    To get referred make your resume based off the job description and requirements. I did that and in past month got 2 job interviews and one Tentative job offer. Both from VA.

    Thank you for this! I was referred 3 days after applying for a Info Tech role. I have experience and education and DOD qualifying certs but I didn’t submit a gov resume just a basic 2 page one. I wish I had bc now I may not get an interview bc of it. I plan to do it tonight and reapply for all the other roles still open! How long does it usually take to get an interview after referral?

      It was direct hire so maybe they have better needs

      Usually when people get referred they are called for interview in a week or 2.

      Direct hire would likely show a need but opens the pool to the most candidates.

    Received first interview and was given next steps for second interview, but have yet to receive one, Receiving a “referred” email after having a first interview and patiently hoping for a second interview is so confusing.

      Congrats on the interviews! Yea, there isn't a new notice for second interviews. It is confusing because the interviews are conducted by the hiring manager and the notices are sent by HR. Sometimes they get out of sync.

    What's the average timeline between referred and interview?

      It's supposed to be 14 days but is often delayed. It's up to the hiring manager to schedule.

      @@boldnbrash7028 not everyone that is referred gets an interview. Scheduling should have at least started in a month. You can always check on the status with the HR POC from the announcement.

      Sounds like either being reviewed for qualifications or referred for possible interview.

    If hiring manager recommends a candidate to HR after taking interviews, then what's the chance of getting the job? Can HR deny the recommendation of the hiring manager or hiring manager retract the recommendation?

      The hiring manager makes the selection. HR will do a final review to make sure someone is qualified. There could be a situation where the hiring manager changes their mind but it would probably be for a bad reference or something.

    How long I have to wait to apply again to the same position? Haven’t rescinded but if they can’t change me the tour of duty, unfortunately, I will do it. I’m thinking about applying again but choosing I’m available only day shift.

    Can we just reply to the e-mail from USAstaffing if we want to get more information about why we were not referred if we think we should have been? Or what’s the best way to contact the HR specialist who sent the notice of referral? Thanks 😊

      You should be able to reply to the email even though it looks automated. There also should be their name and contact info at the bottom of the announcement.

      Once you are referred only what was submitted is sent to the hiring manager. Can't add to your application after the announcement closes in most cases.

    Status went from referred, had the interview and now it says application reviewed. Still waiting to hear back from the interview. Is that normal to go to application reviewed after showing referred?

      It can be normal. The notifications update based on the notices sent by HR. Sometimes the conflict.

    Hi there, first-thanks so much for all the knowledge you share here. It's been so helpful.
    I have finally received a TJO not for one but two positions under two separate agencies: the IRS as a direct hire remote GS 5 step 1 position to which I've already accepted, provided fingerprinting and ID docs and picture. I am now completing the forms for the background check. Moreover, i've also received a call and email today for TJO for the VA which is the one I have been loooong hoping to get and interviewed for; as a good student I've accepted and plan on negotiating up the steps from a GS 6 step 1 as I have over 8yrs of experience as an advanced medical support assistant.
    Questions:
    1. How do you see my plan to negotiate a step 10 with the VA, Orange County-Orlando.
    2. I am also wondering if agencies software inter-communicate or a linked within each other and if it can affect me in anyway? Am I able to move forward with both agencies' background checks and decide for one later on? is there such thing as having two federal positions?
    Please help!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH.

      You're welcome! So, with 8 years of experience you are probably closer to step 6 or 7 unless you currently make more than that. AMSAs turnover alot so it's possible. I'd say ask for what you want and see what happens. The systems don't talk except for eqip. They'll be able to see you did fingerprints but not anything about the other position. You are allowed to accept multiple offers so shouldn't impact you. Just have to decline 1 at some point.

I do currently make a rate of about $29/hr, however I am just trying to get my foot in the door. I understand that almost no one lands their dream job right out of the gate. It’s critical to accept that entrance is just a stepping stone and it may not be exactly what/where we want to be, but just the beginning of a career with the federal gvt and an opportunity to serve those who served at the VA. The mindset should not be where we begin but where we end up with effort and consistency. Thanks again and wish you have a nice weekend.

    The job closed 5/16. I was referred on 5/26. It is now 8/3, I have not received a call for an interview or any other updates. Do you think I should call to check the status of the application?

    Is there a difference between usajobs meanings of not selected and not hired?
    Someone told me that not selected means the person was referred to hiring manager but didn’t get an interview because hiring manager went with those they felt were more qualified .. is this true ?

      They mean the same thing. Not selected would be for the specific request. Not hired would be when hiring is complete. There could be multiple vacancies or something where you would show not selected until all hiring was complete.

      So technically if a job status is changed to hiring complete that closed 5 months ago and someone didn’t get an interview that was referred they would receive an email stating they were “ not selected “ correct ?

    Hey Kasey,
    Two questions. A job I applied to has me as referred to hiring manager atleast 2 weeks before the close date. But when the job close date was reached it showed over 2000 applicants. The opening is from gs7 to 15 and I got referred as a 12. Do my chances look good at all or would they prefer to stack the hiring at lower levels for cost reasons?
    Second question, is there a difference in the system between "applicants not referred" vs "you are not referred" or does it clerically mean the same thing?

      For the first question, cost isn't a factor usually. What usually happens is the hiring manager starts at the higher grades and works their way down because those applicants should have more experience. Not being referred would mean the same thing in either case.

    I am a newly hired (transferred from another agency). My Assignment of Duties changed after I accepted and started the new position. I am very disappointed because this is not what I applied for nor was I interviewed for the job I am now being forced to do. What can I do?

      Hate to hear that. If there is an extreme difference you can talk to your supervisor about it. If they don't want to discuss you could always contact the union and have them get involved. They would likely gather the recruitment information to confirm what your hired position was supposed to be.
