It's really about the flame turrets. Dosh went full engineer and mathed out the cost of bullets and lasers versus pollution produced. It is a rush to flame turrets and pretty much just solely using them after.
But regular turrets consume iron via ammo. While laser turrets are often a less ideal choice, in this situation he was smart to go with the option that let him conserve his finite iron resource long enough to secure a better supply.
@@johnbenbob2000 The iron wouldn't be finite if he had actually defended it Even if you completely ignore the energy costs, the raw iron cost of a single laser turret is equal to more than 30 yellow magazines, which is 5 big biters worth of bullets with just the yellow projectile damage tech. If you are including the power to shoot the turrets, it gets even worse, as an un-upgraded laser turret takes 3.75 pieces of coal to kill a single big biter, or half that with energy damage 4 tech.
I love the editing and quality of it. For example the following of inserters or when you placed down the labs in the beginning with this mini screen shake. Perfect

I'm pretty sure you can beat the game with that "starter" 2 million iron, never needing to expand out. Holding that choke point is relatively simple, even at endgame biters.
Yeah, 2 million iron is way more than needed. It's funny that he spent so much time and effort securing something which is not needed, and will probably be his doom (the laser turret spam will likely eat his coal)

I love how spaghetti death world bases are. The first 50 or so hours are just chaos until your main base is fortified enough to think about expansion. Usually I leave that old base alone to slowly keep chugging away in the background while I build the new one. And eventually I come back to it to throw more resources at it just so it can keep that trickle of science and three other things I am too lazy to rebuild running. Of course just because I am 400+ hours in does not mean the spaghetti goes away. At that point it becomes train spaghetti, because I decided to set a stupid train length early on and refuse to change it.

There are some groovy dragon's teeth designs that will keep biters far enough away that they can't eat your turrets before you kill them. Also, full walls take damage from acid splash so it's cheaper to make them in layers
