Absolutely fascinating! I've just watched the video twice in a row now. More than a youtube video, this is a valuable historic document. Thank you Prof Malan.

Gents, thank you very much for an interesting and informative session. Could you perhaps clarify for all the viewers when is a coin considered a pattern as opposed to being a variety?
I was hoping you would sneak in the rare 1961 Full Ground Cover Cent and perhaps the very rare A74 1969 Silver Rand with a springbok reverse. Are these considered varieties or patterns?

Thank you for the question Waldo. The definition in the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Numismatics may be useful in this regard. “A pattern is a proposed coin of a new design, metal or denomination. A pattern can be officially prepared by a mint or its authorized agent or prepared unofficially by someone choosing to do so. The pattern can be struck in a variety of metals, minted on a normal or thick planchet, and bear some indication of its purpose.”
My own preference is to use the term “pattern” just for official coins that was struck for a clearly defined purpose, but this is really wrong according to this definition above.

Interestingly, this same encyclopedia does not include a definition for the term “variety”. NGC, however, state on their website: “A variety is a coin that has characteristics specific to the die pair that struck it. Most collectible varieties can thus be traced to a set of dies.”

The coins I discuss in the presentation are therefore patterns. Even the aluminium 20c pieces are therefore strictly “patterns” according to these definitions, but it seems to have been struck unofficially or by accident as there was no official need to start using aluminium for the coins.

In terms of the two coins you mention, both the 1961 Full Ground Cover Cent and the A74 1969 Silver Rand are patterns according to the definitions. A74 was possibly an unofficial one, however, but I may be wrong. I have not seen any documentation yet that it was struck as an official pattern.
