  • We still have a few hummingbirds visit the flowers in our backyard in our Zone 9a garden south of Houston, Texas. We have females, so I believe they have nested somewhere close. Hummingbirds prefer flowers that are tubular shaped, and show preferences towards bright colors like red and orange. Join me in this video as I show you the flowers they are visiting in our yard this early June:
    Hummingbird Falls Salvia
    Amante and Amistad Salvia
    Cuphea or Cigar Plant (David Verity and Vermillionaire varieties)
    Cardinal Climber (grown each year from seed) • Cardinal Climber Vine ...
    Russelia (Firecracker Plant)
    Balloon Milkweed flowers
    Porterweed
    Coral Honeysuckle
    Firebush
    Turk's Cap
    Shrimp Plant
    Salvia Madrensis or Forsythia Sage
    Flame Acanthus
    Here is the video I did on hummingbird feeders: • The best #hummingbird ...

    So beautiful!! We're in 7B, west of Wichita Falls, and we're a little more limited on what we can grow here. Definitely colder in the winter, and hotter and much drier in the summer! So far this year our two coral honeysuckles has bloomed well, and we added one more small one this spring. Our salvias have bloomed steadily, all varieties that can take the cold winters here. Our flame acanthus plants are coming on strong but haven't started blooming yet. A few plants that I didn't think would attract hummers are lantana and vitex. The lantana has naturalized for our cold winters and gets almost 6 feet tall! The hummers don't like it as much as some of the other flowers, but they will come to it too. The vitex isn't native, but they handle our hot dry summers so well! Another one our hummers love, which is a native, is desert willow. We have two young trees, and they are blooming well right now. We tried cardinal climber from seed a couple summers ago, and I made the mistake of planting too many. They almost choked out my coral honeysuckle and a crossvine! We have some that came up on their own this spring, but they are way too small to bloom so far. I learned my lesson too, and only have 5 this year, spaced out much farther apart. They are a fantastic one for hummers though! One more that I love that hummers also love, red yucca. You don't get as many blooms as some other flowers, but the hummers do love them! We also have turk's cap, but that one has been a real challenge for me with our colder winters.
    Thank you for showing us your beautiful yard!

      Thank you for your wonderful post!!! (I didn't realize the zone was 7B west of Wichita Falls.) 6 ft. tall Lantana ... just wow! 🤩 And Coral Honeysuckle is such a wonderful plant to have in the garden. Do you supplement with water since you have such hot and dry summers? Thank you for sharing what does well for you in your garden. I'm going to pin your post so others will see it. Happy Gardening! 😊🐛🦋🐝🌺🐦

      You are so right! I have had more luck finding what I want in very early spring though. Garden centers have their best selections at that time. And then there are some plants I have had to order online.

    The hummingbirds love my coral honeysuckle, salvias and Turks cap. The butterflies can’t seem to get enough of my society garlic.

    You are right about the cardinal climber it’s such a great vine to grow and mine blooming earlier this year and blooms very late in fall for me and I’m in panhandle of florida

      It is unusual how early it is blooming. We have two females and one or two males in the area, and this is the first thing they go to early in the morning. I am glad to have the blooms now. I do hope it still fills out and blooms heavily in the fall too. We'll see. It is interesting you are seeing the same thing in the FL panhandle. Thank you for sharing! 👍🐛🐝🌺🦋🐦

    Wow! All beautiful plants in your backyard! This past Summer was Brutal, we went 40 something days of no rain in July and August with temps 100+ every day in northern Louisiana. Hope next Summer will be more mild.
    Where did you get your Flame Acanthus plant? Plan on adding it and Coral Honeysuckle here next Spring 🌱🌿

    • @ButterfliesNBirds
      @ButterfliesNBirds  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello! I so agree with you, our summer here was also very brutal. It was similar to what you described for your area in northern Louisiana. In August the accumulation of no rain plus day after day of 100+ degree weather killed some of my plants. Many days we had excessive heat warnings where the "feels like" temps were in the 120s due to our high humidity. It was one for the record books. I also hope that next summer is more mild, actually I would take "normal"! lol.
      You won't be disappointed with the Flame Acanthus and Coral Honeysuckle. Both are natives and attract so many butterflies, pollinators, birds, etc. I got my Flame Acanthus from a nursery south of Houston called Enchanted Gardens. 😊

      @@ButterfliesNBirds 120° "feels like" temp sounds so blazing hot! Ours were around 114°. For the most part all my plants survived except for a Smokey Jazz Salvia. The relentless heat took it out. Thank you for sharing the Nursery you had got your Flame Acanthus! Enchanted Gardens is over a 4 hour drive for me, but sounds so worth it come early Spring 😁

    • @ButterfliesNBirds
      @ButterfliesNBirds  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @geauxtigers_8458 That is a very long drive! If you are ever in the area, I would call them first to see if they have what you want. I have done that and I live an hour away. I really do like this nursery, as I have gotten so many beautiful and healthy plants from them. They also have what grows well in our climate. I lost about 6 salvia this summer to our brutal heat. (They were the Salvia guaranitica types). 😕 It makes me rethink if I want them again. I will always have Salvia Amistad (it is a guaranitica hybrid) even though I also lost one of those.
