That was bloody BRILLIANT! Nobody seems to have any love for late 80s watches and i remember at school there were 2 distinct camps - the nerds wearing Casios, or the cool kids wearing the new fangled Swatch. I was in the nerd camp and my databank calculator watch is STILL my essential watch when on holiday. Got all my phone numbers, time zones, alarms, exchange rates etc. I could literally lose my phone and still survive! Gotta love old casios.
They all had their time and place. Todays kids will have no real memories of watches other than a smart one which is a tragedy. I have done a few Casio videos now and my most successful one was of a Casio melody alarm watch. I think it did well purely on nostalgia.
My 80s nerd watch had 12 melodies, but some douche nicked it during a PE lesson (I'm still feeling the emotion!) :-( I find a countdown timer is still really handy to have on your wrist. :-)
Casio Databanks here also.. Along with watches that were both analogue and digital and then a few that had digital hands also. Looking for some modern equivalents, I don't fancy scraping 30 years of someones skin cells out of a used one.
DTMF tones are still used in the legacy telephone system, and are also used in certain amateur radio applications. And yeah, that's nostalgic, for sure!
Such a great time travel! We are at the same age, I remember this tone dial thing very well. You made a huge smile in my face with this video. Thanks!!
This will work on any phone that has a dial tone (so won't work from a mobile). On very old phones you can hear the dial tone when you lift the hand set. On modern phones (like the one in your office) you will need to press '0' on the key pad then activate the watch. When storing the phone numbers in the watch drop the '0'. This will work and can call mobile phones...but only if your phone has a dial tone. Hope that makes sense.
No my office phone has a dial tone when lifting off the base. Its because its a new digital BT line over internet rather than the old way. We as a business have been forced to go that way believe it or not. Was not a choice.
Never mind Mike. You'll have to keep your eyes peeled for old style phones when you visit your relatives ect & ask if it's OK to use their phone. Its amazing when it works.
You can store a lot of numbers on it plus a whole memo system with appointments, tasks etc. In its day all would have been very useful until we went digital which changed every aspect of technology.
This last week I refurbished an early 80's Pulsar diver, new crystal, tidying up the dial and hands, polished the case and hot water dipped the Seiko plastic strap and man it looks like new. I am going to sort out a new facebook account and just use it for the group as I am missing you lot so much lol Been regulating a 1950's Kienzle pocket watch tonite, running a touch fast but nailed it spot on and doing a resto on a quite nice Seiko 7009, chapter ring was snapped and the date window surround was loose so been using my GS cement to affix them both on and giving the case, cavity, Seiko Japan original bracelet a thorough clean and putting it all back together tomorrow and another Seiko salvaged :D
Sounds like you are doing some good work there. Yes please just set up a dummy account on FB for groups. I recommend this to people who want to avoid the app. You can add as much or as little on a profile as you want. No one will see it unless you add friends anyway. One note please put a picture on your account , can be of a watch. Just when we admin the group if an account looks too bland we can mistake it for a "bot "account (trust me there are plenty) There are a few very easy join questions to answer and that is for us to know you are a human being on the other end!
I have a few Casiotron which are the first Casios made. Nice solid watches that are a contrast to resin ones like this in the video, 70s Digitals I am always keeping my eyes peeled for. The early stuff being cutting edge at the time meant they were solid in their construction.
Great follow on video, I watched this follow-on after watching the earlier one. Be great to see some more vintage LCD Casio and Seiko 80s/90s restorations like this!
Never had a phone dial Casio only had the databank which used to store 50 wow telephone numbers and names. I think that was it. Never give up. Well done Mike. I am sure it would work perfect on a bt landlines into the wall but not many of us still have one.
Thats fantastic. I used to have a thing the size of a small calculator that you would open up and could enter all kinds into it. Probably still have it in the attic somewhere.
Great old Casio! I believe the brown debris in the speaker is disintegrated sponge type foam, a sort of diffuser like the foam found on old Walkman style headphones.
I remember the old days (1989/1990). I bought a Panasonic answering machine. You could call it from another phone sending your code via a little device in order to listen to recorded messages. I bought that watch and you can imagine people's faces when they saw someone calling from the phone box placing his watch on the handset.
i used to have that watch ; the phone cabins in france you could dial up with the dtmf function and not have to pay ; they only locked the dialer not the tonality ; so that was literaly my first 'hack' ; i must have been around 12 or 13 when i had it in the late 80s real early 90s ... loved it
Not sure if it's that you're in an area that's updated or just that you're using VOIP, but there are still standard touchtone phones around. More specifically at my parent's house.
Can't remember the brand, but I used to have a watch that worked as a universal TV remote. The fun I used to have in classes where the teacher rolled out the TV!
I remember Casio having one and then a few cheap knock off versions. I had one recently in a job lot but desoldered all the caps off it as I needed them on another project.
That's awesome that you were able to find the speaker for it. I enjoyed your restoration of the two Casio watches, even though I never cared for Casio brand, it was still a good video. 👍👍 Edit: for Electronics like this and cleaning 91% to 99% Rubbing/Isopropyl Alcohol is what you want to use to clean it as it won't harm the parts in anyway and evaporates without a trace. 👌
Thanks, I do clean boards etc in 99% IPA but this speaker I didnt want to risk in the ultrasonic with the wire bonds to the speaker being so thin. Once having the donor I don't want to break it. Hence cleaning it the hard way. Pleased you can appreciate videos like this one. thanks
Those are the DTMF frequencies. Payphones, and alanloge Landlines did work well with them. I "cracked" a Payphone in the early days when I got a similar device, and dialed a number that way. Just a month later, the payphone was replaced with a newer type which did not do that anymore. Seems the telco company got hold of it. 😞 PTT was it back then.

Started looking for watches from the 80's where they started making them more than just a watch. I had several Casio Databanks and actually used to store phone numbers in the watch. Noticed the modern ones currently on sale have a smaller screen. where is the alarm this week and next week display?
I can remember this audio tone dialling technology from the 90s unfortunately I can't remember the device I used to do it but I definitely used it. I used to have a Psion organiser could that have been it?
Just got one in great condition after years of searching! Love this watch. Do you know how to reset the code? I accidentally set a new code and I can't remember what I set! I'm guessing removing the battery would reset it?
Would have been good having one of these back in the 80s early 90s to get Free phone calls from payphones. Lots of friends used the DTMF chips you could buy at the time to bypass the telephone exchange charge system using DTMF tones down the microphone on the handset. Really good when it used to cost £1 for 10 seconds to New Zealand from UK.😂😂😂
I thought was a great video! It has inspired to give a quartz movement a go actually. As a side note, my first Digital watch was likely in the late 70’s - that being a red LED Trafalgar. I was actually searching for one recently. It frustrated me even as a kid because I had to ride no-handed on my bike just to see the time… so I shot it with my air rifle 😂
I have a few Trafalgar LED, Love them. They come up often on eBay but most are not running and its a 50/50 if they will with a clean. Often the battery has been in there since the 80s and ruined everything.
@@MyRetroWatches Still waiting. I've got today's emails, but none of my back record of receipts, statements, etc! I can see it is there, occupying 239 MB of my 25 GB, but I can't access it - waiting to hear from Virgin, but they say it might take 28 days!!! AARGH!
back in those days I could remember phone numbers as we had do manually dial them. In todays world if I now lost my phone I could only call my work or at a push my wife. Oh how times have changed.
Mike, your video has been very enjoyable and terrifying at the same time. I feel good and disgusted at the end. What a feeling, hahahahaha! Keep up the great work on the videos. Best regards

Loved the video! The sound brings back a lot of good memories from my childhood as well! Thank you for sharing!!

Yes wonderful to see and hear it again, there was remote control Casio and data Bank with running Matrix memo on top etc etc thank you 🙏🏼

Never understood what this watch does, very nice demonstration, totally get it now. I bet It was a pretty cool feature in the '90.
