The one thing you do that I tend to disagree with, is your choice of stopper knot. You use an overhand knot. I prefer a figure8 knot. It takes no more time to tie, but a better knot in my opinion. Anywhere an overhand can be used, a figure8 can. To each their own...
I might have missed it but if you haven't can you please make a video in detail of why you use specific knots and hitches? So like if we needed to make a shelter use this and why and so on? Thank you. I love your videos! Very educational
@@halkael2317 Also, the figure eight knot is larger so it is less likely to slip through whatever size hole you are "stoppering." And the figure eight knot is easier to untie than the overhand after the knots get wet and over-stretched. On the other hand, in his example of turning a slip knot into a jam knot, I believe the overhand is more secure, since the figure eight could capsize into another figure eight and "walk" off the end of the cord.
You have legitimately created the most user friendly video guide to tying knots i've seen. Even back to your original bowline videos. They truly are OUTSTANDING. thank you for taking the time to share. I know I have learned a lot from them.
You are my go-to channel whenever I want to learn a survival or bushcraft technique, I come to your channel first to see if you have it, the only instructor on yt that I know I will be able to learn the technique from one vid the first time 👍🏻
Dont ever apologize for repetition or refreshers. This is my go to for knots and I thank you for it!!! I treat knots like i do my archery. Practice Practice Practice
I cant tell you how many times I've used your knot videos to find a knot I need...in the garage...camping ... Thank you from an old Navy man that has forgotten so much.
As a veteran, I love the outdoors; just came across your site last week and haven’t stopped watching it. You are one of the few who pays attention to details and explains every step both verbally and visually. Your a great instructor and very methodical in your way of teaching. Be safe my brother and thank you for serving.🇺🇸🇺🇸
I've watched a bunch of your videos and followed along using my own cordage; and what I've found is that you have an amazing gift for making things very simple and easy to understand. Thank you for that. It seems a rare thing. For me, I've watched a ton of videos on different ways of tying the same knots and have learned multiple knots; because my aim has been to UNDERSTAND THE ESSENCE OF KNOT TYING. And I think I'm beginning to. That way; if you were to come across a situation you had never prepared for and had to get creative - understanding the ESSENCE of the different kinds of knots and how they function in different ways can give you a leg up in creating a viable solution. For instance... I noticed a similarity between the cow's hitch, the lark's head knot, the prusik knot, and the cat's paw. They all use the same basic movement; while the cat's paw adds a twist to both sides. I watched a video on the Marlin Spike Hitch; where the guy gave something like 5 different knots that could be created from that one knot. One of those was the slip knot, another was the bowline. There again... it pays to understand the INNER WORKINGS OF KNOTS and how you can transform them to other knots. If you know the reason WHY something works; you can easily work out how to tie these same knots or new ones, or even ones that are better.
I really appreciate how you show a couple ways to achieve the same result. The attention to detail has brought me confidence in my ability to replicate what you do with precision. You are a great teacher.
I was homeless for 6 years; and wish I had learned some of these knots, hitches and such, back then. Now, I have made it a mission to learn the most valuable knots; and eventually, I will teach them to other homeless people. I understand what you say about simplicity. When I would wrap my bedroll; I found a way to simply wrap (spiral several times) the two tag ends around the main lines, which caused a lot of friction to keep the tension, without having to rely on knots. Undoing the whole thing was very simple. I would squeeze the roll in order to remove the outward pressure and simply pull from the center or the beginning of the windings. Something else that I can imagine would come in quite handy; is that palm wrap thing that you did in another video... keeping the cordage nice and tidy and instantly deployable, while remaining free of tangles as you unwind it. Brilliant!
you rock, Corporal! don't stop the simplicity! I love that you repeat the same knots in different videos IN CONTEXT so I a) learn the knot and b) understand the context in which it is used. For those of us who are spatially impaired, and have little to no experience, it is more helpful than any other survival channel out there for learning the basics and feeling confident. I think I've watched your "minimum shelter kit" video 50 times to learn the bowline, prussik, and trucker's hitch in context of putting up a basic shelter, LOL! there are lots of great channels on survival for those who already have the basics - so KISS works for both beginners to gain confidence and to remind experienced folks of the power of simplicity!
I agree, as an example take a lock set, there are those that have only a few tools - 2 Picks, 2 Rakes and 2 L shaped to push the lock open - which is all you really need to pick a lock, than at the high end, you have those that have say 100 tools to choose from. Me, I'll take the fewest number that I know how to use and under what conditions. The 3 knots you show are the basics you need to get started, from that add only those knots you feel will need and practice them in that situation. Thank you for a great video, as all your's are.
I’m glad that you are persistent, I am a 72 year old lady trying to learn these knots, I have been using the truckers knots for years and didn’t know that it had a name... I sit with a small green rope (which I know probably has a name) trying to do these knots! You are right though about keep your brain busy, thanks for what you do, have a blessed day
Until last year I was not very much into camping or shelters or anything like that. I saw your videos because of the paracordknots/hitches I was interrested in. The way you showed how to tie the hitches is simply great! Because of your videos I am now able to set up a tarp in a very short amount of time. For me it was really helpful that you have shown your hitches not in a single video but in several videos where you set up a line. The repetition is the reason I've learned it. I like your way how comprehensible you instruct us viewers during the video. Thank you for all the tips and tricks! Greetings from Gießen/Germany🤗
Been fully furloughed for a month now due to covid 19. So needless to say its a challenge to fight the boredom. It’s a cold windy morning here in the Texas panhandle so outside activities aren’t a usual option. But i started watching your knots and lashes video, grabbed a piece of rope, and started learning the knots. It truly helped time go by easily and i found myself smiling and talking to you in the video. You never know just how a video will help someone out there. Thank you for helping this ol retired fireman with a passion for survival fight the boredom off till my hospital maintenance job returns. What you do is appreciated far more than you know...
practice practice practice :) my boat friend required that I tie at least 100 bolins a day L and R until I could do it automatically with either hand now three years later, I still can do it!
I appreciate the repetition and the simplicity of your system. I've watched a number of your videos and the repetition in them has allowed me to learn some of the knots without having to back up and re-watch the same video time and again. I'm excited to get out and try them. I've always been a tent person but I'm wanting to take my tarp out and play with it to utilize the quick-deploy ridgeline system I made modeled on what you do. Thank you.
Your're instructions are plain and easy to understand, you take the time to explain in detail where other wanabe bushcraft video's do not, i'm very gratefull for you sharing this knollage and i cant help but picture myself living with native americans in the 18th centuary lol if i was not so ill now i would be out there myself but age haS CAUGHT UP WITH ME NOW AND MY PAST ABUSE OF MY BODY LIMMITS ME BUT ILL BE DAMNED IF I DONT GET OUT THERE NEXT FALL
Super easy and direct instructions on how to tie knots!! I’ve watched other videos and they don’t compete on how informative your videos are. Amazing videos keep up the good work!!
I like your mindset very much and can’t agree more - having a few important knots and hitches burned into your brain and having the ability to use them in critical situations without thinking makes a huge difference and can even safe lives. Awesome video, very helpful - semper fi Marine! 🗽
I hadn't seen anyone start with the marlin and end up with a bowline before..very slick! All of these are some of my favorites for our craft. Excellent presentation as always sir!
I once knew a lot of bends, hitches and knots--that was a long time ago. Now I'm relearning some of them from Cpl. Kelly; his videos are outstanding AF.
Thanks Corporal, keep showing these knots in all your vids, i can almost make one before i even tried to make it myself. Your my go to guy on You Tube.
Knots splices, hitches, and slings are very useful. I have found them so. As most people cant tie them. Its just practice really, you soon het the hang of it. I served in the Royal Navy uk, and have found them very usefull, in both my naval service and out side the service. Very good that video on knots. And informative.
When you do a running commentary on knots saying things like, “away from me”, “around the tree”, “back through the hole” etc it really helps explain what you’re doing but also how to remember the steps later on. I usually get your knots first time. Thanks!
Excellent video! I like the reinforcement of these fundamentals. In high stress/pressure situations that muscle memory will be key to success. Awesome.
When I was in the Navy, we had to learn lots of rope work, didn't use them much after that, plus those days were a long, long time ago! your presentations have proved very useful, now I am into Wild Camping, anybody thinking of doing that, can learn all the Hitches etc of Corporal, most will include Bacon and Cheese too.
Ha Ha! Thank you! Ive struggled trying to make a bow line and i amaze myself how many different ones i make and all different. Your version of the marlin made it finally simple for me. Im glad you repeat them because though simple for the experienced it is very complex and hard for me to learn unless i can get it down to memory mucle as you said.
I have binged on your videos for over 12 hours. Your content is some of the best I've seen on TH-cam. Thank you for the great information and presentation.
I’ve learned ALL my knots, hitches, and lashes from you because of the repetition and application Corporal. Much appreciated and truly all one needs to get er done! Outstanding
I fully learned these knots in grade school, I'm 59 now and now am an avid sailing afficienado, Some of these knots, humbly spoken, are scouting & sailing knots not only used for such.
I love learning more knots and their use, but you’re right. Simplicity is key! Specially when it hits the fan, or you are not a knot lover/memorizor. Everything you need, and nothing you don’t. Take care.
You are absolutely right, I've studied the knots and lashes you use and I really don't see where I have need for many others although I do have an app on my phone that goes into some more different knots and lashes but some are very complicated and complicated sucks, I'm too old for all that. Thank you for the lessons. Dwayne
My dad made me tie knots behind my back with one hand. Growing up i did as i was told but i thought he was over the top. Till one night i needed to tie my knots and hold on to car to keep it from rolling. A truck with and a car in a ditch.
Muscle memory is so important! It was difficult for me to earn to tie my shoes in a different way (in order to make sure they would not come untied without a double knot -which still comes untied!) but now I know no other way! I intend to tie things over and over till I get to produce the correct knots every time.
We always followed the KISS principle, especially when in the field. If you have to stop and think about what you're doing, and that task is a routine one, you either have not drill enough, or what you're doing has been made over complicated. For example, do you think about every step you take, when tying your laces? The answer is no, it's done automatically with muscle memory for the most part. These knots should be muscle memory, no thinking required. Great instructional video, keep em coming.
i spent hours tonight doing this with para-cord and rewinding this video over and over again. i got it! i got all of it! every single bit of it i got!!!! that's so cool how the marlin spike is the 1st part of the bowline! that's pretty cool! also cool how you suspended the poncho too! i wasn't thinking about getting a hammock but now i am! i ran onto this video for your $250 wal-mart video! both are excellent!!! i super-thumbs up'ed it! thx corporal you're worth a million!!!
Great video... learned basic knots in Boy Scouts many many years ago. Some I can tie in my sleep, some o don’t remember at all! I need to re learn many! Thanks for post, I am going to practice some of these! Thanks for posting!
Most of these are my go knots, too. I usually use the taut line hitch more than the trucker’s hitch. (Old Boy Scout habits die hard.) For those who want to learn more knots, just google knot tying. There are several good sites and some even have animation to lead you through the steps. Keep up the good work!
Hey Devil Dog! From one Corporal to another and as a current Scoutmaster for my son's Boy Scout, I have to ensure they know their knots. You've given me some new ideas and taught me some different methods to teach my Scouts. Keep up the Outstanding work. Semper Fi!
I know this has been four years ago but maybe you'll read it , Plus This might be just a little long I apologize. I know why you teach the knots the same way every time you show tying a knot. Answer, you are a teacher and when one teaches they say the same thing and the same way every single time it's called repetition and that's the way you teach people and honestly you're pretty good at it. I also noticed that you change it up from time to time because sometimes there's more simpler ways to tie a knot or just another way but no matter which Trail you take you come up at the same place. I appreciate you taking the time to show the knots kind of in slow motion because I may be a lot older and I may have done this a lot but still I can forget from time to time if I don't use them that's why whenever you tie a knot I tie right along with you just to activate my muscle memory. There's a lot of knots that I haven't forgot and a few that I have forgotten. So if anyone reads this in the future from this day forth maybe they will understand why you tie your knots and why you teach the way you do. I appreciate it anyway. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
Fantastic. Have been struggling to learn some of these knots in other videos. Your presentation was clear, and practical. Bro clearly shown. I learned more on this one video than all the others combined...... And there were a ton of them. I am sticking you you from now on. Subscribed, and have watched your presentation in other areas. Professional in all aspects
Thanks I use many of those but had not heard of the truckers before. Oh good job on pounding in the stake lol. Learned early on stepping on a tent stake is a good way to break or bend one. But I see videos all the time of them doing that lol.
Bruce Lee said he wasn’t scared of the man who knew a thousand techniques, he was scared of the man who practiced one technique a thousand times, you have the same philosophy 👍🏻
I completely agree with muscle memory. I wasn’t out for a while during the Covid and when I went to hang my tarp I kept messing up trying to tie a bowline know for my ridge line. Don’t complicate it.
Great informative video, thank you. A lot of people tend to overlook something as simple as remembering a few knots. I have the taut line hitch down to a t. I like using it for my tarp set ups, Lashing things to packs or whatever I'll use the old Canadian jam knot.. Thanks again ATB from the Yellowknife
I miss this ‘sergeants time’ type instruction. Thx mate. I got injured & had to pack it in early, but if I had a choice, I’d never have left the Army. These days I play with knots & ponchos to keep my sanity lol.

VERY useful vid to teach you some very good camp/survival knots. EVERYONE should know these knots!!!
I’ve learned ALL my knots, hitches, and lashes from you because of the repetition and application Corporal. Much appreciated and truly all one needs to get er done! Outstanding

Thanks for the prusik knot. I wish I knew about that one over the last 50 years, but it's never too late to learn. Great stuff!!!
The prussik that he showed is actually a modified one. More for mountaineering. A true prussik only loops around twice, not thrice.
Muscle memory is so important! It was difficult for me to earn to tie my shoes in a different way (in order to make sure they would not come untied without a double knot -which still comes untied!) but now I know no other way! I intend to tie things over and over till I get to produce the correct knots every time.
Thanks, I've seen a bunch of knot vid's. Liked the way you "tied" it all together with real world uses. Excellent.
Your explanation right on the spot, why complicate things.
this is beyond amazing, it's life-saving! Very well explained and very useful!
Thanks for the tutorial, Corporal! And from a Civilian, THANK YOU for your Service!!!
Corporal,
thanks for taking the time to go over these. I need to practice I was only a Specialist during my time in the Army.
Thanks again!
Great instructional video, keep em coming.
i spent hours tonight doing this with para-cord and rewinding this video over and over again. i got it! i got all of it! every single bit of it i got!!!! that's so cool how the marlin spike is the 1st part of the bowline! that's pretty cool! also cool how you suspended the poncho too! i wasn't thinking about getting a hammock but now i am! i ran onto this video for your $250 wal-mart video! both are excellent!!! i super-thumbs up'ed it! thx corporal you're worth a million!!!
i meant from your $250 wal-mart video.
Amen 🙏! 😃👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. Thanks again Corporal!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for keeping it simple! Knots have always been a point of frustration - NO LONGER! From S. PHX.
Thank you, I will be practicing these, you are very good at teaching how to. Hope my memory will stick with practice.
The Bible of useful knots, highly recommended. 🏅🥇🏆
Excellent video sir. Thank you for your knot lessons!
Just used the Ridgeline Config today...excellent! You have significantly improved my knowledge level and ability in less than 24 hours. Thank you!
Excellent
Man if all you need is 3 to 5 knots and lashes why waste brain space with 50 other options. Love the work you do Mr. Kelly thank you.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience! 👍👍✊
As always simple clear instruction, thank you.
Great video... learned basic knots in Boy Scouts many many years ago. Some I can tie in my sleep, some o don’t remember at all! I need to re learn many! Thanks for post, I am going to practice some of these! Thanks for posting!
Oh I vote for option #2 with the, bowline. Going to bookmark this vid., that seems so much easier to do one handed. Thanks. Big thumbs up.
I think your on to something here and I like the way you show different ways to tie the same knots and why.
Joe Pieczynski or piecyznski did a simple scientific proof of concept why the truckers hitch is a superior knot.
I always appreciate your very informative videos. Simplicity is always best. Thank you for sharing.
Semper Fi!
thank you Corporal for your informative yet easy to follow tutorials keep them coming
figure 8 stopper knot in the bitter end of a line in yachting is used to prevent the line from running freely through a sheve or block
It's really a great feeling when you use a combination of hitches and bends to do something and it turns out right first time.
Very good! Again very pleased with your video and the work you put in them. Nice to have such great learning videos that are straight to the point.
Looking at this, through the years, facial hair is a must have.
Nice mini-series, Corporal. Love the practical 'grunt' applications in 'hootch-ology'. Ha, ha, can't take the 'mud roller' out of the ole vet! ;-)
thank you for the interesting knots I need to see them over and over as im completely new to this.
Thanks, man. for taking the time out of your day to share this information with us, I appreciate it.
Fantastic job. Definitely a video I'll go to in the future when I need to brush up on my knots.
Eric Rosbottom stop using taut line and use the trucker’s hitch instead. It’s better all around.
Thanks again coporal. ...once again always informative and respectful. ...thank you.
Thank you! I'm working knots again today!!
Well done Shawn, an excellent tutorial pal.
Learnin & burnin knots and others,THANX Cpl. K!
Outstanding video! Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication on our behalf, Semper Fi!
That is some great knots! They work for a lot of different things
Let's get Corporals Corner back at the top of the lists
I miss this ‘sergeants time’ type instruction. Thx mate. I got injured & had to pack it in early, but if I had a choice, I’d never have left the Army. These days I play with knots & ponchos to keep my sanity lol.
Yep Simply Good usefull Knots well demonstrated Thanks again
