I have been an instructional designer for over 12 years and have worked from home since 6 years ago. I love this style of life, sometimes I wonder if it is time to change and work in another area of education; but in the other side, as an instructional designer, I learn a lot, and I have enough time to work with different projects around the world, so, enjoy this process.

Did your company train you prior to starting? How many hours per day/per week do you typically work? Are you an independent contractor and is the pay worth it? How does the compensation compare to teaching?

I'm looking at transitioning from higher ed to instructional design. I know that crafting your resume is a huge part of pivoting, but I was wondering what additional knowledge and skills you had to develop and how you acquired them? It sounds like you started on freelance sites. What kind of projects did you do at the beginning and how did you know you were ready/qualified to start advertising your services?

Hey Kristin, I have been getting this question on a few of my videos, I think this week I will make a video about how I got started!

Thank you for your video! I’ve been transitioning out of teaching for about 4 months now and I am having a hard time marketing myself to get a job like yours! Your job seems like something that is easily transferable from teaching! Do you have any advice on how to get my foot in the door?

Thanks Tricia! I did a lot of research about how to highlight my skills on a resume. I also suggest looking on sites like upwork and fiver to look for small freelancing jobs that can help build you experience and skillset! I am currently working full time with a company that I originally found on upwork. It definitely takes time, but it IS achievable if you keep working for it!!

I have been having a hard time finding another career after my teaching job of nearly 7 years. I'm stuck on what jobs to apply for. Ideally something remote or hybrid for a company that offers health benefits and retirement. Any ideas? Your content is great!

Thank you for sharing. I've an LMS Administrator and would like to get in to Instructional Design. I'm finding alot of LMS Admin positions now require dual roles.

Yep, the feast or famine is for real. I also work from home as an ID but jump on the chance to go to the office. Today a bunch of us were in the studio recording voice overs for some of our projects so that was a nice change of pace. Nice video!

How did you get started? Do you work with or for a company? I just resigned teaching after 9 years. I'm really wanting to do something like this at home, but don't know where to start.

Does the instructional designer have to learn about a whole process before making the materials? E.g. if I were to teaching a class about who the vikings were, I’d have to research this and get my head around it before making a teaching PowerPoint.

Yes, it is similar. We work with subject matter experts to give us the information that we need, but oftentimes they are not educators. So we work together to work on objectives and find the best way to present the information.

If you can share with more insights with a role of an ID, may be with an example of yours or someone from the industry it'll be much appreciated and more clear view towards the path. Thanks in advance!!
