But all efforts to dig stopped all of a sudden. There must be something very scary down there. Come with us as we reveal the shocking finding that caused producers to immediately stop season 12. In 1862, a group called the Onslow Company went to Oak Island to look for treasure. The story is interesting and full of shocks. After digging deep into the island, they ran into a big problem about 80 to 90 feet down: water started to fill up their hole, which meant they couldn't dig any further. A lot of questions and ideas came up because of this.
Many people believed that tunnels were built from the sea to the dig site. They thought that the tunnels were filled with water on purpose to protect whatever was inside. What was found under the beach at Smith's Cove on the island in 1851 made this idea seem even more likely. It was found to have coconut strands, which don't normally grow in that area. Many people thought that someone had dug a tunnel so that seawater could flow into the pit and protect the wealth that was hidden there.
