What a smart system. I guess I can just hone mine old Woodcraft inshave-scorp this way too. Wonderful video, for this neophyte. I am making large hand done bowls with Inshave, gouges, and chisels only. Looking at 4-8 inches of depth in a two or three foot long bowl....this , like all you videos, puts me to shame. I'm glad to live in a country where we still have Craftsmen. Wish I was a fly on the wall in this shop. You've got a lot of talent and skill. Thanks for being kind enough to put this on the TUBE. We NEED guys like you. Zooey
Curtis, I am concerned about the amount of material you are removing for two nicks. Future sharpenings will eventually take care of the nicks. Very good video, and you are a highly skilled craftsman! Thank you for the lessons. Bill.
You mention a drill press and drum sander for treating the inside, and a belt sander for the back. Couldn't you set up a drill chuck on the lathe and do the same thing? You could also turn the lathe into a disc sander to treat the back.
Hey there Curtis. I was wondering if you've found any advantage as far as performance with the bevel on outside vs. the inside. My Barr scorp has the bevel on the inside- worth changing?
Curtis Buchanan I understand the Isles is made bevel out. On the Barr Scorp, you’re just stuck with honing the inside bevel, right, or did you regrind it? I bought one and realized after I got it that it was going to be challenging to sharpen. Also, did you bend the handles on the Isles to your liking? I’ve read Elia saying that’s what he does. Thanks for the great content.
I/m redoing the wobbly inside vy rough? uneven, plus the 30 deg beve,l plus 1 flat reference edge, .Have d.press and stationary sander . Thats a lot of grinding.It/s an older 2 cherries that worked ok but not up to par.
I guess I would make it to where I could reference off it. I used to grind it free hand turned on its side, 90 degrees to the tool rest. This is the way I still do the adze and caving tools.
Best round knife sharpening video I've found on TH-cam.
I have watched all of your videos by the way. You do very nice work, and are great at teaching too!

thanks, glad you can use some of the information
Glad to see you getting all that shirt’s serviceable lifespan used up! Man after my own heart! Haha
Very instructive video. Good production values. May I suggest adding some ultra-closeups of the tool edge? Subscribing!

I never thought about that. I think it would work fine. I may try it on the inside.
I have a Barr scorp. The bevel is on the inside. You just put the bevel on the outside of your scorp.

The outside has a knife edge so you can come out of the cut. I grind a bevel on the outside so its easier for me to sharpen.
@@curtisbuchanan7691 I gotcha. Thanks as always

Great video Curtis. What do you do when you can't reference off the back edge of the scorp?

are you concerned a bought heat buildup..?
I pay close attention to not over heat the blade
Put your hand on the metal while you're grinding. If it's too hot to hold put in water between grindings
What grinding wheel do you use?
60 grit aluminum oxide
