    00:00 Introduction
First of all, one of the reasons we love classic men's style is that it's just that -- classic. Now, classic, when refers to clothes, typically means a garment or design of an elegant style that is not greatly subject to changes in fashion. About three times a week we get asked if there is a Lady's Gazette, why we are not having one, and if we can point people in the right direction, and why we are not covering women's topic in the first place. Unfortunately, we can't and won't venture to oblige to you.
00:54 1. It's simply not our realm of expertise.
05:09 2. There was no true "golden era" of women's fashion.
06:20 3. Women's trends are generally more extreme than men's trends.
08:27 4. Today, women have a much broader and more varied wardrobe than they used to.
09:20 5. The average quality of womenswear is lower than that of menswear.

But you are missing his comment that classic women's clothing is not of the high quality to last years, nor does it have the 'CLASSIC' , basic style that lasts years either. Women's style, classic or not, has too many iterations to pin down over the decades. This was an in-depth analysis of WHY women's classic looks cannot be pinned down as succinctly as men's. BRILLIANT !

Design Organize Exactly. Every woman who keeps a "classic" constant style is at times called dated and hopeless, excentric.
I recently listened to a pod about among others Diane Keaton, who apparently has made a come back as a style icon, after being out in the cold., and ridiculed. Real classic women are at times 180 degrees wrong, and then back at 360 and zero, and absolutely right.

Thanks for the mention and for your generosity!
I believe both of our channels are about tailoring and shoe making & how wearing handmade items can create emotion.
I started wearing handcrafted classic clothing/shoes in order to know my subject. However, as a woman in business, it's been a shock to see how adopting quality classic style has helped me move forward, and made it easier to keep up with the guys (literally, when walking in my oxfords, instead of wobbling around in high heels on the cobbled streets of Europe). Cheers ! ~Sonya

Dear Sonya, please do consider making some videos showcasing your style and how you go about it as a woman/your philosophy/making sure the quality is right/where you might shop including women’s shoes and coats etc. This video made me realize that there must be plenty of women interested, just like me, and it is so hard to find sources online when it comes to menswear for women. All the best!

@@CupOfTees Of course I can do it, staying focused on "women's tailoring" and steering away from attitudes of why a woman would ever want to wear trousers in the first place (a question which stupefies me, as I guess if any man could be a woman for a year, he would want to wear trousers too).
Tailoring a feminine jacket is an art of which maybe 20 percent of the (many) tailors I've met across the world is even willing to try.
Thank you for your comment and if I may end with an excerpt from museeyslparis quoting Women's Wear Daily :
A year after the tuxedo, Yves Saint Laurent proposed his first pantsuit in his Spring-Summer 1967 collection. It was an unusual design for a suit, which was traditionally worn with a skirt. Just as he did for the tuxedo, Saint Laurent adapted the traditionally masculine suit for the female body. The sleeves were fitted and the waist belted, while the wide pants were flattering for the legs. He added typically female accessories, such as heels and jewelry, but still had his model wear a necktie and felt hat.
American women are going to want to burn all the clothes they have when they see this ... Saint Laurent's new Vastsuits in men's wear fabrics are the sensation of the Paris season ... What a show-it could have come right off Broadway.
      Women’s Wear Daily, January 31, 1967.
      Cheers, ~Sonya

I never expected GG to create a ladies channel, but hoped for a women's channel w/similar information, style and integrity. Now I know why! Sadly our clothes weren't made well enough to withstand the test of time. Even allowing for the fashion swings, there are still classic women's styles that can be worn today without looking like a costume. Justine's channel is a wonderful resource for current fashion! She speaks to quality, classic style & sustainability, which if our clothes had from the getgo, I've no doubt there would be a Ladie's Gazette! Absolutely love your channel and applaud you for taking the time to speak to so many of your female fans. I think that’s something that many women would like to address. Some women really hate the way that “classic” is this often referred to moving target in women’s wear, difficult to define and even harder to hit. Every woman needs to navigate the expectations of how they’ll be perceived - we literally aren’t able to just put clothes on for work, for example, without taking every detail of social context into account. Do I look too aggressive? Am I sending the wrong message wearing a this knee length skirt? Do I look too soft? Too feminine? Too masculine? What color will the people in this meeting pay attention to, but not too much attention, but also not too little attention? Can I wear this again so soon? Women get a lot of conflicting messages about their clothes. (If a woman is already in a position where they don’t need to think about it, they’re honestly lucky.)
I’ve been researching tailoring to make myself a properly tailored jacket, I’ve been preparing to slow down and do a lot of the work by hand, and it’s like at some point someone arbitrarily made this decision that women’s blazers should just have less structure. One book I got my hands on even suggested that the amount of structure common in men’s suiting is “unflattering” on a woman. It’s a pain. Women want well-constructed clothing that lasts, too, it’s just an exceptionally difficult thing to find. I’ve only even begun to nail down my own definition of classic by making my own clothes.
Anyway, I landed on this channel because I have a general interest in tailoring, and I have no problem with these videos sticking to menswear as they’ve been interesting and informative on that front.

yeah if it is about details women have it so much harder. From the 1970 to mid 2000s you always had been safe with an overall suit combo for women be it the smaller clerk at the bank, middle management or the CEO. But the last years this look is considered more old fashioned and stiff expect you are an advocat and you have to wear more modern blazer and blouse cuts which are mostly more on the overized side and it is annyong for many.
Fashionistas maybe like all the possiblities but for people not so much interested in fashion it is pure stress. In fact I started looking fashion content on youtube for exact that reason.

I can see a lot of these points, but I'm at the age where I don't flipping care--my work clothes are my work clothes to be functional. But I had to change that paradigm slightly because now I moved up and don't work on the floor anymore. I have a desk job. I've completely cut casual wear out of wardrobe because I'm always in work clothes. Be it the fancy desk ones or the farm ones when I'm out of there. Which sucks in a way because they're tailored for men--the most durable coveralls chafe my thighs because crotch drop lol.

My second comment - one channel recommendation I suggest is Bernadette Banner: she is a dress historian on the TH-cam who sews clothing as a method of teaching, and I've learned a lot about quality indicators (since nearly any vintage clothing from over seventy years ago is likely to be much higher quality than your average garment today).
Another thing that I have found crucial is owning a swatch book, and a fashion textbook. I have two: "Fabric for Fashion: The Swatch Book, 2nd edition" by Clive Hallett and Amanda Johnson, and "The Fashion Designer's Textile Directory," by Gail Baugh. Both are good companions to each (though they are fine on their own) and build a foundational understanding of the structure and textiles used in our clothes. The swatch book helps with understanding the feel of textiles, blends, and weaves so that you know what you're buying, and why it's like that.
I'd also suggest, fellow women, to look into any of the myriad seamstress channels that will give you a rundown of stitch types. This indicates the amount of minutes or hours that went into a garment (thus often a quality indicator), and it is well worth understanding the difference between a french seam and an overlocked edge.

@@MikuHatsune12True, she isn't! I wouldn't consider Karolina a classic women's clothing channel either, also more of a historian, so that's why I suggested Bernadette. There isn't an equivalent to the Gentlemen's Gazette that I've found for women's clothing, unfortunately. I've learned a lot historical garment evolution, as well as what to look for in a wardrobe from Bernadette regarding clothing quality (which is my main gripe with women's clothing, if you couldn't tell :) ), as well as from many of the other channels suggested in the video, hence the suggestion.

the flipside of this is that women often have avenues of self-expression in their clothes that men dont. certain silhouettes and aesthetics are simply not at all available to men in the way they are to women, largely because theres no real demand for it i imagine.

  • @countalma9800
    @countalma9800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Hm, I disagree on a few points. Yes, there absolutely are "foundational" pieces in womenswear! Every woman needs a "little black dress", a pencil skirt, a summer dress, a cocktail dress, a few cardigans, blouses, a wool overcoat and, possibly, a fur coat, and some nice shoes of various heel hight, as well as some elegant flat shoes. Those are the absolutely necessary pieces for a lady to dress for office or social events. Some women, obviously, live with only very casual clothing in their closets, just like many men don't own a single article of tailored clothing.
Speaking of a "golden age" of women's fashion, it absolutely corresponds with the "golden age" of men's fashion, and that is roughly the time period between the 1920's and the 1960's. Those decades still influence fashion today.
That being said, certain items of casual clothing that appeared during the "cultural revolution" of the 1960's and 70's have become true icons of western fashion -- blue jeans, t-shirt, mini skirts, white sneakers. All these casual items can certainly be worn in a tasteful and "classy" manner. An elegant lady today can absolutely seek inspiration in the fashions of the middle of the last century, without looking outdated.
It is a pity that there don't seem to be channels and blogs for women that are the equivalent of some of the most popular menswear blogs and channels. Many young women could learn a lot about how to dress and look appropriate.

I can't wear heels and I own a sum total of one skirt which isn't a pencil skirt. I think the most important thing any woman can do is to find her own style and what she feels comfortable in that resonates with her. These days, I think that a nice pair of flat shoes and a good pair of evening trousers is just as acceptable as a dress at most evening events (probably not black tie, though - but how many of us attend formal black tie events anyway, and renting a dress for such an event is far more sustainable and better for the bank account than buying one that's just going to hang in the wardrobe for the next two years).
As I commented elsewhere, there are numerous channels on TH-cam for women of all ages who want to learn about style - Alyssa Beltempo, Audrey Coyne, Lauren McKinney, Use Less, Christie Ressel, Marie-Anne Lecoeur, Justine Leconte, Emily Wheatley, Emma Hill, Style at a Certain Age, Dressed For My Day - and those are just the ones I know of and watch.

I'm a woman, and I spent 2 weeks trying to figure out what clothes I wanted to wear. And I didn't. I decided to change my style from jeans and t-shirts to classic, elegant, chic clothes. But with Gentleman's Gazette, I knew what I needed in 3 days: colors, quality, it all was clear. I needed to make some adjustments with a tailor's help, but I knew all the basics. For that thank you very much. You gave me a simple foundation from which I can do whatever I want without any worries about: "Oh my gosh, what to wear?" I wear dove grey gloves with my black coat ;). Who taught me gloves? You did. Later I began to watch a few women's channels to learn about silk scarves, etc. Your channel has been very helpful and interesting for me.

Yes, I'm a big fan (especially for the excellent editing in her videos), but it clearly shows the contradiction in women's clothing. As a man, you couldn't show yourself on the street in Victorian or Edwardian dress without being ridiculed, even having a hat will draw attention, and not always positive. A woman will stand out in vintage clothing, a lot, so it takes a strong sense of individual taste to overcome the allure of current fashion, but I feel it is more readily accepted.

I think it’s proof positive of the difficulty and nuance in women’s fashion with how challenging it is to buy an article of clothing, with confidence, for a woman as a gift without her having to pick it out.
Short of small things like earrings, necklace or a scarf, it feels like a gamble.
Whereas for a man, one could gift a shirt, tie, pocket square, overcoat, gloves, etc - all a matter of what budget you’re into and with some degree of confidence if you generally know the guy’s style.

Women’s style ever changing, and it changes faster than men’s fashion. There are less rules too. Which can make things even more difficult. The closest you can get is just by following classic french women’s style. And taking a look at Coco Chanel’s classic garments.

-I learnt from women which colors go well together. Maybe because womens clothes are more colorful in general so they have to think more about combining colors.
-Justin leconte has some nice videos about capsule wardrobe. (The thing that Antonio RealMenRealStyle recommends) In her videos she's talking about combining pants, shirts and sweaters (not skirts or dresses), so as a man you could easily adapt this to your own wardrobe. For me the epitome of elegance. Nr 1 is Audrey Hepburn with her Givenchy clothes. Of course superb elegance you will see from the English royalty and gentry. The problem for woman is they cannot have a micro wardrobe like men as in one of your videos. They cannot have 3 dresses and combine them with vests and accessories and get a new attire out of it. They need new dresses every day and they wear one dress maybe 1 or 2 a month especially that woman remember very well all the dresses of their likes therefore no woman like to be perceived as 'look at her! she is wearing that same dress again' . So their wardrobe is easily 5x larger then men's. And yes there are some timeless elegant clothes with quality BUT they will need to visit the houses of Chanel Fendi Dior Valentino and the like where $1000 is where all begins with sky being the limit (poor chap will need a limitless credit card). By the way for men's style I go as much as possible with classic English. Think about David Niven and others. Keep your great work Gents. I learned so much and improved a lot.

A number of women TH-camrs (such as Jennifer L. Scott over at The Daily Connoisseur) are showing us their _capsule wardrobes_ or 10 item wardrobes. ;-) We have to be wise... yes, people will remember that wildly patterned dress, or the one in a super bright color, or the one with the crazy avant-garde cut etc. So those should not be a core piece. Variety can be had with accent pieces such as scarves. It can be done.

  • @julijakeit
    @julijakeit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think classic women's fashion would be around 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s with less extreme variations of 70s and 80s. Karolina Zebrowska is perfect example that some items she wears are brand new but still look period, yet can be worn today even by an ordinary person. 30s silky gowns, 40s skirts and jackets, 50s dresses and pants, 60s dresses and pants. Trends since 2000s seem to simply draw inspiration from the past decades. A gentleman in a suit still stands out from a man who wears a tee and ripped jeans. Same with women who like elegant and timeless styles, they look different from jeans and tee wearing women.

  • @Lylantares
    @Lylantares 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for clarification. I already know and love Karolina's channel as she is really an expert on women's fashion history.
Suits are more on the classical side for women in my opinion as I probably could wear the one I wore for my school graduation and not feel dated... if I'd still fit into it!
Same with shoes. The more "masculine" the shoes, the more likely you can wear them through the ages. Well, besides plain, single color pumps. They are a true classic.
Dresses and blouses tend to go in periods and what's considered "hip style" today is half of the items I wore when I was a teen. Fabric the same... lace was considered extremely dated when I was young, but fortunately it came back in the 201xs.
I would also like to lament the lack of quality fabric in many women's items and I absolutely loathe the fast fashion trends...

Good video. I find the presence of so much colour in women's style interesting, and even a bit counter-intuitive, as I would have expected men to be going for the peacock effect, rather than staying in such tight lanes lol. I find the only area where I stray from classic style is in terms of colour. Women get away with wearing a lot of colour, and just about any particular colour, whereas men are not given the same latitude in that respect. So I'll usually wear peculiar colours, but with otherwise classical style. I guess there is a risk of looking dated (e.g., with a dark purple suit, as opposed to a typical dark blue one), but not so much if what you wear otherwise adheres to the tenets of classic men's fashion.

Talbots is an example of classic women’s style today! Timeless trousers blazers blouses etc., all very well made. There are a slew of videos on You Tube for the classic 5 piece “French wardrobe” for women which in my view is essential timeless and classic.

6:23 call me outdated or old fashioned but I love those outfits. They are classy. There is this slim fit and cropped woman jeans epidemic on the streets of Chicago.

I can agree with most of what was said, but I will argue that corsets/stays are functional. Recently, women have been wearing decorative items and calling them corsets, but corsets (and before that stays) were undergarments EXACTLY like bras. They had a use and were less relevant to fashion in their looks than in their use. That changed when corsets had a resurgence in the late 20th century, but it is more of a costume now for the majority of its history.
