I've introduced weight lifting to my child when he was eight years old. He plays rugby league and is small for his size. I incorporated strength and endurance training into his workout. He started off with water bottles and a broom stick. I just made sure everytime he lifts I was there with him. It's only dangerous when the child does it by him self with no supervision. Stress about technique and don't ever worry about how much weight they moving. As long as they are following the correct techniques, have good form and they are breathing properly strength exercise is the best thing to do for you're child.
I just started lifting with my son, he is 9 years old. He sometimes fights me, but after he is so so so happy and proud of himself. It is also a great bonding experience with your son. I tried running with him, but he doesn't enjoy it as much. We use light weights and mainly try to work on form. Form is key to get him used to the movements, once that happens he then can work on strength and endurance.

I know I’m late but you can lift as much as you want as long as you are comfortable and don’t injure yourself.
