I grew up on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. Our family was Catholic. Now many have fallen away from that and have turned to Native Culture, but those who remain are mixing the faith with Native Culture practices. Smudging, sweats, burning sage, putting bundles of sage in their cars and in the corners of the rooms in their homes, offering of tobacco, etc. etc. I never grew up doing that, but I did like to go to Pow Wows for entertainment purposes more or less. I think it’s a beautiful part of the Native Culture, but I know by being a born again spirit filled Christian that we no longer need to do all that other stuff because Jesus paid it all and there is nothing more to do than to just accept His Redeeming sacrifice as He said “It is Finished”! I grew up on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. Our family was Catholic. Now many have fallen away from that and have turned to Native Culture, but those who remain are mixing the faith with Native Culture practices. Smudging, sweats, burning sage, putting bundles of sage in their cars and in the corners of the rooms in their homes, offering of tobacco, etc. etc. I never grew up doing that, but I did like to go to Pow Wows for entertainment purposes more or less. I think it’s a beautiful part of the Native Culture, but I know by being a born again spirit filled Christian that we no longer need to do all that other stuff because Jesus paid it all and there is nothing more to do than to just accept His Redeeming sacrifice as He said “It is Finished”! Jesus' first disciples weren't white Europeans but 1st century Jews and Christianity has never been uniquely located in Europe. Europe remained pagan for centuries after the death of the last Apostle and it's conversion didn't happen over night.
