    Alphonzo is awesome. I went to school with him back to the fourth or fifth grade. I love seeing all his accomplishments in life. Wish him all the success in the world.

    Were you supposed to close the other hole with like a plug or something or even just tape to stab a hole in to make the vacuum chamber not pressurized....?
    Still cool concept

      If we had used a very strong box (one that wouldn't collapse when the vacuum is applied) we wouldn't need an intake vent. But most people don't have such a strong box around the house. The air intake is also keeps you from burning out the motor on your home vacuum cleaner! In any event, all we'd need to do is lower the pressure just a bit to cause rapid evaporation. Which leads to a good idea: maybe next time we do this we'll place a vacuum meter on the box to demonstrate the relative difference in air pressure inside and outside it. Thanks for connecting! Your query inspired a nice potential improvement to this demo!

      @@MidnightScienceClub ohhhhhh that motor thing really makes sense!!! Yeah I was confused. But makes sense because I've vacuumed sealed clothes in those bags and smaller older vacuums overheat or turn off and I'm there for ever trying to get a good suction. But when I've used shop vacs it sucks with much greater force haha.
      But for the stronger box thing I was just thinking like any tote you would have to store clothes in but not the see through ones. I assumed they were a little tougher or thicker. But yeah the way you explained it just now made so much sense!!!!!!!

      By having that hole, you didn’t create a vacuum there. You were just blow drying with air.

    Awesome video! I have two questions:
    1. How long does the drying process take?
    2. Doesn’t it burn the sneaker materials?

    • @MidnightScienceClub
      @MidnightScienceClub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      From Jake Wizard IV himself:
      1. Usually, just a few minutes. Of course, it depends on how much water is within the shoe materials. I would caution against trying to "speed things up," too much. At lower air pressure, the water inside the shoe fibers or layers will boil off or evaporate very quickly...a few minutes is all it should take. And, of course, it depends on how strong a vacuum is being applied.
      2. If you are referring to the vacuum method....no, the temperature does not sufficiently change to harm the shoe. Commonly, we add heat to a solution to get it to boil and evaporate. Adding heat causes water molecules in solution to move about more and more, until they can overcome the pressure of nearby air pushing onto the water...and away they go! The vacuum method causes similar boiling action...without adding more heat to the water. It merely lowers the pressure pushing on the water.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hello! I have another 2 Questions:
    1. What would happen if the sneakers had an air valve/bubble, like AIRMAX 90’s? Would they pop by the depressurization?
    2. If you put some humidity absorbers inside the box, would it reduce the drying time?

    • @MidnightScienceClub
      @MidnightScienceClub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure thing! Here's the Wizard's response:
      "Indeed, there is the possibility the innersole bladder could burst in a high vacuum chamber. However, is this case I suggest it is fairly unlikely. The inflatable shoe bladder is designed to withstand several atmospheres of pressure but the nature of the work they perform. A person wearing the shoes with inflated bladders could easily impart several times the force of normal air pressure as they jump and land on a hard surface. The bladders are tough.
      Humidity absorbents do grab and hold moisture from the air...but rather slowly. It is reasonable to assert the addition of absorbents would speed up drying...but, I doubt it would be significant. However, over the long term, water-laden air cold easily seep into the storage container, bringing a fresh supply of water. In that case, it would be wise to have the absorbents to capture water as it enters."
      Hope that helps!

    I wonder why they dont seal the other hole?

    • @MidnightScienceClub
      @MidnightScienceClub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Having air flow through the device helps clear out the moisture as it evaporates off the shoes. Plus, it’s hard on a vacuum cleaner to run without airflow for long periods of time.

      @@MidnightScienceClub Does the moisture you pull into the vacuum cleaner receptacle condense there and give you a sticky mess in your wife's favorite vacuum? Pretty sure you will be needing to buy your own wet/dry vacuum soon or you'll be sleeping in your lab.

  • @Leo-eb1wl

    I don’t mean to be a sceptic but that other hole in the back of the bucket means this is not lowering the pressure at all. Essentially all this is doing is creating wind entering one end and existing via the hand held vacuum connected to the other end. This should be called creating a home made wind bucket to dry your clothes.

    • @MidnightScienceClub
      @MidnightScienceClub  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s great that you are a skeptic! Indeed, there was a secondary hole on the back side of the square bucket. We were not attempting to create a perfect vacuum within the box but rather lower the pressure a bit. A complete vacuum in that inexpensive box would cause it to collapse.
      I suppose we should have employed a vacuum meter to clearly demonstrate the interior pressure depression. I could observe evidence the box had a lower pressure, as once the vacuum was turned on, bits of dust on the desk flew into the box through the secondary hole. That would only occur if there was a partial vacuum within. I suppose one could consider the box as an odd vacuum cleaner tool added to the end of the hose.
      Of course, the lower pressure within the box lasted only as long as the vacuum cleaner was operating. Lowering pressure within the box really did speed up the shoe drying process. Thanks for your skepticism and sharp eye because the next time we do that demo, we may have an experimental control via a second damp shoe drying without the aid of lower pressure...and then compare the results.
