The wealth of music available and largely undiscovered from Jamaica, by me and my friends anyway - especially from the 70's and 80's is just unbelievable. I just can't listen to Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden forever - I have been getting so heavily into reggae for years now - also suits my vibe better as I roll into my 50's. Africa Must Be Free By 1983 is an amazing album and I LOVE the dub versions. This is a great channel - thanks for the content

The 80's in Jamaica was the Seaga days. One of the worst periods of time in Jamaica after due to the influence of corrupt politicians, political tribalism and illegal guns. Watching this video has enlightened me about a favourite musician Hugh Mundell. I had no idea him and Junior Reid were close friends. The piece about Tenor Saw being killed by Super Cat blew my mind! Makes me wonder if this is why Cat could not or chose not to return to Jamaica for many years.
From the lyrical content of the music changed so did people's perception.. its the history of Jamaica as an island why the country is so violent these days. Bring back the musical love we use to share. Peace 🎶🎶
I am glad for this channel I like the concept . thanks ras Dennis I would like you to do a story about delroy Wilson slim smith and don Drummond also roy Shirley they were very popular in England I would like to know when did they start and what really happens to them they were true Jamaican musicians
For a music which espouses peace, love and unity, the number of reggae artists who have fallen victim to gun violence is regrettale. Unfortunately as roots reggae gave way to dancehall the lyrical content changed , glorifying violence and lots of slackness.
No offense but how can we put Jah Cure ( for example) in this case. Not a dancehall artist as little as I know? Isn't it all in the person/ system/ peer group?

I remember the Hugh Mundell shooting. Tenor Saw's death in 1988 was another gut punch. Too many artists dead for absolute rubbish. The one that still gets me was the murders of General Echo, Fluxy and Stereophonic Sound owner Big John in November of 1980 by police.
Two of my favorites, gone to soon! The reggae landscape would sound a lot different if they were still with us! Rest In Power Gentlemen! What is the background dub that’s rocking?
I read that Hugh's wife wrote a book but was not paid. I read on her blog that she wondered how the murderer knew where they would be at that time, she thought that there was more to this. I just ponder if she exposed her idea in her book & got killed for that.
How the jamaican dancehall scene transformed froim the peaceful rivalry of the early DJ era of U-Roy, I-Roy, Al Capone, Big Youth and Prince Jazzbo to an American gangsta rap style scene riddled with violence, masochism, sexism...Really beats me🤔
They killed Bob? By giving him cancer? It's a fact CIA tried to kill him, being afraid of his massive influence that could be used for communism. Still I do believe it was cancer what did it's bad work.
@@brownsista777 Well that's true. I often personally refer to the early rap era with Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5, Run DMC and later MC Hammer and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince as " The Age of the Innocent" although in reality it really was anything but...😆😆😆😆

Tenor saw death shrouded in mystery. Some rumours saying promoters dealt with him so not to pay tenorsaw show money. Some rumours even say nitty-gritty may have been the killer. Supercat get upset about this and deal with nitty gritty at the superpower record shop brooklyn
Tenor Saw mom disclosed in an interview that Saw had told her he had impregnated a white girl, it Texas then, the white boys who are rabid racist, this would not sit well with them. So based on how Saw body was found, I am convinced he was chained behind a pick up truck and dragged, this is an evil demonic savage act that would only be conceived in the mind of a rabid racists. So this video also clarified that he (Saw) did not die from gunshot wounds nor being stabbed to death. White supremacist savages killed that golden voice because of the dis-ease that infects them!
True. And the bad one get away with 6 years prison: Jah cure I mean. And a lot of them gone to soon by bad life style I think like Gregory and Dennis. But Lee Perry passed away on a pretty old age. Legend.
Guns.... I found bullet shells just on the road side. Bringing in guns from USA by drug deals, the slackness and gangster style promotion also not helpful. But the roots of all evil is money... How ironic that for the one love peace concert guns were brought in by the music equipment from USA. CIA they say. Afraid for socialism in their backyard.

What are you talking about? Tenor Saw was hit by a car and killed as confirmed by Burro Banton in videos on youtube. Nitty Gritty didn't threaten Super Cat for shooting Tenor Saw, he (probably) threatened Jr Cat for damaging his car and Super Cat got involved. Please do some proper research.
August 1988 he was killed by a motor vehicle in Houston, Texas, with the official cause of death determined as a case of hit and run accident, although other sources insist that he was murdered.[3][4] He died at 21 years of age. Strangely on 26 October 1988 the newspaper Jamaica Gleaner reported that Tenor Saw was shot and killed in New York City (Tenor Saw had been dead for around two months by this point).[5] Tenor Saw is regarded as one of the most influential singers of the early digital reggae era of the mid-1980s?
Logic would tell us that Saw died by hit and run. The cars drive on the other side of the road. If you aren't used to that when you cross you look left instead of right when you cross. It makes sense to me. He probably wasn't dead straight away and if the driver had stopped they might have been able to get him to a hospital and save him. It's sad that he died a slow death due to his injuries
