According to the EPA, the average U.S. home has about 30 light fixtures. And most of them are probably filled with traditional incandescent bulbs. By switching to more energy-efficient models you can save hundreds of dollars a year.
Specs for bulbs used in demo:
    Incandescent
    Philips 40 watt Soft White
    Brightness: 470 lumens
    Estimated Yearly Energy Cost: $4.82
    Life Duration: 0.9 years
    Light Appearance: 2710 K
    Energy Used: 40 watts
    Price: $1.47 per 4-Pack (Home Depot, May 24, 2014)
    CFL
    ecosmart 40-watt equivalent Soft White
    Brightness: 550 lumens
    Estimated Energy Cost: $1.08
    Life Duration: 9.1 years
    Light appearance: 2700 K
    Energy used: 9 watts
    Price: $6.97 per 4-Pack (Home Depot, May 24, 2014)
    LED
    CREE 40-watt replacement Warm White
    Brightness: 450 lumens
    Estimated Yearly Energy Cost: $0.72
    Life Duration: 22.8 years
    Light Appearance: 2700 K
    Energy Used: 6 watts
Price: $9.97 Each (Home Depot, May 24, 2014)

Finally someone that gets it. People just want to see the video without an hour of blabbing. Good job.

You left something important out. If you are just using the camera as your "measurement" of brightness, you need to set the camera to manual.
Cameras automatically adjust brightness to achieve a certain look.
So without listing your camera settings, we can'at actually use your measurements. And since you left this simple stat out, you were probably not aware of it, so I wouldn't trust an "after the fact" admission that "oh yeah, I did factor in camera settings, I just kept silent about it..."

What about Luminance? the video camera will auto set the aperture or ISO to normalize the exposure and also white balance, so your side-by-side test will give a wrong expression that all 3 bulbs have equal brightness and even similar color. So what's your test means to show? Heat generation and turn on characteristic?

The LED is a harsh cold clinical light, much like the world today, so perfect fit really.

thanks for the feedback, @colbyson. you're right: your eyes do adjust to the light source, especially in the absence of comparative lights. fyi, we locked down the camera's exposure and white balance settings so the cam settings should be consistent for each bulb. thanks again for your insight!

Hi I bought a max 40w light fixture may I know what LED bulb I need to use? This will be the only source of light bulb in my room.

Want to point out that the camera is going to compensate light and color as you are only using a single, consistent light source. They will all look relatively the same because of this. Thanks for trying to test, however you need to put the light sources in frame together or the temperatures and lumens will look the same. They will also feel the same to you because your eyes adjust is the same way when no comparative light source is present. Try using film light/temp gauges too.

if you're comparing brightness you cant look at the wattage of a bulb. all the bulb manufacturers lie about the light output. you need to look at the lumens, not the watts. most of the time a 60 watt eq. bulb will have 2/3 the lumens of a 60w incandescent. so you'll have to et a 75w eq. or 100w eq. to actually give as much light as a 60w incandescent. this however is a great video for light quality.

My granny never like electrical devices....She thought the kerosene lantern was the best way to go.....Then she really bitched when FDR brought electricity to her community building those satanic electric generated Dams ..... Things never change for some people.....Progress slowly creeps on.....

Not really so slowly. For the first 6,000 years there was really very little progression. The most progression has been the last 150 years. Your Grandma was right. Electricity with smart meters is very dangerous. 5G changes your dna and causes tumors.

There's actually quite a lot of difference between the light of different LED bulbs, let alone against incandescent and CFL bulbs. Those where the heat sink takes up much of the 'bulb' area generally throw very light up and in turn produce harsh dark shadows. Some don't distribute the light evenly, so you could end up with brightly lit walls with poor or uneven light directly below the bulb. There are some with poor power smoothing and thus produce a stroboscopic flicker. Finally, most dimmable LED bulbs don't give a yellow-orange incandescent glow when dimmed.
On the other hand, I have seen some LED bulbs that very closely match an incandescent, particularly the 'LED Filament' bulbs that look like a clear incandescent, although with a more retro look due to the longer filaments.

Color rendition index is bad for cfl and led. Colors will look bad compared to incandescent.

If you're going to do a comparison. What is the energy cost and life cost of using each?
    - Regular bulbs obviously use the most energy, but do you save enough with the other types to justify buying them?
    - I've bought about a 100 CFL's in the last 20 years. They certainly don't last the 7-10,000 hours they claim too. I also heard that CFL's are subsidized, so I'm not very happy if I'm paying for it with my tax dollars without my knowledge.
    - I have one LED, that I'm very happy with and presumably will last me the rest of my life and it's on my work bench where I use it all night.
One big question, is how much energy is used for lighting compared to other applications around the house. Is saving electricity on lighting a significant savings overall?

123abcbruce yes, LED-s are worth it. and the main reason your CFL-s didn't last as long as they should have is because every time you turn them on it decreases their lifetime, same goes for incandescent light bulbs. LED-s don't have this flaw, they last longer and consume less power. during last 4 years I bought 8 LED light bulbs and all of them are still working

the LEDs are designed to break. Bought some and 3 already failed after 1-2-3 years. Exactly like the other light bulbs. This is a scam.

LED looks terribly harsh as the shadows go BLACK rather than nicely diffused as the other two.

Hi I came here to tell you that I can easily tell the difference. For once LED bulbs always appear to be directional light. That right there is 101 on why LED is no real replacement to incandescent in real world. I use 200w bulbs that normally you can't find in the store and they are amazing, nothing has come close to beating them. People seems to make these videos just for the sake of releasing something to browse through. Oh look another shitty comparison.flv Next time show how it lights up a room not your face
