They look a bit like a classic but with all the reliability and longevity as a Japanese car of that era. Fun fact with them being based on the Micra they share the same oil filter as the R33 GTR!
When I met my wife, she knew nothing about cars. She appreciated that I did and when her Rover 25 died, I suggested that we get her something she could enjoy owning and driving on her terms, so she went for a Fig. She's still her own kind of petrol head after a succession of Smarts and I love that.
I'm pretty sure these are so popular in the UK simply because of the retro styling. I think Nissan did a convincing job too - it's quite timeless considering they're 30 years old, a classic in it's own right!
You’ve got to consider the time period as well when these were released. There were a lot of very dull grey looking boxes in the early ‘90s. Nissan tried really hard with the Figaro and it is evocative of 50s French & Italian small cars. Like you say it’s timeless reliable and cheap to run. The rub is the lack of parts availability as Jonny Smith attests to with his!
Never a fan, but at the same time, the Figaro is very cool and a throw back to when some manufacturers would take a chance or offer a niche car. That's a rarity these days for any volume manufacturer, and that's a shame.
The US has introduced new legislation which permits low-volume car manufacturing, where barriers such as safety regulations don't apply. DeLorean is one of the first to take advantage of this to restart production, and hopefully more cool cars to come.
For those who cannot read Japanese the little card says: Precautions when using a vehicle with a turbocharger Change the engine oil every 10,000km for SG class or every year, for SD, SE, SF class 5000km or every 6 months The best oil is Nissan Genuine motor oil "Turbo X" (SG class). Loving these videos of more down to earth, affordable machinery. Great work as always. I think the appeal of these cars is their retro modern cuteness coupled to the option of open air gentle cruising.
Made my first cross-country drive in months at the weekend and saw a Figaro. Of all the notable cars I saw on the drive, the Figaro stood out most as it was the only one to make me smile. I don't think I'm the right person to own one, but I'm glad of those people who are and do.
Keep getting your hands on all sorts of cars like this, it is so interesting to see what layout the cars have, and go for a test drive with you, in some cars we will never see or be able to afford. When you review a car, I go and see if I can find one for sale, also if I am looking at a car I look to see if you have looked at one. Thanks for the content, and I'm sure you enjoy this as much as, if not more, than us watching this. Enjoy.
Interesting that you had the view that this car was more of a fashion accessory than anything else. I would wager that the average Figaro spends more of its life zipping about country lanes than the average supercar does.
You know, its funny - when the figaro came out, I thought the same as you - it was a 'fake classic' - a modern car designed to look like a much older one. Now of course they're solidly thirty years old and I guess that makes 'em genuine classic cars! Not my bag at all, I have no desire to ever own one, but I do appreciate what Nissan did, and although I don't share the enthusiasm of Figaro fans, I do understand it!
James, you mentioned that it was designed for someone a bit smaller than yourself. I'm 6'4" and would deal with it because it's so unique and charming. Mind you I have fit in a Cappuccino before so I'm not unaccustomed to suffering for my love of small cars lol.
The best this is you just smile when you drive it, and the people you pass often smile and turn to watch. It’s just a beautiful car to look at and a pleasure to drive.
Weirdly, this is a "one that got away" cars for me... I had a friend who's girlfriend was selling one, in that colour, here in Australia. I could've got it for 15k Australian micro pesos, but didn't think it was wise and passed. Considering the classic car dealership near my house has a yellow one for 55k, I should've listened to my wife and bought it for her. She wanted it bad. She must NEVER see this video.
I don't even drive, but this is my dream car and someday when I maybe do drive, I want one so bad mainly just because how damn cute they look. I know it's hard to find one in a good condition, but it'd still be worth it to me, someone local to me has a pink one that she drives about and I get so jealous!

Same with the Daihatsu Copen, which one might argue to be the descendant of the Figaro, which wasn't as appreciated as it should have by car enthusiasts, probably because it didn't sport any muscle in its looks. In Japan they don't care as much about reputation and looking serious to others as we do, and the fact many of their best cars look really cute and expressive is proof of that. Daihatsu sold the Copen in EU with their usual 1.3L but retired altogether from the continent in '14, just in time before the new Copen was released. My missus has a Daihatsu Copen. I'm just a smidge under 6' 2" and I drive it. If I'm at a set of lights and almost any other car pulls up next to me, it's the Copen that gets the looks and the smiles. Especially from the ladies. 12 years ago I bought my japanese import E36 from a uk dealer who had a figaro also in the showroom. He'd had it ages and said it might sell eventually. How times change.
When we decided to get a second car, my wife said she would like a TT or a pink Figaro. Obviously, we went for the TT! It went last year and we are now saving and deciding what to get next... hmmm. Still can't see myself driving a pink one!

As for the suspension it is unforgiving if you do not replace it, so on your model that must have been the case, but it should be otherwise very confortable.
It's a very sweet looking little car especially in that colour and I think they can probably tour quite well I was saw one with British numberplates touring In the hills above Malaga.
Bought one three years ago because I love the shape, and thought it would be rubbish to drive, but it's actually really good. Up in the high revs it is rather quick, due to the turbo, but it IS slow in low revving city traffic. Made a video with it last year on my YT channel also. Economy is rather bad, compared to a regular small Japanese car, due to small wheels, high revving engine (4000 RPM at 100 km/h), turbo and the wasteful automatic transmission. So it drinks gasoline like a medium sized car from the seventies. But it is always a lot of fun to drive, so that doesn't really matter. And I know the feeling, you are trying to describe. Would also consider myself a petrolhead with a 356 and a Citroën DS among my other cars. Gave one of my cruising friends in an E-type quite a surprise earlier this year, when suddenly I floored it and kickdowned past him in the Fig on one of our trips 😎

Nope, nope. You cannot describe something as a "ferret hammock" without providing an accompanying visual of a ferret enjoying said hammock... unless of course that was a euphemism, in which case - as you were.

Call e crazy, but I think these are old world elegant. I believe these do come with an SR20DET or are swappable which is what I would go with with some suspension goodies to make a somewhat corner competent elegant machine
This is absolutely the case! The original meaning for the colours was gemstones, but almost everyone knows that it’s seasons / so that’s why we went with it 😁
i do lke this car that started the retro- design aera in cras. But i would still rather go to the original: The German "Guthbrod Superior" from the 1950s btw. the first serial car with direct fuel injection in the world... go take a look at it.
JP regulations: totally true. When I bought my Alfa, I had to prove that I had a parking spot within 2km. I noted down my in-laws house. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.
There’s a very small amount of younger women who buy them, who happen to know a lot about cars (hi!) 😁 I do agree - most people who buy them are middle aged women who don’t have a clue 🤣
I would buy one if I had the extra space and money, they look just awesome and just plain fun, and you dont get much more *speed* nutter vehicle enthusiast than me, believe me. New experiences are the spice of life. Not a middle aged woman last time I checked either.

Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile. The same "seashell" motiff is on the hood ornament.
Not sea shells
My Daughter absolutely loves these! If it was manual and had space in the back for her mates she would have bought one.
There is enough space in the back and some have been converted to manual
Call e crazy, but I think these are old world elegant. I believe these do come with an SR20DET or are swappable which is what I would go with with some suspension goodies to make a somewhat corner competent elegant machine
AC and CD player optional? Huh? I thought they were all pretty much the same with the options being dealer installed.
We have one and it purrs along at 65/70 😊 ... oh, and a recent translation revealed the colours originated in gem stones, not the seasons 😉
This is absolutely the case! The original meaning for the colours was gemstones, but almost everyone knows that it’s seasons / so that’s why we went with it 😁
I’m so looking forward to you reviewing the New Ami Car 🚗
It’s lovely!
i do lke this car that started the retro- design aera in cras. But i would still rather go to the original: The German "Guthbrod Superior" from the 1950s btw. the first serial car with direct fuel injection in the world... go take a look at it.
thanks
Heaps in New Zealand
a pity these are getting so expensive
JP regulations: totally true. When I bought my Alfa, I had to prove that I had a parking spot within 2km. I noted down my in-laws house. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.
You were right, bought by middle aged women who don't have a clue about cars. Still kind of respect it, its just different from all the SUVs of today.
