    This 1958 Plymouth recently started up for the first time in 15 years, but once it ran, it decided to lose compression across all six cylinders. I'm not giving up though, which is why I'm doing whatever it takes to get this car back up and running like it deserves! Think we can bring it back to life after having six dead cylinders? Stick around to find out!

    It's so hard to find these with the flat six still in them. My vote is to keep it in there, even if you have to rebuild it. They sound awesome with an exhaust and are torque monsters.

      I'm interested to see what, if any damage he's done to the engine in spite of getting it running. The good news is that those engines are meaty and tough - they can take a lot of abuse. But as with anything, they'll only take so much. I'll repeat it again: CHECK THE VALVES!!!

    I see a 1972 Chevelle at the garage too. This other classic can be road restored easier. Then we can use the Chevelle for trips to find genuine Mopar parts to fix and rebuild the engine (or find a newer one for the beloved 1958 Plymouth). Use two big extractor fans to vent the blue smog from the shop. Now I know why those nice Plymouths share Christine's curse. Thanks.😮

      Here's my take: if you find an original numbers matching ride, keep it original! If you want to heavily modify or customize then find an already corrupted example and go from there because it won't matter. The number of original rides shrinks every day, month, year... do the world a favor and help preserve what's left.

    Its a Mopar, that why it runs. Dylan, Check the timing, please, it could be wrong!
    I reckon pull head and oil pan, quick hone, new rings, valve regrind and good clean. Easy and good fun. It deserves to keep the side valve straight six and they can sound good with a proper exhaust.

    I have the station wagon version of this car,, it's called a Custom Suburban. I got it running allot easier than this one,, and I am now preparing to replace the engine with a 59 413 Golden Lion 4 Barrel out of a 300 Chrysler. Engine swaps, especially swapping an inline 6 like this for a V8 are all over TH-cam and boring as watching paint dry. Fixing an old inline 6 like this is a LOT more interesting. And hopping up an old 6 like this one would be even better. I would watch videos fixing this engine. I seriously doubt I would waste my time on another V8 swap.

    As others have noted, for the time you wasted fiddling around you could have pulled the cylinder head, the oil pan and popped the pistons out. Re-ringed the pistons, ridge-reamed the cylinders, broken the glaze on the cylinder walls, installed new rod bearings, and lapped the valves. Then the engine would be good for another 75,000 miles.

    The spark plug hole is between the valves and the cylinder. The oil will run towards the cylinder and the valve. If a valve is open it will run into the manifold. On those flatheads I always used an oil squirt can with a small hose. Stick the hose in the hole pointed towards the cylinder and give it a couple squits. No matter how you do it, when you go to start it you will have to take the plugs out a couple of times to clean off the oil. They may fire once or twice then foul. Clean and repeat. But I guess using starting fluid to wash the oil off the plugs is easier than pulling them out to clean. Just hard on the starter .

  • @socalltd
    @socalltd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I put 1-3oz of sea foam with an ounce of marvel together to free the rings in 2 cylinders each overnight. I do that when some people I know are having oil consumption to see if the rings loosen out and then the rest of the marvel goes in the crank to clean up inside before an oil change.

    oh, crap onna cracker! i 'bout fell out of my chair when you told that car to "show me". wowzers! that's a lot of blow by to be blowing smoke out the dipstick tube. i have never seen one that bad. i like how the smoke has a red tinge to it, "it's a mystery" as to why. the crush washer on #1 plug may be really crushed, that could be the reason for the leak. i'd just hone the cylinders, lap the valves, a new set of rings and bearings to freshen it up, rebuild the carb, give it a complete tune up and run it as is. i know it sounds like a lot of work, but it's really just a weekend project if you have the parts before you start, and don't find any surprises. i've done it a few times on fix and flips.

    Man, the first 20 minutes of this video were painful! I was so relieved when it finally started and ran, but I think it’s safe to say that that poor old 6-banger has seen better days. I can’t believe how sweet the body is… I haven’t seen many “survivor” type Chryslers of that era, but the few that I have seen were always rotted badly, especially around the headlights and rear wheel openings. This car is in amazing shape! So, sure… drop a 225 slant six, a 340, or even a big-block in it. A manual transmission would make for the ultimate sleeper!

    definitely, blow-by from the piston rings being stuck to the piston. it may well have fired up b4 due to crap/rust in the bores collecting round the edge of the piston, creating compression, but after a bit of running the crap was washed down the bores leaving with you no or low compression. if u can get it to start and run, it might free up the piston rings, by heat and use, if not then pistons out, a new set of rings a good clean, should do it.

    after you put oil in the cylinders, you have to let it sit for a bit, then you shoot the oil out with the starter(dont put in spark plugs until cylinders are no longer filled to the brim with oil, because if you put them in BEFORE you remove the oil, you will foul the plugs).

    If you do need to pull the engine, rebuild it and put it back in, those old 6 cylinders were really cool

    I think you should fix the flathead. i managed to find all the parts i needed for my 1958 rambler, and that engine is far more obscure than that plymouth.

    Yes! A V8 swap would be nice 😁 but maybe it's too of a common route.
    How about keeping it Straight-6, but with a modern engine like a 1JZ/2JZ (N/A) or an M54B30 from a junkyard? That would be interesting and maybe unique ✌️
    Good power with modern features.
    Anyway, I'm glad that car is getting saved!

      No.
      Just use the bulletproof flathead 6 it has.

    Compressiontest with wide open throttle, also sounds like with all the oil in the cylinder it hydrolocked a bit.

    Put some hi temp hvac teflon tape on the spark plug threads (as a test), at worst you can heli coil them and it my raise the compression.

    I've ended up learning not to use brake clean to start off of by lighting the engine bay of a pickup on fire!

    Starting fluid is to be used sparingly. It even says so on the can. Also says may cause top end damage. Spray gasoline in the carburator.

    If the rings aren’t seating pour some bon ami down the carburetor once you get it running it’ll help them to seat.

    NICE New Shop! But Why Not More Lifts, Than Just one? So that More than one car/truck at a time could be up on The Rack?!

    If you are going to replace the engine,I'd do a 318 but you may have to see what v8 will hook up to that transmission

  • @dougjones9698
    @dougjones9698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I get the comments about trying to make the old engine run, but realistically that big car is probably underpowered with it anyway. If your goal is to cruise with it, one thing I've learned from watching all of the TH-cam community on power tour - you will be happier with reliable v-8 power and an overdrive transmission.
    Don't cross the streams. If we see a Plymouth car I want it to have a Mopar drive train.
    I'd keep my eyes peeled for a wrecked Ram truck to donate a gen 3 hemi and trans.

    Don’t use the spray starter fluid. Use mixed gas with a little two stroke oil so you don’t wash your rings

    Put a turbo or two on that 6 cylinder, would be a pretty cool restomod build
