Great job explaining what you're doing/saying while working on the console. Wish more (or any at all) videos would actually explain the difference between the slim models and which laser gos to which console at least you point out the fact that there is indeed different variants within the slim models, most other videos would make somebody who doesn't know believe that there are two PS2 models: fat and slim. While that is true aesthetically the internals (including laser assembly) can differ enough to be incompatible with one another such as the 9xxxxx and the 7xxxxx slim models for instance. My only recommendation would be closer up shots while working on specific components as opposed to the bird's eye view of the whole console and the work bench. Thanks.
Hello, i have a question. My ps2 slim laser can read PS2 Games, but can't read PS1 Games... should i replace a new laser? (i did find the right voltage for the CD potentiometer, but still didn't work)
@@PghGameFix Noted, thank you sir, appreciate it 😁 . Ouhh... i should've known it, i just wasted my time on looking for the right measurement 😂 thank you very much for the info & the vid 🐢👍
Hi, I had a PS2 fat, years ago that got stolen but still have about 20 games. So I went ahead and bought a slim 90001 on eBay. I haven't tried it yet because the seller sent me the power cord for the external power supply brick model. What's been crazy is, every time I go to look at parts. The older external power supply models information pops up. I can tell it's never been opened. So I guess my question is, should I open it and clean it, if it works alright? Or just use it as is, if it works alright? I'm sure there's dust and old grease on the laser slides and gears. Also, I've been reading about the battery and lid sensors needing replaced or cleaned. Your video is very informative. But it'd be nice for the videos to have a zoom on your overhead camera. To zoom in on the work. But thanks so much for the information on the laser replacement. I don't know if they weaken over time or just fail. But it's nice to know they're still available. Thanks again 👍
Thanks for watching. There really isn't a reason to open it if it's working. The small fan generally doesn't get plugged up. I hardly ever replace the battery. It will hold most settings without it.
It's an old vid so I really don't have anything else. If you are talking about removing solder from the safety bridge, just use a clean tip, and give it a wipe. It's not that hard.
thanks for the video, question (I know this is an old video) I followed this to replace my ribbon on my ps2 slim. Closed it up and now when I turn on the ps2 slim the laser makes a lot of vibrating noise. I didnt see a video like that on your channel so thought I would ask. I made sure I lined up the "teeth" on the motor as well.
The teeth are designed to slip if needed. BUT... if they are packed with old grease... they probably need cleaned. Just wipe them out with a paper towel
@@PghGameFix thanks for the reply......cleaned the teeth before I set it back on there they were black, EDIT: did this before your reply I meant and still getting the vibration noise, could it be anything else?
My PS2 is having reading issues. It will launch any DVD based game, it will just take longer than usual to boot them. It will not read purple disc games, at all. PS1 games will boot up, instantly. So, you're saying that even if I try to adjust the laser... At some point the laser will completely fail, and a new laser is the only way to actually resolve the issue? If so, do I have to get a laser that matches the exact model/sku PS2 that I have? Or will any PS2 laser, work? I have the very last PS2 model/sku that was made, so that might make it a hard to find, replacement, as that model was the shortest manufactured, run, by Sony.
The slim ps2's can all use the same laser. I change a lot of them these days, and it's really not worth trying to adjust it. A new laser should be less than $20... and will let your ps2 work correctly for a long time, where an adjustment may only work for a couple months (or less) if you are using it a lot.
I have a ps2 slim that I want to get working again. The laser is good I tink, but I think the motor is the problem. I want to buy 1 but I'm afraid that It could be a other thing. I hope you see this!
@@reddoggames3011 Have you replaced the Capacitors yet? All the Game Gear's have issues with them. I have one on the bench right now, and they have leaked so bad, there is some board damage. 99% of the time, new caps take care of any picture issues. (assuming the screen isn't physically broken) With that said, there are a few strange versions. The "K" version has 5 screen section drivers, and they are known to go bad. The "McWill" screen is $110 just for the parts, and it's not easy to install. It would be around $150 to do it. Another $60 for the caps.
Inside the laser unit, there are 2 lasers, and it will change between them. It is possible for one to be bad, and not the other. You can try to adjust the DVD side... but I would probably just install a new laser.
I would say it's either stuck... or defective. Use a cotton swab... and gently give it a nudge and make sure it can move. If it's free to move.. and the ribbon in the bottom is in correctly... then the laser itself is defective.
@@PghGameFix Yes I already did. I kinda feel that somethnig in the circuit deck could be a problem rather than the laser but i don't know if it's the case or not..
Super helpful! I'm getting ready to tackle this project on my PS2.
I'm glad the video helped

Yes. There is 2 lasers inside the unit. One for DVD and one for CD. I'm guessing the CD one is going bad.
