      I've watched Nigel repot and root prune so much that when I do it if feels like I've learned by osmosis. I find myself even saying, "So here I go," as I make my cuts. Scary!

    Thanks for another great video Nigel! Watching your videos is what encouraged me to actually try my hand at bonsai with the trees I have access to. For me that’s random seedlings I’ve found in friends and families yards and gardens and even one out of a gutter(or Evers troughs as you call em). I aspire to be on your level one day!

    Great series of vids these last 4. I think I have been watching your channel since 2014 or so and is the only channel I watch every single episode. I love your take on Canadian bonsai, and that the trees look like their full sized counter parts. My first exposure to miniature trees was through a sci-fi book. I don't remember the name but in it earth was called Urth and the people were on a space station or ship. One of the characters was an older man who grew small trees as a forest. He tied each trees top with string to pull them all over in the same direction to create the appearance of a wind swept grove..

    We used to sell Japanese Black Pine trees at the first nursery that I worked at in the mid-70’s. They were probably my favorite tree at the time. Even though the largest were at most only ten feet tall, they had those marvelous crooked trunks and contorted branches. They weren’t cheap, as tends to be the case with most slow growing plants. When installed as a focal point, their sculptural presence alters and enhances most any landscape.

    I've got outdoor trees again. I saved one from the gravel pit, torn out by the loader and it had a little friend with it, spruce. Seems to be holding on so far. It has really neat movement. I'm not touching it until next spring. I will learn to keep these outdoor trees alive through winter! Haha!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds very promising, winter is so tough up north, you may have to put it in the ground and build a cold frame over it and even possibly heat it some cold nights!

    Hi again Nigel, just wondering if you know where Silver Maple are found in the wild. They are distinctly a flood plain tree often found right on the rivers edge with roots that dangle just touching the water. I know how you some times like to try to grow species as they grow in nature. For me a forest of silver maple is not complete without water. The other challenges you already know of is the large size of the leaves. I have only grown them as a single tree and even so the large size and shape of the trees limit the number of leaves in a bonsai canopy.

      Field maple (acer campestre) will, apparently, grow from root cuttings. Peter Chan from Herons Bonsai refers to it often. Some will, but many will not. Nothing wrong with experimenting; give it a go - what is the worst that can happen?!

    I have grown silver maple as bonsai. The roots grow prolifically. Some will develop decent fall colors although as they age they lose some of their color. Tar spot is probably the only thing that will make them ugly.

      I have read that planting trees individually in a group is NOT advised as it is almost impossible to position them naturally. Trees grow out of the ground together in a certain, like the trees in this video did in the first pot. I would have thought itd be better never to seperate them but 🤷‍♂️

    • @ph-vf5hx
      @ph-vf5hx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will add that Mr Saunders did a nice job in this case, and i think hes an exception as he jas plenty of practice 🙂

    • @mattbrennan647
      @mattbrennan647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ph-vf5hx ,, I agree, especially when you transition from a group planting to a true forest planting. Several years ago I sewed a handful of red maple seeds randomly in a tray and just let natural selection do it’s job. I’m very happy with the results and its development. Thanks, keep growing

    • @TheBonsaiZone

      If I use organic matter in my soil, it seems to attract the squirrels and the birds! I try and keep my bonsai area away from trees that the squirrels can run up and escape when I go outside. This seems to help.
