Outhaul Performance Upgrade

  • Adding additional purchase (mechanical advantage) to the factory outhaul on the mainsail of a 2010 Precision 18 sailboat. Additional outhaul tension allows flattening of the bottom third of the mainsail. A flat sail has less draft (the depth or thickness of the airfoil shape--also called "chord") which reduces lift and drag for sailing in higher winds.

    That's right the thing I need to do in my 20 feet boat, are you holding the line with an attached camcleat to the boom? The line is Dyneema, right?

      The outhaul line is actually tied off to a horn cleat on the port side of the boom. The line is double braid polyester. On a larger boat it would make sense to use a camcleat and probably a 3:1 or better setup. Double side by side blocks are available to create an outhaul with more mechanical advantage. ⛵️
