Nothing is better when the players come up with a solution to a puzzle that just didn't occur to you when you created it!

That is one of the funnest parts about putting a challenge like these in front of your players! They Never do what u think they will. lol

Really loved how @WallyDM summarized puzzles. They're a great link between players and the environment, and solving them can be amazing memorable moments for the group. Including "easy" puzzles is also a great tip 👍

I like Puzzles as an easier way to get past an obstacle. I don't want it to be the only way past the obstacle. I like to let the party be able to brute force their way past the obstacle if they can't or don't want to be bothered with the puzzle.
Something fun and interesting and often with a bit of a reward implicit/inside the puzzle is good.
I love Wally DMs first book and am looking forward to the second one.
A couple of his puzzles have actually expanded into mini-adventures for me.

I'm Mark's youngest sister and don't know anything about D&D, but love watching the videos! They're very intriguing. Maybe.... just may-beee my interest and curiosity will lead me to diving into this mysterious game. Hahaha

When and where can we see @WallyDM actually DM a game?

  • @frankyfraaank

DMing my first campaign and totally used Raiders of the Lost Ark as inspiration for a large portion of the game. The reveal of the traps in those opening scenes were so cleverly done.
“Stay here.” “...if you insist senior.” Lol
I also used the “burning down bar fight” for an encounter and the “lost city” motif.
Those movies are idea goldmines. Just add magic.

I like to put in puzzles that have a use. I like to ask why would a builder put w puzzle here and what type.

My first d&d game the dm gave the 5 of us a puzzle box asking us to alight the contents by value. We didn't ask what 'value' ment and spent an hour locked in a library trying to figure out the value of items. Needless to say after an hour of utter cluelessness I smashed the box and then rolled a Nat 20 and smashed the door down.. wisdom test fail, strength test made.

6:22 What movie is this from?
    EDIT: Found it. Idiocracy.
The only problem I have with Intelligence checks is players who are like "I keep rolling Int checks until you TELL ME the answer." *proceeds to roll 20d20 plus Int mod*

I very much dislike puzzles because I don't see someone building a defense system that cannot hold back clever people

    • @person9164
      @person9164 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It could be as simple as a passworded door.
Only the creator "should" be able to open it, but that's where the players start finding clever ways to subvert.
Either by finding the password, finding a way around the password, or even around the door itself.
