials in the latest B-segment models, especially in case of too expensive for this kind of policy T-Roc, made like budget Chinese crossover inside.
      PS "Great screens" - read about the infotainment lags, errors and issues owners complain worldwide, maybe this would wake up from this sweet dream. You know, your car can be cool, but never is perfect - you don't have to deny and write opposite stuff to anything negative you'll read about beloved Volkswagens online. "If you can't afford blah blah" - this argument makes you even weaker in this discussion, jesus.

    I queried the reason why VW chose to keep the engine the same in SA and they replied stating it is due to the fuel we use in SA. They have yet to reply why the fuel consumption rating increased from 5.9l/100KM (2018 GTI) to 6.4L/100KM in 2022 while still using the same power plant and gearbox.
