blueberry plants are some of the most expensive fruit seedlings in Kenya today.
Our limited experience suggests that the crop can be grown and of course many people in Kenya have shown that fruit of quality can be grown. Indeed, several have tested the market and received very satisfactory prices.
Because blueberries have very specific growth requirements particularly in relation to soil composition, it will mean inevitably that the crop will be grown where these conditions can be met and maintained at relatively low cost.

Within each species, there are many cultivars or varieties. Blueberry cultivars are chosen based on production area temperature and the chilling requirements of different species.
Chilling is the accumulated number of hours between 32˚ and 45˚F necessary for flower buds to develop on a dormant plant. Rabbit-eye and highbush plants require fewer chilling hours to produce fruit and are well adapted to Kenya's moderate climate. Lowbush species are native wild blueberry plants; however, they are still managed intensively with production techniques.
Highbush and lowbush species are the most common species grown for commercial production.
Blueberries are very exacting in their soil requirements and this is particularly true' for Highbush cultivars that we sell.
They require a well drained acid soil that has a fairly high content of organic matter. Peatlands are the preferred soils as they are composed almost completely of organic matter and have the desirable pH level (acidity) of from 4.5 to 4.8.
Any soil with pH above 5 must be corrected before planting.
Where it is necessary to lower the pH the following table gives a guide as to the amount of sulphur that will be required:
