The John in this song is John Stokes, who was Sinéad O'Connor's piano teacher. She sings his praises, letting him know she loves him and thinks the world of her. Although Sinéad was madly in love with him, he resisted her advances. "He wasn't interested in me at all because he was quite sensible and knew that I was completely out of my mind," she wrote in her memoir Rememberings. "Still, we were friends and I was really fond of him, loved him very, very much." Rest in Peace, Sinéad. There are many, many fans that loved you too and will miss you.
I remember an interview where Sinèad said she thought that she actually wrote it to herself. She mentioned that her name is a feminized form of John. Whatever the case, it’s a remarkable song.❤
Adeus 🙏🕊

One of my ultimate favorite songs by this beautiful, sensitive soul. My heart breaks for you, Sinead. I'm devastated by your passing. I wish you all the peace you could not find on this earth.
What a voice, what a talent! For years she took serious shit for her protest against the Pope and the RC church. She took a slam that she never really recovered from, and is impacted by to this day. As an Irish woman, and someone who was raised Catholic, now it seems she was very much aware of things most could not or would not talk about. She was RIGHT! Totally spot on. A very brave soul indeed!
The movie Spotlight is an absolute must for everyone to watch. At the end when the credits were rolling, they showed the names of every city or town in the world where there were children molested by priests…it was hundreds. I was bawling my eyes out. Sinead was well ahead of her time.
I JUST discovered this today about the song. Keep in mind that Sinead was sent to an all-girls Catholic School, so she did know her Bible: "Book of John 3:16 - John I love You, I'm ever so fond of You. I let tears of repentance fall like rain, there's life outside your mother (Eve's) garden. // Kick off the wedding blues of the old husband (BOOK OF ROMANS 7:2-4). //Child, you're tender. (Ephesians 4:32) Your Name's a whisper. Ah, such is the new heart we receive in Christ. // (Ezekial. 36:26). This time don't let yourself die - but be born of the spirit - John 3:3 . [Not to mention The Wizard of Oz: "We're not spinning like Dorthy."-]
She certainly was right. And it was not unknown what was going on, but no one cared. Look how many still don't care. Belief is more powerful than truth.
Nearly 19 years ago I played this after my mother's funeral. It still makes me cry and now I cry for you Sinead. I'm so thankful you left me an amazing legacy in music. You were an original and there will never be another like you. ❤

When the CD came out I bought it and threw it into the CD Player. This was the second song on it I believe. We had our first baby a few months before. My name is John. It really just hit me all over! Such a great song and this performance is a testament to how good she and the band were. No lip sync, no ear piece, just a voice matching the music perfectly.

She's a spellbinding singer, the charisma, the lyrics, the voice. She has everything. Her first two albums are astonishing, this third one has its moments too.

John I love you
I’m ever so fond of you
Will you wait for me
‘Til I am heavenly
Oh there’s much work to do
But I love you
Oh you’re tender
Your names a whisper
I let tears fall like rain
Apple-sized they were
All over her
And through all of those times
When you could have died
This is what you find
There’s life outside your mothers garden
There’s life beyond your wildest dreams
There hasn’t been any explosion
We’re not spinning like Dorothy
If you look now then you’ll see why
Don’t be afraid to cry
This time don’t let yourself fly
Child
Pick up those dancing shoes
Kick off those wedding blues
These are the ways
You can choose
Child you’re tender
Your names a whisper
There’s life outside your mothers garden
There’s life beyond your wildest dreams
There hasn’t been any explosion
We’re not spinning like Dorothy
If you look now then you’ll see why
Don’t be afraid to cry
This time don’t let yourself fly
Child
Pick up those dancing shoes
Kick off those wedding blues
These are the ways
You can choose
Child I love you
I’m ever so fond of you
