Nosferatu (2024): A Visually Stunning Drag That Lacks Bite

  • I went into Nosferatu with cautious optimism, hoping Robert Eggers’ remake of the 1922 classic would finally deliver a serious and compelling vampire film. Unfortunately, much like his previous works, this one didn’t resonate with me. While the movie is visually stunning and drenched in atmosphere, it ultimately feels like a chore to sit through, bogged down by a thin narrative and pacing that borders on tedious.
There are flashes of brilliance-Bill Skarsgård delivers an undeniably unsettling performance as Count Orlok. Yet even these high points couldn’t rescue the film from feeling hollow. The story meanders, lingering too long in sequences that add little to the overall arc. Despite the strong ensemble cast, including Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe, the characters are frustratingly one-dimensional, making it hard to connect with their struggles or care about their fates.
Eggers’ bold narrative choices, seemingly intended to shock, often feel hollow rather than impactful. While his distinct style shines through, it once again leans too heavily on aesthetics at the expense of storytelling. If The Witch or The Lighthouse didn’t work for you, this likely won’t either.
To its credit, Nosferatu is a showcase of incredible craftsmanship-a visual and atmospheric triumph. But as a cohesive narrative, it falls short. For me, it was another beautiful yet emotionally distant experience.

I love it. I think there is no other film that captures the decadence and dramatics of gothic literature better than this one since Hunger and Interview With the Vampire.
Love the Count Orlok design, I’ve been waiting to see a proper Eastern European look of the vampire.

Thanks for sharing. Glad you like it. I know many others do too, and I'm glad ultimately for Robert Eggers even if I don't resonate with him as much. I still want to see him succeed.

Why do people criticize the plot of the movie when the plot was created in the original 1920s film of which this is a remake?

@@ericswidler8743 who says they don't or wouldn't have the same issue with that version. Also, a remake allows one to improve upon things such as that.

Totally agree with you, I wanted to love this so much, I'm a huge Eggers fan. I think beyond the pacing and self-seriousness of it all I think Count Orlock just didn't work for me, i didn't buy him at all and so the movie started to fall apart for me once he's introduced. He was over the top, I would've preferred a far more nuanced performance that helped me understand his connection to Mina and vice-versa. Missed opportunity.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective and making me feel less insane for not loving the movie. I get that it's drawing from the original (and Dracula by extension) but if the movie is ultimately about Ellen, I never felt that she WAS the main character.
