  • Join Andrei Nedelea, our European Editor, as he gives us our first look at the 2024 Volvo EX90.
Volvo was one of the first automakers to announce that it plans to shift from internal combustion-engined vehicles to EVs, setting the goal for itself to only sell battery-powered models after the year 2030. Currently, the Swedish automaker (owned by China’s Geely) only has two EVs in its lineup, the C40 and XC40, with the latter also available with ICE power, but today it unveiled its first ground-up electric model, the EX90, a model built on a bespoke EV platform.

That huge tablet glued to the dash is distracting and unsafe. I own a 2018 S90 and don't need all that extra crap like I'm flying a space shuttle. What also gets me are these mileage ratings. Those ratings drop considerably if you have a couple of adult passengers riding with you and a little cargo. These vehicles are still not for distance driving.

Volvo did not do as good a job presenting the car as Polestar did. It's a fine car. But, Polestar had, I think, 3 hand-built pre-production cars on display with different trim levels. Volvo only had one. And Polestar provided a lot more information. Also, the Volvo presentation was, I guess very Swedish, but was very boring in many ways. Still, this car is impressive in that it has minimalism but still a lot of fine details. I will be glad when the big-screen trend is over and attractive multi-function buttons come back in vogue.

107kWh capacity. Hmmmm, that’s about 10x my current XC90 which has a real range on electric of 19-21miles (30-34km). This would suggest this all-electric would have a real range of 300-340km. How do they expect 600km? There’s a general expectation these days that real ranges of electric cars are about 2/3 of the specified range, i.e. after allowing for real world driving conditions ~(speed, a/c, heating etc.). So that would suggest a real range of 400km (250miles) - up a bit from my 300-340km extrapolation.
Also it’s unfortunate that the front of the EX90 is so very ugly.

I own an XC90 and I'm sorry to say that this vehicle is a complete miss for me. They claim they don't want style for styles sake and yet have opening headlights. They didn't include the grill because it would have looked too much like what it is: an XC90 with Lego brick LEDs and an iPad glued onto the dash. I understand minimalism, but the XC90 is Volvo minimalism done right. This is done all wrong. You get a more minimalist copy of the previous model for a price that's 30% more. Sorry, at that price there are better products out there and when I trade in my XC90, and if I'm willing to pay the high price this product demands, I'll probably look at the Mercedes EQE. You may not like the new platform but XC90 is not minimal because the platform was built for hybrid hence suffers from ICE restrictions. Keeping something from the ICE era for sake of nostalgia makes absolutely no sense. Go to Mercedes if you prefer their design. Personally I was expecting more aggressive EV design so I’m a bit disappointed it hasn’t gone far enough.

Volvo is not Chinese. People really need to stop with this disinformation. The company is Swedish and the parent company is Chinese. Geely bought Volvo to "unleash the tiger," not to make it "Chinese." They have plenty Chinese brands in their group. Engineering, design, crash testing, management of the lines and direction of the company are all out of Gothenburg, Sweden. This car was presented on Nov 9th by the actual people that led teams of people in the design/engineering of it. Not one was Chinese and quite a few were Swedish. And it was presented in Sweden. It's Swedish, not just marketed as Swedish. It's Swedish and they don't hide who their parent company is. It's not all that relevant in describing or assessing the car.

EV's are not the future, until they start producing real cars with real engines that don't take 1.5 hours to fill up 70% i won't be buying from them. coupled with the fact that Volvos have had electrical faults in every model i've ever had including my current XC60 T5, and as far back as mk1 V40's that used to burn their headlamp wires up, they are literally the last company that should be developing electrical systems!

It sounds like you might be better suited to a hybrid. Range-extending hybrids still have merit, especially in countries without a robust charging infrastructure. As for the future, manufacturers are poring hundreds of billions of dollars into electric vehicles. They will likely be part of the automotive landscape for decades to come.

@@apexerman1 I agree hybrids will probably dominate and would suit me, however it will be years before the prices of repairs trickle down to affordable levels. Teslas have a habit of turning themselves off once the head office deems it end of life , parts replacements can pretty much write off a car more than 5 years old, I think there will be a huge market for converting electric cars to fuel in the future, pay the road tax of electric but with the repair and running costs of a normal car.

The Rivian R1S which is a similar vehicle gets about 300 miles of range with a 125KWh useable pack. The efficiency is around the same, and expected for the class.
You cannot compare the efficiency of the ioniq 6, a much smaller, lighter, and more efficiently shaped vehicle due to being a sedan with a bigger, heavier, more square SUV.
In the same way that a Honda Civic will get better gas mileage than a Tahoe, of course an EX90 won’t be as efficient as an ioniq 6. And that’s due to physics not poor engineering.

The EPA cycle does not drive like a lunatic. However, since you disagree,I’ll play. Let’s assume you only get 260 out of 75 kWh Tesla battery pack. That’s 3.46 miles per kWh. It’s still better than the “ rated” 300 Volvo is claiming out of a 111 kWh battery pack. That’s only 2.7 miles per kWh out of the Volvo. Pretty poor efficiency out of the Volvo if you ask me.

@@letsgobrandon5800 judging by the battery size, I'm guessing you are talking about a model 3. Do you not see an issue comparing the efficiency of a small sedan to a large 7 seater SUV?
