- GitHub profiles can determine a lot about a dev. What does yours say about you?

GitHub says all 😂 nah...
And the primeagen video too :D
Your editing is S-tier, and the comedy is golden.
"I learned SSH, GNU Screen and Git before I even wrote code" Actually that's the right way to do it! In order to program a computer first you must learn how to USE a computer, so the first I thing I teach my students is (POSIX) Shell, tmux and Git, so they can navigate and work, THEN we do coding. Somehow the norm became the exception...
I think the order doesn't matter but they are useful either way. I learned all of the early on as well but I wouldn't say it's necessary
I dunno, I went to tech in ‘92-94 … I first learnt theory of how computers worked, then learnt Pascal, then COBOL. All in DOS. No ssh, no Screen/Tmux, and certainly no version control. I understood what I was trying to program, what the capabilities of the computer & language where.
Sure there is a benefit to understanding POSIX and more, but they aren’t essential. We understood enough to control the computer through the language we worked with. There was virtually no direct working with DOS outside of when we played games outside of class time.
(First reply lost for reasons unknown). While there are definite benefits to understanding the environment it definitely isn’t required. I learnt programming back in 92-94. We had theory about how the computer worked, then first learnt pascal (in dos), then COBOL also in DOS.
We never once learned about posix, shells, tmux, screen, source control, or much much more. Yet we left being able to write programs, and we learnt how to write our source code to paper for submitting our final project (aside … don’t do more than you need to, that’s a loooooot of hand writing code COBOL on paper … don’t forget your column alignments!)
Sure those things are useful to know now, but they aren’t the be all and end all.

theo has a degree in yapping
??
yeah all he does is take someone else's content and yaps about it
He really does
More and more common. Here's a free interaction.

Prime passing out face down without moving a single sheet… he literally copped to this on a neetcode react video a while ago. Basically said “before my wife I’d never had a mattress off the floor”.
The man doesn’t lie.

A NixOS video would be pretty neat. It's...a learning curve to get started, and NixOS not following the typical Linux file system conventions can also be a huge pain when running things not part of the NixOS ecosystem, but the ease of customizability and rollback is very cool.

Bro took almost 30 minutes to watch a 5 minute vid
this is insufferable
yeah I don't really get why are people watching this type of content
@@justsample9185, I watched it to the end
@@justsample9185 why r u here if you don't want to watch it?
Hah, yeah. "Ooh, a thumbnail of a vid I made. This is what that video was about..."
I'm not watching the rest of this.
He should really consider not doing reaction videos.
I think Git replaced bitkeeper, not SVN.
The creators of git said they started with the idea to build a better svn. Great rant presentation about it on TH-cam somewhere.
I was working at Montavisita software when bitkeeper said linux had to pay. Within about 3 months git was made and being used for the linux kernel. It was pretty amazing TBH
@@7th_CAV_Trooper the first creator of git was Linus Torvalds - who built it to replicate the Bitkeeper workflow he was used to. The Bitkeeper Linux kernel license was revoked because someone tried to reverse engineer their protocol. I guess one of the maintainers who took over git development may have had that goal, but git and SVN work very differently.
@@simonabunker indeed he did. I could not find the video I wanted to find, but I found this one (ID idLyobOhtO4) where he rants about how CVS and SVN sucked, so GIT was supposed to be nothing like CVS. He does mention Bitkeeper as an inspiration for GIT in this video. This is what happens when you get old - you forget stuff. lol
I’m excited about the prospect of a Theo Nix video
I remember at first, I was uploading files to GitHub one by one 😂.
My github is completely silent because of NDAs...
It is supposed to be this way. You either code in your free time if you enjoy what you do or your github is completely empty :)
Additional thing - they do fair pricing based on location. Great stuff.
Back in 2009, when I joined GitHub, I assumed I needed to know what the heck I was doing before issuing a PR to a FOSS repo.
Prime should have a t-shirt "The Wifeagen is the reason I don't live like this"
Would unironically love a deep-dive in nix. That's also on my read-list
Your comment about open source is just 💯
Oof the "stupid questions" part. How to destroy people's will to learn. I mean if a person doesn't know exactly how to formulate a question or doesn't know everything about it that's why he asks the questions so they are not stupid imho.
Brazil mention 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷(sorry)
my man fell in love with linus
My contribution graph shows commits basically every day except weekends until July last year. That says my company switched from using personal GitHub accounts to Enterprise Managed accounts. (and that I haven't done open source stuff for a few years lol)
I didn't know that's how they were monotizing either, suddenly interested. That's just the kind of thing that would work in today's market, VERY smart approach!
15:20 Theo probably: "They are stealing our coffee!" - The difference is you drink the coffee, they sell you the coffee 🤑
You looks glowing Theo, nice!
You totally should do some Nix videos, Nix was always the one thing I could never get into despite lots of trying (and help from a friend who daily dives Nix).
nix is quite interesting, would be cool to listen your take on it
WHY IS YOUR ARC DIFFERENT?????
I am currently spending a lot of time to become a specialist in things below layer 7.
Hard to display my knowledge beyond what an internship and cert can prove.
Self hosted: Yes. Not anymore, but I do run a Discord bot out of my place.
arc now on windows les gooo
21:32 Zouk or Lambada would have been the first thing to come to my mind, but this is because I’m an actual Zouk dancer who is also aware of Lambada
In terms of nix, you like apple so just use determinate nix installer and then use nix flakes like a fancier version of vs code workspace or container file.
If you make a dev env and some flakes and are happy, consider making a server using nixos. (a real server, not a lambda, you may not understand)
I've been a mix between the Vimmer and the Linux maxxer for something close to 20 years now, and I designed my own split ergo keyboard... But I'm a full shark dev most of the time.
Im not experienced enough to understand your lingo, good sir
As a parallel the metal community (music) is the same, you have your nu metal, metalcore, deathcore, hardcore enjoyers and then you have the "trve" metal enjoyers who listen to black, heavy, thrash metal etc, aka the backend elitists 😂
you should do a nix deep dive, its baller
What is -infra idea? I guess there is uploadathing, can you talk about it?
Back-end devs like their coffee the same way they like their Python code formatter - Black
I've been programming as a hobby for several years now, but I haven't contributed anything to open source yet because I don't think that my work is good enough.
When I have a satisfactory project going, I'll upload it to my Github.
My ambition: I want to replace the HTML/JavaScript/CSS trifecta.
14:37 it's a vimdiagram... I'll see myself out
The difference between git and github is kinda the same between porn and pornhub
It was BitKeeper, not SVN. The maintainer decided he would start charging so Linus wrote git. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitKeeper
how tf do you manage to react for 28min on a 5min video.
19:05 does torrent client count?
what if we use gitlab
8:21 and we still 0:56 into the video 🤣
how do you watch this stuff
Got one lesson from this: Fork Chromium
I always ask myself, how do big companies make money off "open-source" projects. I don't get it.
It wasn't svn that was going private, it was something called bitkeeper which was closed source, but the samba programmer Andrew tridgell started to write open source tools by reverse engineering it a bit and bitkeeper lost their shit, threatened to change the licence and as a result linus created git, but not because he wanted to insult Andrew. That's just an internet rumour ;) ;) ;) absolutely nooooooooooo basis of fact in that at all haha

Theo i never had to go to the original video to watch it because of the amount of yapping 30 minute !?

I have no idea what the actual video is about when you keep pausing just to make nonsqeuiturs every 3 seconds. Feels excessive.
28 minute video reacting to a 4 minute one. I couldn't
not subversion, bitkeeper
Do I need to fork the Chromium Repo or can I just create my own named Chromium?
