Unfortunately with the GH5 you're not able to call up the waveform during recording, I'm not exactly sure why this is or why when you have display info ON for HDMI output that the waveform won't show. This has been one feature that's curiously missing and would be nice to see it while recording incase you need to adjust a variable ND filter during a take. You need to check Ansel Adams and the greyscale chart you can shoot and see your values not be svengali. Using either the 8 or 10-chip model will immediately let you know visually you are within the dynamic range of your camera for your purposes. You can then make your three parameter changes for the desired look in the camera. The color chip chart is similarly important in starting at a known state. This saves a "fix it in post" mentality and frees you to show your talents in other areas of a presentation.

Thanks for this video. This made me switch from histograms to wave form displays both on my GH5 as well as on the E2C. Unfortunately the inexpensive field monitors from Liliput don't have waveform, only histogram. I wish I had seen this video earlier. I do not own a TV, but I got my mum a smart TV recently and first thing I did was checking my recent stuff on TH-cam. I was flabbergasted by the highlights. What had looked nice and a bit high key on my Eizo monitors was simply blown away on the TV. As you said in the video...

TV's are a hit and miss sometimes unless you have a more higher end one, even some cheaper field monitors won't be able to display the 90+ IRE range. So generally I'll stay between 10-85% when exposing into the camera, sometimes I'll push 90 knowing that I'll lower it a little bit in color grading to compensate for the many different types of TVs out there. If you already have an field monitor you like to use, most of them come with something called "False Color" I haven't made a tutorial about it specifically but its one my favorite exposure tools because you can look at the video frame and know exactly how its being exposed and where the overblown highlights are. But if you don't have that with you, the waveform will definitely help you keep the overall picture in good exposure ranges, and as you get more and more and more used to it, you can see where someones skin is, the background, the floor, etc etc. Thanks again for stopping by! thx for the great info, btw, if I were to use an external monitor on the GH5S, connected via HDMI, I can't seem to get the waveform monitor to be displayed there. Any work-around here? coz the flip-screen on the GH5 is really tiny esp for people with bad eyesight.

The waveform is definitely a major asset, here's to hoping that Panasonic gives us False Color either via firmware or in the GH6 to really help with exposure of a scene. (Liliput Monitor has this feature in it) I enjoy the Liliput monitor for what it is, a cheap monitor that allows me to get a clear reference image before I roll the camera. It's nice and sharp, use false color to assure every part of the image is lit the way I need, and it has an HDMI out if I want to pass through my camera wirelessly to video village for the directors or producers. That being said, the 7" is a bit unwieldy without completely rigging out the camera. If you're on a tripod it's wonderful to use. That being said, I may eventually go to this new 5" version I've been seeing around thats designed like the SmallHD 5" thats attached to a L-mount on your cameras hotshoe. For the productions I'm with we move very very fast and I'd like to have a monitor that size on my camera so that I can quickly move and reference the shot. Hope this helps! I was recently sold to HLG due to your videos but my question to you today is: when using HLG, do you still aim for 50 to 60 IRE for faces/Skin?

When you are in HLG AND using the Gh5 waveform, you will want to aim for that 40-60 IRE range for the skin. When you bring it into your editor, if you view it in rec709 mode. Just pull down the exposure back to normal ranges and your skin will land around there. If you are editing in HDR mode, then it will display as normal from the get go. Hope this helps! A great lesson and big help. I just got Vlog on GH5 and this was very good for me. I've been using it some but now I'm ready to dive in. Do this basic apply to Vlog as well. You did not say. Also do you use you histogram. If not what do you set it at. ? Thanks again.
Hey hey SUTV! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Glad this video was helpful. When I made it I did not have V-Log-L. The V-log L will have different clipping zones so you're not going to be able to push your exposure up to 100, I think it clips at 80%. But yes the basics apply as well for you to stay within the V-log range so that when you begin to color grade it you can stretch it all back out. I leave my histogram on for general purposes to quickly see if I have clipped my shadows or highlights for quick shots here and there. I'm not sure what you meant by "if i don't use my histogram, what do I set it at". Were you talking about Zebra's? I don't really use it, but I would also suggest you look at some videos explain Zebra's as they are a handy tool as well to see if you want to back off on over exposing some of your shots if you need detail in the highlights. Waveform is one of the biggest selling points for the GH5, (and underutilized). When shooting in C-Log2, the waveform is compressed in camera (& stretched back to normal when grading in post); is this the same for V-Log on the GH5?
I unfortunately did not purchase the code to unlock my V-Log feature. From what some people are saying in the comments that the waveform will clip off around 80% when you're in V-log mode. However... the GH5 is capable of a V-Log assist that Sony also has where you can imply a LUT of your choosing so you can see where you are at once you go into post productions, I'm going to assume the waveform monitor will then register the full range...but I don't know for sure. Man this channel is really dope and so informative !! Just a question : when you're filming outside, for example when travelling and dealing with only the natural light you have but you have a very shiny or contrasted scene, you can't always properly expose both the shadows and the highlights within the 10-90% values, or even between the 0-100%. In this case you have to choose one of the two to be correctly exposed (regarding what you want to show and preserve) ?? or there's a way to "condense" a bit the values to fill all the scene within the 0-100% range ?? thanx a lot

In terms of "condensing", I don't have the most experience with this color profile but LOG (V-Log L) more or less does something like that. What it does is it compresses the Luma to preserve as my detail and dynamic range so that when you color grade it back out you will have more out of the image than a regular color profile. The only thing I don't like is that this is a paid upgrade ($100) and its done in the most annoying way possible. You gotta buy a code printed on a piece of paper thats shipped to you... oye But there is some good news for someone that doesn't necessarily want to learn about color grading LOG. The GH5 has a color profile called "HLG". This actually has very close to the same dynamic range of V-LOG L, and if you take some of these concepts I showed you hear with the waveform as well as taking a look at my test and findings. Vectorscopes and Waveforms should be included in every camera that does video in a professional environment, heck I would pay $100.00 or more if every camera I bought had these. You would save so much time and your product would be so much better.

I don’t think the zooming in on the subject would help you finding out whether the subject is light up correctly or not because in most cases, the moment you start zooming in, the aperture would change which would cause your footage to look darker which might give you the results you want, but when you zoom out and your aperture becomes really wide, let’s say zoomed in, it was f5.6 and when you zoom out it’s, f1.8, those two different values will give you significantly different exposures for your subject.

Hey TLDR, apologies for the question but I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's wrong. When I load footage from a GH5 into Da Vinci the Color Curves are tiny bumps rather than voluptuous mountains. I can get them bigger if I over-exposure everything but a small part of the frame. But that's useless. Shooting in broad daylight only gets them about 1/4 the height of the Color Curves section. Tried Cine-D, HLG, and Natural. HLG was the worst but all were pretty bad. Any idea why the color curves are so tiny? Simple adjustments like an S curve are impossible. Using a Color Space Trasformer doesn't help

The only thing I can think of is to make sure your davinci color management is correct in terms of what your input source is and what color space you want to work in. Everything other than HLG is a Rec709 source (sRGB) and the HLG would be rec2020. If these are all correct. In my opinion when looking at the curves mine don't show big mountains either. I don't think its really suppose to show it unless your entire image is comprised of on color. In the GH5 I believe waveform is only available in video mode. But yes, waveforms can be useful for photographers as well to judge exposure when using continuous lights.

I think your Ninja Inferno should have false color in the same menu where you can turn on and off the waveform and such. Most of Atomos's monitors from what I can remember have most of the basic monitoring features and just differ in terms of recording codec, size, and design...though I could be wrong, i've never gotten to use an Atomos product yet.
I mostly expose my shots by bringing everythig just before clipping, which is ok for a lot of shots but sometimes I would like to expose for middle grey. But where is middle grey on the wavefrom when using VLOGL, because not all of the waveform is used when in VLOGL?
Hey hey again Chris! In V-Log L for middle grey, I believe its one line under the middle bold line. That should be about 40%. I think V-Log L was like 41% or 42% for middle grey. I only just started shooting V-Log L and Slog3 on my cameras, I have no idea why I was so intimidated by it before, its been great using the technical 709 lut and then tweaking things. I still haven't dived into manually correcting a Log image from scratch.

The "range" on the waveform is still from 0-100 (for the sake of simplicity) and depending on the camera's ability whether it be 10 stops or 14 stops, it will divide up those stops within the 0-100 range. Correct, V-log when being acquired does not follow the rules of 0-100 on the waveform as it is compressing and flattening the information. I think its like 15-80? When you bring it into your editor and either manual grade or use a technical LUT, it will pull it to 100 if you are exposing your highlight to 80. You're most welcome. Aperture is part of it, playing around with light positioning and intensity means if you bring the light closer or further away, or dim it etc. Long story short, Shadows and highlights is not something you can directly set in the camera, you have to manipulate the lights in the shot to adjust where you want shadows and highlights to fall. I know me trying to describe it through text is not going to make a lot of sense, because at the same time, yes, you can change the scenes shadows and highlights by playing around with the ISO and shutter speed. But I would heavily advise you don't do that as you are learning from the beginning. With your current setup, I would leave your camera at these settings. Aperture - f/2.8 ISO - 400 Shutter 1/50th. These are your basic settings and only the aperture should adjust when needed. From here begin to experiment with lights whether it be from the windows, flashlights, house lamps and see what they do to your face and the objects around you in the shoot. (Do you need to put the light closer or further back or put a piece of wax paper 2 feet in front of it?) As you learn to manipulate light, thats where the magic of filmmaking begins. Camera settings is not the quick way to learn how to make a fun shot. My best advice is to look at one of your favorite movies of all time and favorite scene. Can you attempt to recreate the lighting of that scene? This is the fastest way to learn, trying and experimenting to see what results happen. By the time you've played around with lights for one week, my tutorial would no longer be relevant to your skill level :) Give it a go, try anything and everything and see what your camera sees, and of course have fun! I believe that is correct, that if your GH5 is set to shutter angle mode that it will automatically double and you don't have to worry about manually changing the shutter speed. I personally do not go this route for no other reason than I learned with photography shutter calculations. Also I'm not sure if other cameras out there allow this mode like the GH5 does, I'm sure they all will at some point, but for now all the cameras can operate with photography shutter modes. Absolutely! I'm here rooting for man, have fun and always keep experimenting and learning!

A glamor shot, in my mind, would have a waveform that's more flat and not harsh with shadows, everything is bright and glowy, so the waveform most likely won't have spikes. If I'm thinking of something id see in a high fashion shoot that's moody, there would be more contrast between the models face and their shadow areas, all with soft transition in the shadows, nothing harsh. So the waveform in this example would have some hill like spike points here and there. The best way to learn is to take any digital photograph or videos you have and put them into your video editing program. From there turn on the waveform monitor in your editing program and look at what the values are. From there you can mimic the same lighting by trying to achieve the same waveform values. This is a bit unrelated to the topic, but gear wise I use the Gh5s with the Viltrox ef-m2, would the sigma 18-35 work with that? Would there be vignetting?

But he noticed that the GH5s seems to be sampling a larger size of the sensor than the GH5. So there might be some vignetting that will appear. As far as noise and image quality. Also I’ve been trying to find my favorite picture profile for the gh5s that doesn’t have a lot of noise in the blacks of the video, so if you have any suggestions on that then that would be great. I unfortunately don't have a GH5s...yet, I'll definitely be adding it to my kid (Pending performances of the BMPCC 4k) I think the GH5 and GH5s are an insane pairing for just about every shooting condition. Definitely let me know when you've posted some tests. For me I'm one of the few that are not bothered by the noise grain in the shadows because of how much contrast I generally have in my shots. However I totally get it if you're going for a dim feel in a scene and you suddenly don't have the contrast to offset the eyes. So, it actually works as a "rotated" histogram, so it gives you the advantage of seeing exactly the places which are dark/bright according to your video?
Hey hey PicsView! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! I'm not as familiar with the term "rotated" histogram, but I get what you're saying. You are correct, from left to right on the waveform is a depiction of your video from frame left to right, giving you the ability to see what could be too bright and too dark. I say "could be" because there is another exposure tool out there that is even better (in my opinion) to see how you're exposing your scene. Its called, "false color" it hasn't really found its way into consumer camera's just yet, but is widely available to use on cheap external monitors. That tool takes the guessing game out of what you're seeing on a waveform. Thanks again for stopping by and i’ll see you in the next one!
when you mention that your highest is 90%... are you using V-Log L for that or the other picture style? cause afaik the VLog-L profile will cap the highlight reported to 80 percent, even my zebras gets capped to 80 when i use VLog L
80 in V-Log is equivalent to 100 in non-Log, so when you switch to V-Log you'll see the waveform shift downwards. Beyond 80 and it's clipping- no info retained.
i see so as i have read also... whenever i shoot and my priority is skin t ones, how low of an IRE you would go to retain those highlights? typically i expose the skin around 50-60 IRE
Ezekiel Fernandez I ETTR for Log, so if your priority is skin tones I’d happily let really bright highlights clip and get a decent exposure on the face that can be brought down in post

I unfortunately did not purchase the V-Log L activation key, not sure if I will in the near future. One thing i'd be interested to know is when you have V-log assist turned on to either a Rec. 709 or a custom LUT, if the waveform will report back the full IRE range or still only report up to 80. In terms of trying to retain highlights while keeping skintones in a nice mid gray area on the waveform. This will heavily depend on your ability to light or modify available light in your scene. For documentary run and gun it may be difficult, but for lit productions you'll just have to make sure you can light your talent bright enough to even it out against the brightest part of your scene. With Zebra's you have to select a certain IRE point and only when you reach that IRE is when the Zebras will show. Zebras are definitely a great quick tool to see if you're about to overexpose and you can make quick adjustments on the fly to lower exposure to get rid of the Zebras to know you're not over exposed. @@TLDR_filmmaker Thanks! I'm an audio guy so I pay a lot attention to sound :D I was looking for a used GH5 or GH5s to up my video making game (I make music production tutorials), so I was looking for all the information I could find to choose the camera to buy. I finally got a used GH5 :)
Ahhh that makes sense, I have to admit that I am still learning everyday about sound in general. I know enough, but am always constantly tinkering with plug-in settings and seeing what works. This video was year #1 on youtube so my sound mix was all over the place! I'm so happy to hear you were able to locate a used GH5. Honestly to this day the GH5 is still one heck of a workhorse camera for its quality and abilities. It may not be the vloggers tool of choice, but for everyone else it does an insane amount. In terms of lenses there are some great Native options that are small, compact, and just makes the whole experience fun when you add the smartphone app ability. I personally use the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 as my stand working lens, and then I purchased the Panasonic 20mm f1.7, 25mm f1.7, and 42.5 f1.7 for most special shots. Those primes are tiny and makes it easy for me to pack up and go. You will see a lot of references to the Sigma 18-35 with adapters, which I do own and use, however its a large lens and I feel it only really excels for filmmakers that are doing narrative story telling. With your music production tutorials you probably only need the Olympus 12-40 and that will cover you for all your needs. Keep your ISO at 400 if you can, I film in the natural profile as it feels the most pleasing without needing to color grade. If you dial in your lighting, even with colors if you are using them, I don't feel theres any major reason to film in 10bit for youtube. 8 bit with dialed in colors and exposure is just fine. And thats about it that I can think of to get you going with your GH5! Question: Do you by any chance have a video on how to best mix your karaoke vocals to a karaoke track? This has been hard for me to find a definitive answer early on. Over the years I realize that a compressor definitely helped keeping my vocals in a better dynamic range for the songs I sing. Playing with reverb and echo to match the song a little bit better. Where I run into trouble is making my voice pop out and not get lost. I've started playing with a "Stereo Spreader" plugin and moving certain frequency through out the space, it's sounding better but definitely doesn't sound like a produced track. If you got a video on how that works, awesome! Thanks again for your time!
@@TLDR_filmmaker Thanks for a detailed answer! I've got a basic Panasonic 12-60 mm lens for the GH5, and I guess that's gonna be all I need for now. I am tempted to record 10-bit footage and try some crazy color tweaks, but I'm gonna start out with basic 8-bit thing and slowly discover all the options. I also work as a general visual artist, so I love playing with possibilities, doing some silly effects in my videos. As for mixing voice for music: A compressor is a must - you need to make sure the voice is more or less in similar loudness all the time so you can make sure it's audible above the music all the time. If it doesn't cut through, you can help it by reducing some mids/lower highs (500 Hz - 3 kHz) in the backing track to make room for the voice. You can also boost 1-3 kHz range a little bit in your vocal to give it more presencse, be careful not to over do it. Also - I always use a de-esser after the compressor to reduce sibilants - these often are painful to listen to and will be the first thing that sounds bad when you make your voice louder in the mix. A bit or reverb and delay can go a long way afterwards to give the vocal track some extra musicality, though that heavily depends on the style of music you're working with. I've done an exhaustive tutorial about producing voice overs, but not vocals for songs, gotta make that up sometime :) Good luck with your musical endeavors!

Ah gotcha, in terms of making money with youtube I would suggest checking out @videoinfluencers and @thinkmediaTV , both channels are great and filled with valuable information on what to do when building your channel as well as where you can make money from it. As far as making ads and filming stuff for companies. That is something that comes with practice and knowing what you enjoy filming. For example, I have all the gear and knowledge to film a wedding, but I don't enjoy filming weddings because it's not what I'm passionate about. So I would see if you have any friends that have small or start up businesses and see if they have something cool to offer that you can capture on video for them and edit something together. I would study other companies social media videos (basic ones) and see which one you can replicate at this current time. Create a few for free to practice and also to get your name out and eventually you will have your own style of video that you can show potential clients in the future. In the end I don't have as much experience in this field, I have shot my fair share of small videos for companies but they were all very corporate and not creatively stimulating for me. But if this is something you want to go into, its really just doing a few for free to prove you can do it and then as you grow your skill set, you can begin reaching out to clients and show them your work and let them know how hiring you can be beneficial for them. In the end its all about selling yourself and what you have to offer, similar to how camera companies sell themselves to us. Hope this helps!

This is definitely a wonderful feature, one word from other users and commenters below, it seems that while in V-log mode the Waveform won't use the full spectrum of the waveform, but will only be in the Light levels of Vlog 20%-80% I think? Unfortunately with the GH5 you're not able to call up the waveform during recording, I'm not exactly sure why this is or why when you have display info ON for HDMI output that the waveform won't show. This has been one feature that's curiously missing and would be nice to see it while recording incase you need to adjust a variable ND filter during a take.

You need to check Ansel Adams and the greyscale chart you can shoot and see your values not be svengali. Using either the 8 or 10-chip model will immediately let you know visually you are within the dynamic range of your camera for your purposes. You can then make your three parameter changes for the desired look in the camera. The color chip chart is similarly important in starting at a known state. This saves a "fix it in post" mentality and frees you to show your talents in other areas of a presentation.

Thanks for this video. This made me switch from histograms to wave form displays both on my GH5 as well as on the E2C. Unfortunately the inexpensive field monitors from Liliput don't have waveform, only histogram.
I wish I had seen this video earlier. I do not own a TV, but I got my mum a smart TV recently and first thing I did was checking my recent stuff on TH-cam. I was flabbergasted by the highlights. What had looked nice and a bit high key on my Eizo monitors was simply blown away on the TV. As you said in the video...

I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! TV's are a hit and miss sometimes unless you have a more higher end one, even some cheaper field monitors won't be able to display the 90+ IRE range. So generally I'll stay between 10-85% when exposing into the camera, sometimes I'll push 90 knowing that I'll lower it a little bit in color grading to compensate for the many different types of TVs out there. If you already have an field monitor you like to use, most of them come with something called "False Color" I haven't made a tutorial about it specifically but its one my favorite exposure tools because you can look at the video frame and know exactly how its being exposed and where the overblown highlights are. But if you don't have that with you, the waveform will definitely help you keep the overall picture in good exposure ranges, and as you get more and more and more used to it, you can see where someones skin is, the background, the floor, etc etc.

Unfortunately the Waveform overlay is only capable of being displayed on the GH5 flip screen. I'm not entirely sure why Panasonic does not allow this to be fed through the HDMI output, my guess is because of how its processed and not an actual video image. Unfortunate for sure, I too wish it could be displayed on an external monitor :(

The waveform is definitely a major asset, here's to hoping that Panasonic gives us False Color either via firmware or in the GH6 to really help with exposure of a scene. (Liliput Monitor has this feature in it)
I enjoy the Liliput monitor for what it is, a cheap monitor that allows me to get a clear reference image before I roll the camera. It's nice and sharp, use false color to assure every part of the image is lit the way I need, and it has an HDMI out if I want to pass through my camera wirelessly to video village for the directors or producers. That being said, the 7" is a bit unwieldy without completely rigging out the camera. If you're on a tripod it's wonderful to use.
That being said, I may eventually go to this new 5" version I've been seeing around thats designed like the SmallHD 5" thats attached to a L-mount on your cameras hotshoe. For the productions I'm with we move very very fast and I'd like to have a monitor that size on my camera so that I can quickly move and reference the shot.

I was recently sold to HLG due to your videos but my question to you today is: when using HLG, do you still aim for 50 to 60 IRE for faces/Skin?

I'm so happy to hear this video and tip was helpful! When you are in HLG AND using the Gh5 waveform, you will want to aim for that 40-60 IRE range for the skin. When you bring it into your editor, if you view it in rec709 mode. Just pull down the exposure back to normal ranges and your skin will land around there. If you are editing in HDR mode, then it will display as normal from the get go.

Glad this video was helpful. When I made it I did not have V-Log-L. The V-log L will have different clipping zones so you're not going to be able to push your exposure up to 100, I think it clips at 80%. But yes the basics apply as well for you to stay within the V-log range so that when you begin to color grade it you can stretch it all back out.
I leave my histogram on for general purposes to quickly see if I have clipped my shadows or highlights for quick shots here and there.
I'm not sure what you meant by "if i don't use my histogram, what do I set it at". Were you talking about Zebra's? I don't really use it, but I would also suggest you look at some videos explain Zebra's as they are a handy tool as well to see if you want to back off on over exposing some of your shots if you need detail in the highlights.

Waveform is one of the biggest selling points for the GH5, (and underutilized).
When shooting in C-Log2, the waveform is compressed in camera (& stretched back to normal when grading in post); is this the same for V-Log on the GH5?
I unfortunately did not purchase the code to unlock my V-Log feature. From what some people are saying in the comments that the waveform will clip off around 80% when you're in V-log mode. However... the GH5 is capable of a V-Log assist that Sony also has where you can imply a LUT of your choosing so you can see where you are at once you go into post productions, I'm going to assume the waveform monitor will then register the full range...but I don't know for sure.

Man this channel is really dope and so informative !! Just a question : when you're filming outside, for example when travelling and dealing with only the natural light you have but you have a very shiny or contrasted scene, you can't always properly expose both the shadows and the highlights within the 10-90% values, or even between the 0-100%. In this case you have to choose one of the two to be correctly exposed (regarding what you want to show and preserve) ?? or there's a way to "condense" a bit the values to fill all the scene within the 0-100% range ?? thanx a lot

I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! In terms of "condensing", I don't have the most experience with this color profile but LOG (V-Log L) more or less does something like that. What it does is it compresses the Luma to preserve as my detail and dynamic range so that when you color grade it back out you will have more out of the image than a regular color profile. The only thing I don't like is that this is a paid upgrade ($100) and its done in the most annoying way possible. You gotta buy a code printed on a piece of paper thats shipped to you... oye
But there is some good news for someone that doesn't necessarily want to learn about color grading LOG. The GH5 has a color profile called "HLG". This actually has very close to the same dynamic range of V-LOG L, and if you take some of these concepts I showed you hear with the waveform as well as taking a look at my test and findings. I would suggest you give that a try and see if you can preserve enough of what you want (Obviously not all of it without lighting)

Vectorscopes and Waveforms should be included in every camera that does video in a professional environment, heck I would pay $100.00 or more if every camera I bought had these. You would save so much time and your product would be so much better.

I generally have skins around 40-60. 30-60 works depending on the mood you are going for with shadows.
I don’t think the zooming in on the subject would help you finding out whether the subject is light up correctly or not because in most cases, the moment you start zooming in, the aperture would change which would cause your footage to look darker which might give you the results you want, but when you zoom out and your aperture becomes really wide, let’s say zoomed in, it was f5.6 and when you zoom out it’s, f1.8, those two different values will give you significantly different exposures for your subject.

Hey TLDR, apologies for the question but I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's wrong.
When I load footage from a GH5 into Da Vinci the Color Curves are tiny bumps rather than voluptuous mountains.
I can get them bigger if I over-exposure everything but a small part of the frame. But that's useless.
Shooting in broad daylight only gets them about 1/4 the height of the Color Curves section.
Tried Cine-D, HLG, and Natural. HLG was the worst but all were pretty bad.
Any idea why the color curves are so tiny? Simple adjustments like an S curve are impossible. Using a Color Space Trasformer doesn't help

The only thing I can think of is to make sure your davinci color management is correct in terms of what your input source is and what color space you want to work in. Everything other than HLG is a Rec709 source (sRGB) and the HLG would be rec2020. If these are all correct. In my opinion when looking at the curves mine don't show big mountains either. I don't think its really suppose to show it unless your entire image is comprised of on color. To me what you describe is normal so as long as when you look at your output preview it is exactly what you shot.

In the GH5 I believe waveform is only available in video mode. But yes, waveforms can be useful for photographers as well to judge exposure when using continuous lights.

I think your Ninja Inferno should have false color in the same menu where you can turn on and off the waveform and such. Most of Atomos's monitors from what I can remember have most of the basic monitoring features and just differ in terms of recording codec, size, and design...though I could be wrong, i've never gotten to use an Atomos product yet.

I mostly expose my shots by bringing everythig just before clipping, which is ok for a lot of shots but sometimes I would like to expose for middle grey. But where is middle grey on the wavefrom when using VLOGL, because not all of the waveform is used when in VLOGL?

In V-Log L for middle grey, I believe its one line under the middle bold line. That should be about 40%. I think V-Log L was like 41% or 42% for middle grey. I only just started shooting V-Log L and Slog3 on my cameras, I have no idea why I was so intimidated by it before, its been great using the technical 709 lut and then tweaking things. I still haven't dived into manually correcting a Log image from scratch.

Yes, the waveform will cover the 14 stops. To my understanding when it comes to stops of dynamic range to waveforms. The "range" on the waveform is still from 0-100 (for the sake of simplicity) and depending on the camera's ability whether it be 10 stops or 14 stops, it will divide up those stops within the 0-100 range. I know I'm really oversimplifying this analogy, but that's more or less how I understand it to work.

Correct, V-log when being acquired does not follow the rules of 0-100 on the waveform as it is compressing and flattening the information. I think its like 15-80? When you bring it into your editor and either manual grade or use a technical LUT, it will pull it to 100 if you are exposing your highlight to 80. So if you clip your highlights into 80, it will be clipped when you bring it into post editing.

You're most welcome.
Aperture is part of it, playing around with light positioning and intensity means if you bring the light closer or further away, or dim it etc.
Long story short, Shadows and highlights is not something you can directly set in the camera, you have to manipulate the lights in the shot to adjust where you want shadows and highlights to fall. I know me trying to describe it through text is not going to make a lot of sense, because at the same time, yes, you can change the scenes shadows and highlights by playing around with the ISO and shutter speed. But I would heavily advise you don't do that as you are learning from the beginning.
With your current setup, I would leave your camera at these settings.
Aperture - f/2.8
ISO - 400
Shutter 1/50th.
These are your basic settings and only the aperture should adjust when needed. From here begin to experiment with lights whether it be from the windows, flashlights, house lamps and see what they do to your face and the objects around you in the shoot. (Do you need to put the light closer or further back or put a piece of wax paper 2 feet in front of it?) As you learn to manipulate light, thats where the magic of filmmaking begins. Camera settings is not the quick way to learn how to make a fun shot.
My best advice is to look at one of your favorite movies of all time and favorite scene. Can you attempt to recreate the lighting of that scene? This is the fastest way to learn, trying and experimenting to see what results happen.
By the time you've played around with lights for one week, my tutorial would no longer be relevant to your skill level :)
Give it a go, try anything and everything and see what your camera sees, and of course have fun! I'll see you in the next one!

I believe that is correct, that if your GH5 is set to shutter angle mode that it will automatically double and you don't have to worry about manually changing the shutter speed. I personally do not go this route for no other reason than I learned with photography shutter calculations. Also I'm not sure if other cameras out there allow this mode like the GH5 does, I'm sure they all will at some point, but for now all the cameras can operate with photography shutter modes.

Unfortunately I do not know specifically what a standard Beauty/Glamor shots waveform would look like as there are many different styles that I can think of in my head. A glamor shot, in my mind, would have a waveform that's more flat and not harsh with shadows, everything is bright and glowy, so the waveform most likely won't have spikes.
If I'm thinking of something id see in a high fashion shoot that's moody, there would be more contrast between the models face and their shadow areas, all with soft transition in the shadows, nothing harsh. So the waveform in this example would have some hill like spike points here and there.
The best way to learn is to take any digital photograph or videos you have and put them into your video editing program. From there turn on the waveform monitor in your editing program and look at what the values are. From there you can mimic the same lighting by trying to achieve the same waveform values.

Unfortunately I do not know for sure, I can't remember which lens Caleb Pike used with his initial GH5s reviews @DSLRvideoshooter. But he noticed that the GH5s seems to be sampling a larger size of the sensor than the GH5. So there might be some vignetting that will appear. However a lot of people use this combo with the their GH5s and I don't really hear much complaining when it comes to video work.

I unfortunately don't have a GH5s...yet, I'll definitely be adding it to my kid (Pending performances of the BMPCC 4k) I think the GH5 and GH5s are an insane pairing for just about every shooting condition.
Definitely let me know when you've posted some tests. For me I'm one of the few that are not bothered by the noise grain in the shadows because of how much contrast I generally have in my shots. However I totally get it if you're going for a dim feel in a scene and you suddenly don't have the contrast to offset the eyes.

I'm not as familiar with the term "rotated" histogram, but I get what you're saying. You are correct, from left to right on the waveform is a depiction of your video from frame left to right, giving you the ability to see what could be too bright and too dark. I say "could be" because there is another exposure tool out there that is even better (in my opinion) to see how you're exposing your scene. Its called, "false color" it hasn't really found its way into consumer camera's just yet, but is widely available to use on cheap external monitors. That tool takes the guessing game out of what you're seeing on a waveform.

when you mention that your highest is 90%... are you using V-Log L for that or the other picture style? cause afaik the VLog-L profile will cap the highlight reported to 80 percent, even my zebras gets capped to 80 when i use VLog L
80 in V-Log is equivalent to 100 in non-Log, so when you switch to V-Log you'll see the waveform shift downwards. Beyond 80 and it's clipping- no info retained.
i see so as i have read also... whenever i shoot and my priority is skin t ones, how low of an IRE you would go to retain those highlights?
typically i expose the skin around 50-60 IRE

I use the Natural profile when I referenced the 90%. I unfortunately did not purchase the V-Log L activation key, not sure if I will in the near future. One thing i'd be interested to know is when you have V-log assist turned on to either a Rec. 709 or a custom LUT, if the waveform will report back the full IRE range or still only report up to 80.
In terms of trying to retain highlights while keeping skintones in a nice mid gray area on the waveform. This will heavily depend on your ability to light or modify available light in your scene. For documentary run and gun it may be difficult, but for lit productions you'll just have to make sure you can light your talent bright enough to even it out against the brightest part of your scene.

For me, personally, I prefer the Waveform over Zebras because I can see what the entire image is more or less doing. With Zebra's you have to select a certain IRE point and only when you reach that IRE is when the Zebras will show. Zebras are definitely a great quick tool to see if you're about to overexpose and you can make quick adjustments on the fly to lower exposure to get rid of the Zebras to know you're not over exposed.

I was looking for a used GH5 or GH5s to up my video making game (I make music production tutorials), so I was looking for all the information I could find to choose the camera to buy.
I finally got a used GH5 :)
Ahhh that makes sense, I have to admit that I am still learning everyday about sound in general. I know enough, but am always constantly tinkering with plug-in settings and seeing what works. This video was year #1 on youtube so my sound mix was all over the place!
I'm so happy to hear you were able to locate a used GH5. Honestly to this day the GH5 is still one heck of a workhorse camera for its quality and abilities. It may not be the vloggers tool of choice, but for everyone else it does an insane amount.
In terms of lenses there are some great Native options that are small, compact, and just makes the whole experience fun when you add the smartphone app ability. I personally use the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 as my stand working lens, and then I purchased the Panasonic 20mm f1.7, 25mm f1.7, and 42.5 f1.7 for most special shots. Those primes are tiny and makes it easy for me to pack up and go.
You will see a lot of references to the Sigma 18-35 with adapters, which I do own and use, however its a large lens and I feel it only really excels for filmmakers that are doing narrative story telling. With your music production tutorials you probably only need the Olympus 12-40 and that will cover you for all your needs.
Keep your ISO at 400 if you can, I film in the natural profile as it feels the most pleasing without needing to color grade. If you dial in your lighting, even with colors if you are using them, I don't feel theres any major reason to film in 10bit for youtube. 8 bit with dialed in colors and exposure is just fine. And thats about it that I can think of to get you going with your GH5!
Question: Do you by any chance have a video on how to best mix your karaoke vocals to a karaoke track? This has been hard for me to find a definitive answer early on. Over the years I realize that a compressor definitely helped keeping my vocals in a better dynamic range for the songs I sing. Playing with reverb and echo to match the song a little bit better. Where I run into trouble is making my voice pop out and not get lost. I've started playing with a "Stereo Spreader" plugin and moving certain frequency through out the space, it's sounding better but definitely doesn't sound like a produced track. If you got a video on how that works, awesome!

I am tempted to record 10-bit footage and try some crazy color tweaks, but I'm gonna start out with basic 8-bit thing and slowly discover all the options. I also work as a general visual artist, so I love playing with possibilities, doing some silly effects in my videos.
As for mixing voice for music:
A compressor is a must - you need to make sure the voice is more or less in similar loudness all the time so you can make sure it's audible above the music all the time. If it doesn't cut through, you can help it by reducing some mids/lower highs (500 Hz - 3 kHz) in the backing track to make room for the voice. You can also boost 1-3 kHz range a little bit in your vocal to give it more presencse, be careful not to over do it. Also - I always use a de-esser after the compressor to reduce sibilants - these often are painful to listen to and will be the first thing that sounds bad when you make your voice louder in the mix.
A bit or reverb and delay can go a long way afterwards to give the vocal track some extra musicality, though that heavily depends on the style of music you're working with.
I've done an exhaustive tutorial about producing voice overs, but not vocals for songs, gotta make that up sometime :)

Ah gotcha, in terms of making money with youtube I would suggest checking out @videoinfluencers and @thinkmediaTV , both channels are great and filled with valuable information on what to do when building your channel as well as where you can make money from it.
As far as making ads and filming stuff for companies. That is something that comes with practice and knowing what you enjoy filming. For example, I have all the gear and knowledge to film a wedding, but I don't enjoy filming weddings because it's not what I'm passionate about. So I would see if you have any friends that have small or start up businesses and see if they have something cool to offer that you can capture on video for them and edit something together. I would study other companies social media videos (basic ones) and see which one you can replicate at this current time. Create a few for free to practice and also to get your name out and eventually you will have your own style of video that you can show potential clients in the future.
In the end I don't have as much experience in this field, I have shot my fair share of small videos for companies but they were all very corporate and not creatively stimulating for me. But if this is something you want to go into, its really just doing a few for free to prove you can do it and then as you grow your skill set, you can begin reaching out to clients and show them your work and let them know how hiring you can be beneficial for them. In the end its all about selling yourself and what you have to offer, similar to how camera companies sell themselves to us.
