From the U.S. perspective, my father has a PhD, my boyfriend is getting one, and my sister's boyfriend finished his last fall. They are/were in geology, history of science, and biomedical engineering, respectively. I've never heard of a PhD in under 4 years (except maybe for literal geniuses), until you said that.

I actually managed to learn how to use SPSS by playing around with it in the university library and getting taught some bits by one of my friends in the first month of being at university. I've just finished my first year in university and I'm slightly relieved that I'm not getting taught online anymore because it was ruining my mental health (ironic for a psychology degree)

As I've just finished my masters degree in Environmental Management and GIS - 3 years distance learning whilst working full time, I can totally relate to this. Especially the SPSS and dissertation ones, so many stats struggles! Also great survey! 🙂

We’re told (Geography/ St Andrews) our PhD is three years long (and that’s how long it’s funded for I think) but our matriculation cards state our end date as four years from start 😅. Great to see PhD content!

My friend is doing a PhD in law and she recent said that what they don't tell you about PhDs is funding lasts 3 years but it takes most people 4 years to complete it.

I'm a first year psychology PhD student at Warwick, I'm officially expected to complete in 3 years but apparently it's pretty common to have that extended by up to a year
I'm in my final year of my PhD and it's my 4th year - I was only funded for three years, but in generally it's understood it will take 4 years. I'm in History of Medicine, so not so much science-y stuff.
Writing is its own personal form of hell.

I finished my PhD in 2 years 9 months. I also never saw my family, or did anything if it didn't have to do with my PhD. I'm so glad I'm done

Since you've asked: I did my PhD in biology in Germany. It lasts 3 years (officially) but usually the supervisors don't wanna let you go and thus don't wanna let you finish up and give you more and more tasks. I guess this is because many labs struggle for good students and teaching a newbie everything again is just way too much work for them and the other members. So once they trained you and you'll a driving force of the lab they can't afford to lose your working power. We're cheap labor after all.
I finished within 4 years and got my supervisor to agree on that only because I managed to snatch a postdoc position to follow up. She wouldn't have let me defend otherwise, I'm sure.
Oh wow! Related to most of the memes. Catapulted back 40 odd years (psychology, too) when any and every changed word, edit, modification, meant typing several pages over and over again (reams and reams, quires and quires). I envy anyone who can now use cut, copy and paste. Not too sure about envying SPSS but doing stats by hand is tedious and often goes wrong because you miss your place in a column. I swear that by the end I developed selective amnesia for words like "type", "write", "edit", - what is paper? what does literature review mean? On a much lighter note, I was pleased to be asked to contribute survey subject data to your sampling. Good luck but you will survive and be successful.

Shaaba! How have we not met before! I came here from Hannah Witton's post today. I'm doing my PhD at LSE Media & Comms, and ethnographic study of the lived experiences and labour of content creators in the online video industry. Spent the last 3 years going to industry events like SitC and VidCon, interviewing creators and making autoethnographic videos about my own PhD journey. I feel like we should be friends!! xx

Especially when a student brings in some knew knowledge and info, and you look at it and go "eeee.... Am I that stupid? What are they talking about? Keep poker face"

Shaaba, I'm about to start my phuh duh in the fall and I'm scared-cited. Both scared and excited. Your channel shows me it's possible to hold down work and do a job, so when I have to do both starting next summer it makes me less nervous. I'm grateful I have at least three quarters of just school to ease the transition first, though! Then I'm moving in with my now fiance! So many good things are happening in my life, and I count finding your and Jamie's channels among them! Stay radiant!

The last meme is so relatable 😂 As Asian, when family members knew I was taking my Masters, questions they ask will either be "what's your thesis?" or "why didn't you proceed to Medicine?" And everytime me and my friends ( who are also taking their Masters and doing their thesis) see each other, we always try to avoid asking about how we were doing with our thesis so far 😂

Omg Shaaba! I related to that SPSS meme on a spiritual level because it brought me right back to my grad statistics class! But seriously TH-cam tutorials for SPSS are somewhat helpful! If I can learn moderated mediation using the Andrew Hayes plug-in thing (because SPSS doesn’t have the capability to do that without extra help) you can learn SPSS!

My PhD took 6 years. Three years of coursework, and three writing my Dissertation, followed four of undergraduate, and two years of my Master’s Degree. I had to pay for it all....now, I watch PhD students on TH-cam...😹😹😹😹

At our uni, there are two options for duration of the PhD, either three years and no lecturing or four years and 25% of the time overall spent helping in lecturing.

My mum was doing a PhD for 6 years (including corrections and things)
I am in the last 6 months of my PhD, and at this point, I am just surviving xD. PhD life is ups and downs, one day you think that finally solve one of the problems and on the next day you realise that the solution open 1000 more questions and possibilities.
If someone needs a shoulder to cry on or some advice, let me know. PhD life is stressful and sometimes depressive, but there are people that want to help.
See in Scotland, University undergrads are 4 years (well three but with an honours year)

Spent 6 months in the bush alone in the canadian winter working on an animal behaviour project. 2 weeks before submitting the write up another lab contacts to say they are publishing a case study simultaneously to us to say the same thing. I feel you on the ‘oh same’ reaction. Super nice and flattering to be contacted for mutual citation by a fairly big name in the field though, so still a win?

My dad is doing his PhD on sex trafficking victims. I think it’s taken about 4-5 years because we’ve had a lot going on recently that threw his schedule off track. I’m not doing a PhD (yet) but I hope that I have better time management and better circumstances than him

I’m a first year grad student in the US in chemistry. I don’t know if your program was direct from bachelors to PhD without a masters or not. Mine is and on average the time to degree is 5.25 years so very different from yours. My program also has the masters built in although a lot of them don’t. But we also get paid to do it, mostly from TAing or other fellowships
somehow watching you complaining about the phd life made me really wanna be a phd student ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wow, this video makes me really uncomfortable.. I have so much respect for you and all the people who are doing this, because I have to give a 20 minute presentation as an end exame of my school and I am completely lost and I hate it and I cannot start and it gives me anxiety.. i mean it's so stupid, and I know people in university do this as a home work paper so often and I just can't. ok have a great day!
