A rather difficult segment of the Rally.
Narrow, dirt roads don't forgive any mistakes.
The spectators truly take some chances. Neverthless, accidents related to spectators are extremely rate.
People really trust the skills of the drivers.
However, around 20 years ago, in the Rally of Portugal, a Famous Driver lost control, plowing into the Fans.
Thirty people passed away and dozens were injured.
A few weeks later, in the Rally of Italy, the then Champion driving a Lancia 4×4, Turbo and also Supercharged, missed a turn and went downhill.
The Driver and the Navigator, or co-driver, passed away.
Both accidents caused a huge impact, leading to the end of the Class B cars -- there were no limitations, and the vehicles were far too powerful and dangerous.

Rally Portugal is a gravel rally, drivers know what they're going to be up against when they come here. That's why many of them consider it to be one of the toughest rallies in the calendar.
Oh, and about your pronunciation of Matosinhos: it was very close but not quite. I saw you struggled with the "nh" sound but since you know a bit of Spanish, it has the same sound as the "ñ" in Spanish. 🙂

In Rally Portugal there's almost always issues with dust. It's common in the early stages that drivers have issues with dust clouds from the drivers in front. The organizers eventually have to change the gaps to 4 minutes between the cars. I have a suspicion that the dust is very fine so it hangs in the air for longer than usual.

It's faster... these cars are heavier than Group B, and are roughly 400hp - which is lower than the peak of Group B.... but they have better suspension and brakes, their handling and grip is way beyond Group B levels, so the average speeds are much higher!
Thankfully they are a lot safer too.. though accidents can still happen (RIP Craig Breen)

Easiest way to watch these is a subscription on WRC site. I think it's about 10 Eur per month. I usually subscribe and cancel renewal right before the rally and often get two events within that one month sub. With the subscription you get all the stages throughout the weekend transmited live with commentary, otherwise the site also has the live timings, stage itinerary and other usual stuff for free.

  • @lionheartpt4555

Answering your question about it being high speed on some sections, actually it is always max speed at all times, the drivers try to keep the car on the edge of maximum speed, grip and accelaration thru all the corners and sectors, to make it short, it's max atack all the time.

50 percent of the landscape will be burned and gone probably by August. The area where they were racing is hit by bush fires every year, being it all ready this dry in May.... trouble is ahead. (BTW; I'm living on a lonesome hill in central Portugal, and rarely have a week where I can not see big clouds of smoke in the area). It only keeps a little spark... from a glass bottle that was left in nature or the tiniest spark from hitting a rock with a metal object (like the exhaust of a car). So just to say that the dust looks spectacular, but at the same time is a big warning for us living in this area...
PS. Like your comments on the videos, I watch a lot of them, all the best from Portugal.

Summer in Portugal (or spring end.. middle May in this case) is usually dry. The last rains usually (usually) happen in the first week of May. Then, no rain until October. Usually. Again, you may have a couple days of rain in between. So, in mid-May, the temperature starts to rise at first to comfortable 26ºC in May to 35ºC in Summer (sometimes it hits 40). The terrain is dry, especially in mountains, and highly flammable. Which is probably why the rally does not happen in the middle of the summer.

Rally is very broad when it comes to cars, their setup and types of tracks. From mountainy technical tracks to speedier flat courses, while changing from mud, to dirt, to tarmac or even snow and ice all in the same course.
Just the complexity of pilot/co-pilot communication throughout the course so they dont die against a tree or off a cliff is amazing.

I watched a lot of rally, in my young days. It was around the time of Group B. Unfortunately I list the option to watch along. I think it was because Eurosport stopped transmitting rally, as they skipped transmitting Formula Offroad from Iceland, GP500, and other motorsports I liked.
Very recently I got a subscription to WRC, via their app, and watches highlights of the first races of the year. Rally Portugal was the first event I watched fully, from Friday to Sunday.
It was so cool to see, after all these years. One of the reasons I really got the interest back, was because of all the reaction channels, who reacted to rally, and knew nothing about it. Your channel was on the front of those channels, so I guess I have to thank you, for lightning an old flame.
It was so cool to "be back", and I totally disagree with people, who says Group B was better. It wasn't. I find the current WRC at least as exiting. I don't mind the lack of crowds blocking the road. I don't miss seeing live in TV, that a spectator got his legs crushed, because he stood in front of a house, where a rally car list control, and drove right into him.
I can't wait for the next event, to take place!

This was a very dry year at Portugal ,and these forest sections on this trails are dusty and spectacular .I recommend to go looking for videos of the golden era of group B, somme rally's at Portugal had the crowds fully filling both sides of the roads at those older times ,that ended badly with deadly accidents , putting a end to group B , put enforcing the crowd control for safety... as usual some people don't respect the safety rules and we find some Darwin award contestants 3 feet of a jumping spot of a rally stage , near the safety rails on the nurbourg ring and so on...

I tried to post this yesterday but for some reason it didn't get posted so here it is:

It's the highlights for the 2022 Rampa da Falperra, an annual hill climb competition in Portugal. It's happening again this weekend.
Cars have to get to the top of the mountain in as little time as possible. It's a fun watch because many different cars and car types compete.

This rally is crazy when its the atual race and not training, people stand next to the road and some dudes even touch the car some of them even lose their fingers doing that.

If you think this is crazy you need to see some videos from the 80’s old Group B championship. Search for Walter Röhrl Portugal with Audi Quattro S1. You have at least one video inside the car with cameras showing foot work and some exterior ones where you can see how crazy it was by then with crowded stages…

The normal Portuguese who walk on the road already fly and drift with their cars LOOOL
So the rally drivers it is another level. But we are used to this since we were children :)

The footage is from pre event testing, not actually from the Rally de Portugal. if you look, the cars don't have numbers for example.

I'm curious: how do these guys drive outside the race? do they get bored in traffic? how about taking road-trips with their family? do they drive with the kids in the back seat going to the beach? can any of them drive Miss Daisy?

Those dusty gravel trails are good to see the rear aero work.. air is being pushed up to push the car down.. but when air is forced up it creates a negative airpressure and sucking the dust up upwards.. so if the car doesnt have downforce it will just spray gravel everywhere like you have with a normall car..

The tech used to build those R1s... really i think that those are the B Group of our times.
And remember you all, every single rally car is road legal! Between special stages they're driving through the ordinary traffic.

Ok, so I gotta confess something. The 80s group A alfa romeo gtv6 rally car is my favorite sounding rally car, and I'm super curious what you would think of it. A turbocharged 16 valve 2.6 liter v6 straight piped and reclining? Pure bliss...there's not much footage of it round here, but the ones you can find look into.

Hello I am Portuguese since I was 6 years old I live the rally of Portugal. There is already a myth: on the day of passage it is holy day, therefore St. rally's day. It is a day of pilgrimage to the place where we choose to see the rally, it is a day of union between friends, we have to live the rally that is inside our hearts. the best wrc in the world is in Portugal, it's not me saying it, it's the riders themselves who pass through here.
