@@supersmilyface1He probably is, tbh. He never really received adequate love growing up. It must hurt seeing his mother so freely give it to somebody else.
Well it is allegory. Eustace’s old family (with Pa, Ma and brother) are criminals, while he trying to being a honest law abiding citizen, who can create something with his own hands.
Occured to me recently that Courage is meant to be seen as an adopted child or surrogate son. Eustace's mom dotes on her "grandson", giving him preferential treatment over her own family Muriel is often coddling Courage and talking to him like one would with their child Eustace is neglectful of him the way a bad parent might be Him being a dog is kinda superfluous to Courage as a character- he uses the computer, he (used to) speak, he wrote an autobiography, he can cook, draw, sew, etc. Many of the episodes of Courage have themes hidden as simple visual quirks (Freaky Fred being an SA allegory, Mad Dog "deflowering" Bunny by taking her literal flower and placing it in a pot- it makes sense this would be true of Courage himself.)

Especially if they once were good and Eustace was implied to have been a good kid(as least as a tot) before the mistreatment he received from his family.
Indeed it’s why the deer hunting episode is a favorite of mine. One on hand: Bambi. On the other: you want to see eustace get some triumph after see what goes through his mind in the episode. Only victory he has over his dad and brother is his resistance to staying dead.
I see a broken man we have proof that Eustace is gentle and kind but due to his mom and older brother verbally abusing him, throughout his childhood it made him bitter and resentful so Eustace buildt himself a "wall" hiding his emotional side, i believe that Eustace dislikes himself because he wants to be kind and helpful but his bitterness and sorrows, makes him egocentric and greedy he just wants to be loved and having friends but his fear of being rejected, prevents him from trying i see an addiction FOOD he needs to feed his emotions as a kid i tought he was old and cranky but as an adult i see a depressed man full of sorrows.
Yikes...I’m not disputing any of this because it makes perfect sense, but Jesus, after spending all this time thinking Eustace was just bitter and cantankerous outta sheer spite, to see his characters methodically and psychologically dissected like this, I need a few coke and whiskeys lmao.
You said a mouthful. Plus he takes his anger out on Courage because he gets more love and attention from Muriel than him. Eustace was even neglected by his old man, therefore he became one of the definition of bitterness.
As a person who had an abusive parent growing up, it really can cause a person to act this way. The feeling of helplessness and the longing for acceptance from a person who doesn’t love you can drive you to do awful things to the people who really do love you, and you won’t even realize you’re doing it. I was fortunate enough to escape my abusive parent, but poor Eustace couldn’t do the same…
Eustace's brother always called him useless. Now he's a farmer who can't grow any crops. I think it's safe to say Eustace is living the nightmare he always feared.
there is a theory that Eustace's older brother treated him badly to encourage him to improve and never allowed him to come with him because he was afraid he would get hurt
Honestly even as a child i felt bad for him, i didn't know why because in the surface he was just a jerk, yet now that i grew up i feel even worse for him

Eustace was always my fav character. You could really see how he wants to be kind in 3 episodes. The one where he gives his younger self the hat. The one where kitty locks them in the room and roasts them about how he is useless and she is fat. And the one where the duckling liked him. I think eustace is very complex.
@-.__-.__ Kitty doesn't lock Eustace and Muriel in the room; Courage does. Courage locked them in the room to keep them away from Kitty (who he thought would hurt them). The episode name is "The Mask" (Code 407).
When we were young we thought he was a mean, grumpy, greedy old man. When we are older, we see he's a broken man who was never loved by his family and never learned to love another, and tries desperately to cling to whatever self-worth he can hold onto while begging the world itself to give him a chance.

Eustace reminds me of Helga from Hey Arnold. Both have toxic families with one of the parents being an aggressive businessperson and played second place to an older sibling. Both have serious problems with jealousy.
Yeah they both have a rough life, It’s even worse for Helga since she’s still a kid while Eustace is a old man with Muriel and Courage who care about him but never showing gratitude especially when he tried to kill courage over a stupid blanket.

Someone pointed out that in the episode where Muriel was reverted back to a child (4yo I think? [EDIT: 3.5 years, not 4]) she was an absolute nightmare. Which yes, many small children are, but it might explain why she's a saint as an old lady, making up for being a little demon as a child. Eustace, on the other hand, was a scared little boy in a broken home who is now a mean, bitter old man. So they really are products of their upbringings.

It’s safe to say that Eustace is going through a rough childhood! His mother and brother are to blame for mistreating him, he’s a sweet man wanting love and attention from his family until they made him into a cranky old man who’s mistreating Courage and Muriel.

Too be fair. Whenever Eustace is planning on doing something bad for money he always goes on about stuff he’ll buy to improve his and Muriel’s life for the better. He’s a seemingly selfish man but he wants to be like his father and brother and to provide for his wife
You know, after all this, it was pretty sweet seeing him so happy to play his broken bugle in the last episode (he even manages to fix it even though he's bad at fixing things). So cool, he doesn't whine that Muriel's food isn't perfect and even lets Courage at the table 🥰

Even though Eustace is a jerk, I do feel bad for how his family treated him. He deserved a better childhood, but I can’t deny that there’s no excuse to how awful he is as a person. Him being screwed over is funny, but there are moments where he doesn’t deserve it. Even as a kid, I didn’t see Eustace as a bad guy, I saw him as a man who was mistreated, resulting in him becoming what he his now. Overall, he’s a character we can somewhat relate to, but at the same time, we can admit he does deserve to be screwed over.

As a child, Eustace is seen as the character that needs to be hated the make the show funnier. The one everyone loves to hate and see be tormented But, as an adult, you can really see the trauma and neglect that turned him into what he is. That's how you make a quality kids show with real world horror
Makes you consider the fact that adults are in charge of making those shows, not children, they have the capability to make quality that could be enjoyed not only by children but by adults too
@@elchicogore9517and that makes a show all the more quality and timeless. The writers of this show are brilliant. This is one of the only children shows I would rewatch as an adult now

Eustace clearly has the negative traits of all the members of his family. He has his mother's selfishness, his fathers arrogance, and his brothers inflated ego of himself. Horace was an interesting character I wish Dilworth explored more. He's in a grand total of 2 Ep's the other being the hunting Ep. In the Ep where Eustace finds the box of infinite money, his spirit seems to have grown more matured and humbled since the box went and doomed him. While as a kid I spit on his name now as I grow older I've grown to pity him. His past trauma is valid and shouldn't be forgotten but it's no excuse to abuse his loved one's (mainly courage) as he was once treated. It's thanks to courage that even while facing overwhelming heart freezing fear you can still face it to save your loved one's and that's what that crazy pink lovable dog has taught me.
I feel really bad for Eustace. He really isn't what people say he is. The reason why he's always angry is because he was traumatized when he was young. His parents never loved and his brother always bullied him. Everyone hates Eustace except Muriel and Courage. Muriel and Courage do care for even after all the things he has done. They understand how he feels and the depression he's going through. He's just like Naruto having people hate him when he was younger. Well Naruto's parents died after he was born to protect him from the 9 Tails and seal it inside him. And Batman also lost his parents when he was young.
The reason for his father is because you've never seen flashbacks of his dad abusing him but despite all that his pain and suffering was still too much to the point where his trust and his heart can see the good anymore
Now i know why Eustace is acting so mean to Muriel and abusive to Courage, *BUT STILL HE COULD'VE TOLD THEM ABOUT HIS SAD STORY, COURAGE HAD THE SAD STORY OF HIS REAL PARENTS ENOUGH FOR IT-*
You do understand life isn't as easy as you might think. Not everyone can just simply explain something, there's layers to it. In my case it took me a good few years to even talk to people i knew in person to discuss personal things. The only person i felt comfortable doing it to was someone i only know online. Also cause of prior real life experiences was why i never tended to. Ironically it was to a person who i had barely known who broke the mold for me.
the reason he never allowed Eustace to accompany him during his many travels was presumably to keep him safe from any danger. It should be noted that it was Courage who always saves Eustace from many danger with the latter always ignorant of it.
I don’t buy this. I know it’s just a lil “theory” that everyone keep regurgitating, but I’m pretty sure his family was just straight up mean and abusive to him
I'm honest to goodness glad more people are seeing that Eustace's awful personality was due to his bad family upbringing. His mother and brother emasculated him and were totally condescending to him. Horace called Eustace uselss and never wanted him to join in his hunting trips. His mother constantly dodged him and called him worthless.
Emotional Bagge-age! Hah! How ironic that Ms. Bagge in that one episode is a jerk to her son but nice to Courage, while Eustace is a jerk to Courage yet is nice to his mom.
At first I never liked Eustace at all but upon watching this video I realize he's just a broken old man who was abused by his family atleast the ones who stayed around if his mother and brother were hell to him I'd be afraid of what his father was like.
Eustace never mentions Ickette Bagge, but we know at minimum he was a swindler much like Eustace. And Ma Bagge always mentioned how Eustace could never fill his shoes.
Actually, Eustace is hiding his true capabilities. He is sparing everybody he hates. At 4:29, you can see him RIP OUT AN ENTIRE FURNACE. And that's only 1% of his true power. He could also carry his brother's gun, even though he seems much weaker than him, and he could also rip out a deer's scalp. So in conclusion, Eustace Bagge is actually really caring, because he is sparing people mean to him from death.
He's kinda like eddy from ed edd y eddy whereas eddy's older brother abused him and tormented him and eddy seeing him pull all these pranks and scams on other people eddy did the same thing by seeing what his brother was doing and saw it as cool. The same way Eustace treats courage by scaring him and all that since he got that from his mom who used to treat him the same way

Exactly:(
I wonder if he's jealous, considering his mother seems happy to see Courage (at least at first).
@@supersmilyface1He probably is, tbh. He never really received adequate love growing up. It must hurt seeing his mother so freely give it to somebody else.
I guess in someway sick way, Eustace sees Courage as family
Never thought about how Eustace wanted to become a farmer and grow his own things, while the rest of his family hunted, stole and cheated to get by
And his mom was a ceo of a very very questionable company that profited out of people misery
Eustace tried for a much more honest way to get through life in comparison to the rest of his family@@brandonvortex995
It’s clearly had a bad effect onto him.
Kind of makes him sound more respectable
Well it is allegory. Eustace’s old family (with Pa, Ma and brother) are criminals, while he trying to being a honest law abiding citizen, who can create something with his own hands.
the fact that Eustace treated courage like his mom treated him kinda implies that Eustace sees courage as his son
Or as himself. Like when that mirror courage was holding broke and eustace without glasses saw courage as his child self.
In a weird messed up way
Awwwww
Occured to me recently that Courage is meant to be seen as an adopted child or surrogate son.
Eustace's mom dotes on her "grandson", giving him preferential treatment over her own family
Muriel is often coddling Courage and talking to him like one would with their child
Eustace is neglectful of him the way a bad parent might be
Him being a dog is kinda superfluous to Courage as a character- he uses the computer, he (used to) speak, he wrote an autobiography, he can cook, draw, sew, etc.
Many of the episodes of Courage have themes hidden as simple visual quirks (Freaky Fred being an SA allegory, Mad Dog "deflowering" Bunny by taking her literal flower and placing it in a pot- it makes sense this would be true of Courage himself.)

Eustace was badly treated by his brother and mother and his father ignored him most of the time so the reason why Eustace, wants attention from Muriel is because of his father ignoring him and the nagging after food is because his mother, barely bothered feeding so it's pretty obivious that Eustace's anger and bitterness comes from his tough and lonely childhood he got married in 1953, to a woman who loved cooking and showing kindness to people two things that Eustace never saw in his mother so Eustace was finally feeling happyness, the reason why he treat courage like dirt is because he is the reason why Muriel pay less attention to Eustace and the stupid dog , comes from Eustace being called stupid boy by his mother there is a theory that Eustace and Muriel had a son who died young to an accident when trying to do a challenge, wich is also probaply why Eustace is being Passive aggressive towards children but another theory says that Muriel couldnt become pregnant, so Eustace never had the opportunity to have a son that he could raise better than how Eustace's father raised him, Eustace is a deeply troubled man who should have been seeing a therapist there is also a theory that Eustace murdered a man who Muriel had been dating so that Muriel could be his.
“As kids we loved the heroes but as adults we understand the villain”
True dat
As a kid I always sympathized with Eustace.
Especially if they once were good and Eustace was implied to have been a good kid(as least as a tot) before the mistreatment he received from his family.
Preach, dude!
Damn right
Yikes...I’m not disputing any of this because it makes perfect sense, but Jesus, after spending all this time thinking Eustace was just bitter and cantankerous outta sheer spite, to see his characters methodically and psychologically dissected like this, I need a few coke and whiskeys lmao.
@@johnnyrockit913 That is true
You said a mouthful. Plus he takes his anger out on Courage because he gets more love and attention from Muriel than him. Eustace was even neglected by his old man, therefore he became one of the definition of bitterness.
@@deuxbriggs Yep
As a person who had an abusive parent growing up, it really can cause a person to act this way. The feeling of helplessness and the longing for acceptance from a person who doesn’t love you can drive you to do awful things to the people who really do love you, and you won’t even realize you’re doing it. I was fortunate enough to escape my abusive parent, but poor Eustace couldn’t do the same…
Good job
Agreed I grew up with an abusive mother who never wanted me or loved me I relate to this character so much
😥
At least Murial is at his side no matter what.
At least he has Muriel who is not afraid to put him in his place when needed
Eustace's brother always called him useless. Now he's a farmer who can't grow any crops. I think it's safe to say Eustace is living the nightmare he always feared.
:((
Man…never thought about that. Another great point about his failure causing his misery.
@@Shagamaw-100 Then he compartmentalized all that into his hate of society.

He was written to be a huge jerk we’d love to see get punished, yet he’s probably the most deeply written character in the show
Honestly even as a child i felt bad for him, i didn't know why because in the surface he was just a jerk, yet now that i grew up i feel even worse for him

Eustace was always my fav character. You could really see how he wants to be kind in 3 episodes. The one where he gives his younger self the hat. The one where kitty locks them in the room and roasts them about how he is useless and she is fat. And the one where the duckling liked him. I think eustace is very complex.
He indeed is super complex with a ton of trauma
@-.__-.__ Kitty doesn't lock Eustace and Muriel in the room; Courage does. Courage locked them in the room to keep them away from Kitty (who he thought would hurt them). The episode name is "The Mask" (Code 407).
When we were young we thought he was a mean, grumpy, greedy old man. When we are older, we see he's a broken man who was never loved by his family and never learned to love another, and tries desperately to cling to whatever self-worth he can hold onto while begging the world itself to give him a chance.

Really good point!

Have you forgotten the episode Ball of Revenge when Eustace hired all the villains, including the Demon Puddle Queen that tried to eat Eustace, just get rid of Courage because he was tired of him getting everything and gets all the attention he was a true villian well just temporarily 😅
@@blackdawg711that isn’t cannon to me, Eustace maybe a villain but he isn’t a monster.
When a man is attacked,he builds walls to defend himself, and those walls keep everything out,the ugly and the beautiful alike...
I feel really bad for Eustace. He's so mean and nasty from such a rough life and it rotted him to the core.
Yeah. He's very misunderstood:(
"She never liked me"
"HI MA"
"YOU NEVER LIKED ME"
"YOU STUPID BOY"
LMAO but seriously it's obivious that ma bagge suffered from mental issues, and let it out on Eustace and Eustace let it out on courage, they are so similar i wouldn't be suprised if ma bagge was treated badly, by her parent's and that she let it out on Eustace because he was mentally weak.
Eustace is truly one of the most pitiable antagonists in cartoon history.
In hindsight, this makes a lot of those "What'd I do?!" moments from Eustace have a special sting.
The hunting one is immature and yet very emotional
Evil sad guy: He must be IMMUNE to emotions!
Naw, Eustace is already miserable!
This show hits different as an adult 😭
2:25 when someone I don’t like tells me it’s there birthday.
4:17 Optimus Prime made us love trucks with such emotion like this.
5:48 I'm taking it down Muriel get out of the way
Hey
But they need that tree, it provides for them!
Eustace: But that's my job rotten tree 🌳
The reason for his father is because you've never seen flashbacks of his dad abusing him but despite all that his pain and suffering was still too much to the point where his trust and his heart can see the good anymore
Doofenshmirtz, Helga Pataki and Horrid Henry can feel his pain
Glad to see you are still uploading
Poor guy 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Ikr it's sad :(
Now i know why Eustace is acting so mean to Muriel and abusive to Courage, *BUT STILL HE COULD'VE TOLD THEM ABOUT HIS SAD STORY, COURAGE HAD THE SAD STORY OF HIS REAL PARENTS ENOUGH FOR IT-*
He probably doesn't want to open up :(
There's probably the thought that he may be thought of as less of a man for opening up. He had that issue when he wanted to hunt with his brother.
He did though when he had couples therapy n Courage was the psychiatrist
You do understand life isn't as easy as you might think. Not everyone can just simply explain something, there's layers to it. In my case it took me a good few years to even talk to people i knew in person to discuss personal things. The only person i felt comfortable doing it to was someone i only know online. Also cause of prior real life experiences was why i never tended to. Ironically it was to a person who i had barely known who broke the mold for me.
Now we know why he abuses courage so much
He suffered so much trauma fro his mom and brother
And that’s all he knows how to do
5:01 rotten soil let.s eat
Lol
This is tragic but I laughed when I saw his dads shoes.
the reason he never allowed Eustace to accompany him during his many travels was presumably to keep him safe from any danger. It should be noted that it was Courage who always saves Eustace from many danger with the latter always ignorant of it.
That's probably true, but he called Eustace "useless", which is real hurtful.
I don’t buy this. I know it’s just a lil “theory” that everyone keep regurgitating, but I’m pretty sure his family was just straight up mean and abusive to him
He outright bullies him. No he was not.
Poor Eustace crying over his truck 🛻 at 4:15 - funny yet sad.
Man, I forgot how dark this show was for a "kids show", Eustace is such a tragic character. 😳
2:11 blah blah blah😂😂
Eustace was the black sheep of the family.
Indeed:c
I relate to this so much as an adult now omg
𝐈𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲
him and doofenshmirtz
2:09, 3:17 I wish we got to see more of Horace
5:05 okay nap time that frightened me lol
Lmaoooo billiard ball is CRAZY 💀💀💀.
2:28 - 4:14
My main point as to why eustace is a jerk. I'm shocked no one has ever talked about this episode when it came to emotional gut punches.
Ikr!!
@@Teknanam he really was a swindler? D:
2:30 Exorcist Reference: Spasm Scene but w/CTCD
Eustace-Regan MacNeil
Muriel-Chris MacNeil
Courage-Sharon Spencer
This is so sad.
It seems Eustace definitely had a lot of emotional… Bagge-age.😅
Eustace SWAGge
Eustace DIRTbagge
Who else loves Ma's "theme music"?
He's kinda like eddy from ed edd y eddy whereas eddy's older brother abused him and tormented him and eddy seeing him pull all these pranks and scams on other people eddy did the same thing by seeing what his brother was doing and saw it as cool. The same way Eustace treats courage by scaring him and all that since he got that from his mom who used to treat him the same way
Eustace is literally my dad baggage included
Lmao really?

I always loved Eustace ( my favourite character in the show)...but still, cutting down that magic tree was one thing I could NEVER forgive him for.
Eustace may be a massive jerk, but I always thought his mother was way worse.
