  • Commencal Public Safety Announcement
Should Supreme DH frames be recalled? Please watch the video in full and let me know in the comments below.
1: To be clear from the start: I have no problems with Commencal. I’ve bought two of these bikes myself in the last year and have said since 2019 I believe these are the best-performing DH bikes on the market
2: Both of my Supreme frames are cracked. The black/white 2021 is being replaced under warranty - Commencal agreed to replace it within half a working day over ¾ emails - fantastic customer service. The silver 2019 model has cracks in three areas
3: I’ve made a few posts about these cracks and received over 25x messages from other people with problems, some people were unaware and only found the cracks due to my posts. I have a tiny following/reach so I believe there could be many more out there?
4: I contacted Commencal for a response on 15/6/22 at 11:25. I waited until 17:00CET today on 17/5/22 before publishing: over 50 hours. Bike park season is kicking off and people all over the world could be riding dangerous frames this weekend. I feel the responsibility and duty to inform as many people as possible over waiting until next week for a response
5: Thanks to all my supporters on this journey to create the most independent and open bike reviews online without the need for bicycle industry finance to run the channel. Without this, this may never have happened
6: I really do not take any pride or joy in being negative about any bikes or products on my channel. I would be much happier and financially better off if we never had any problems and had positive riding experiences and could create happy fun content for you to enjoy.
Please share with everybody you know who has one of these bikes. I’m not here to cause problems for Commencal or anybody that works there. I simply want riders to be safe.

Yes! I am aware I am giving away one of these Supreme frames that may have a common issue in a paid-for competition.
I'm not 100% sure what to do with this now, though, I think it is best to continue with the comp as it is still a sick bike with amazing components and will have a brand new frame for the lucky winner.
If anybody wants a refund on tickets please get in touch and I will refund you ASAP. astonmtb.com/
These products are bought at full retail price, and the reviews are funded 100% by competition ticket sales and donations. Buying a ticket not only gives you a chance to win cool bike stuff but also to support more and more independent reviews. This is a community effort, you can support these reviews, or get your information elsewhere which is always funded directly by the brands or through their advertising budgets...

Real MTB Journalism! I don't think people appreciate the concept of being fully self-funded and not taking free test products. This is the only channel I can think of that does this. I wish you could check out the Rockshox SID XC fork. I've had 3 with bushing issues. Finally Trek just bought me a new Fox 34 because they lost faith in Rockshox ability to send a fork that lasted more than two rides.

Rockshox sends brand new forks with no oil bath on the lower legs. Saw a video aboutthat some time ago and I had the oportunity to open 5 Rockshox Recon 120mm of travel, all of them completely dry from factory. Their excuse was "It`s supposed to make a preventive maintenance service before giving the bike to the customer"

Would be really interesting to see a hardness test done in the effected areas, seems to be always very close to the welds. Heat treatment is crucial with aluminium post welding and can massively effect how the material behaves. I am a former aviation metal worker so had to deal with this on a daily basis so seeing things like this rings many alarm bells

Currently warrantying a 2022 v4 Supreme in Europe (through Andorra HQ) and it's not a great experience. I opted for the upgrade to a v5 (btw the price for the upgrade is negotiable, managed to get 200 euros off the first price they offered). Frame was supposed to be available immediately. 3 weeks on I still don't have it. Various excuses and some obvious lies on Commencal's behalf and a nightmare of communication with their sales and customer service department who make many promisses and assurance that in the end have zero value.

Paul, you mention some cracks aren't too serious and should just be checked regularly. If people with those cracks in out of warranty frames really want to keep riding them, I'd suggest they spend maybe £20 and get some dye penetrant inspection rattle cans. This should highlight the full size of the crack, some of which may not be visible to the naked eye. Then with a Sharpie or similar the end of the crack should be marked. This should provide a fairly good way to monitor crack propagation.

I bought a 2017 Commencal Meta 4.2 and loved it! In 2020 I was changing the rear shifter housing and when I removed the cable clamp on the bottom or the rear swingarm I discovered cracks had spider'd out from the bolt insert holding the cable clamp. The rear swingarm was replaced under warranty but it took 2 months because they didn't have any replacements in North America. I wonder if that's a common failure point of those Meta 4.2 bikes? I'm 100kg and never surprised when bikes or bike parts fail but it socks and has nearly ended me.

  • @RexRaf
    @RexRaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@AstonMTB Are the followers who send in photos of cracked frames also mentioning the model, year and ~ most importantly ~ size?
My understanding is that larger frames typically have more issues - likely because their riders are on average heavier and can create more force - but also because the geometry of the frames and tubing and welds may not be proportionally increased to handle these higher forces (trying to keep the weight down).
Have you seen many smalls or mediums with these issues?

So, are the frames heat treated post welding? The manufacturer would have to tell you if you asked. These all look like fatigue cracks, rear damper bottoming out harshly exacerbating it.
Can anyone that owns one Rockwell test the frame and welds? The tool is cheap to make, or any engine machine shop can do it

Hi! Thanks for the video! I own a 2020 supreme signature and i also discovered a crack on the BB. As everyone here, i contacted Commencal and they offered me CR price. 15%-30% off on a new frame plus a big 20% off on others components. I mentioned them that kind of crack could lead to severe injuries if they don’t offer me a better solution. You know what they answer ? I would advise against continuing to ride this bike as it could develop further. « I would advise against continuing to ride this bike as it could develop further. » So now my choice are simple, stop riding or pay over 3000$ to get a new frame. To me it’s unacceptable. I would expect better from a bike company who claim they build bike for DHI champions

Currently warrantying my cracked Supreme and its not a great experience... I bought the 29/29 version at the end of last year, and now in Canada they are out of these warranty frames and only offer the mullet configuration. Commencal have told me that I am responsible for purchasing a new wheel/tire/cushcore and are offering a generous 20% discount...
Doesn't seem fair that I need to shell out $650 for a new wheel when the bike they made has cracked, and they cant sort out their inventory.

Moral of the story: MTB frame quality is poor from most brands.
EWS/dh events, they are always busy building new frames for their riders...
I was at EWS two weeks ago and the amount of new frames getting built during the event was crazy....
The most quietest Pits always seem to be rocky mountain, it seems like Those riders are having really good life from their frames - are they a genuine expensive brand with good Build quality?
I had an altitude alloy i rode for most of 2021 and it took some big hits, crashes and everything else a bike park can throw at you..
Ive been on 4 brands since and theyve all got stupid problems from design to QC.
Paul - are you going to test any RM products? Would love to see a super enduro altitude build from you an see if it lives up to the punishment

Doesnt every rider have to sticker main components such as frame and wheels? The idea being the bike needs to last the weekend and replacing those during the race results in a penalty of some sort and believe me you cant remove them stickers and just place them on the new frame they're near impossible to get off!

I guess it should inspire you to push not give you second thought whether it'll endure the next thing you throw at it.
