This is a live performance, far more difficult than recording in a studio. Her hands and gestures enhance the performance greatly, much like Maria Callas's acting and really, Dusty belongs alongside her in her ability to feel and inhabit the music. Her hair style ( aided by at least two top quality falls ) and gown are the very best. She had been a top performing star for several years now and I get the feeling in this film that she is in trouble somehow.
I totally agree. It seems to be under rehearsed. It goes from the timid question straight into a booming response without any time to build. And the masses of percussion are too much. But her voice comes through as always, and I think it's better than David Cassidy's version.

In terms of getting the feeling "she is in trouble somehow" we now know that she was extremely reluctant to embrace fame, had crippling insecurities about her own gifts, and suffered deep psychological trauma, partly based on her sexuality. You are basically seeing into her soul, which is why she (and iconic artists like Judy Garland) were (and still are) so warmly and wholly embraced by fans who are lucky enough to be on board. The pain brings the art - the agony and the ecstasy.

I should have included Streisand in the way that hands are used as a means of enhancing the performance. And you are certainly right about depth of character supercharging a performance, otherwise it would be flat.
As much as I like Dusty, I have to say that I still prefer the Rascals original version. I even like the vocals by the Rascals better. Just my opinion.
