  • Here's a special compilation featuring one of my favourite general aviation aircraft, the Cessna 337 Skymaster! I've always loved the unique design of these twin-engined push-pull aircraft and the great sound they make. Below is a list of the aircraft included in the compilation.
    Cessna 337A Super Skymaster C-GBWT Takeoff (Babin Air)
    Cessna 337B Skymaster Landing C-FZBW
    Cessna 337G Super Skymaster Takeoff N75NX
    Cessna T337G Super Skymaster C-FJIL Takeoff (Discovery Helicopters Ltd)

    1969..1970 i was at 9SOS Phan Rang air base Vietnam and was a forward air controller and threw leaflets out of this aircraft. It was and is an awesome aircraft. Thanks for sharing this video with me. It done my heart good.

    Boy oh boy! That’s a trip down memory lane! I used to fly 337’s Fire Patroling for Adastra Air out of Castlegar (YCG) and was also based in Revelstoke. We’d often be in at Nelson as that was head office for the Nelson Forest District. Lotsa good memories

    Good videos. Brings back old memories. Flying is my favorite passion. Mostly of this is due to my father being an AF pilot for many years. He flew the hot stuff in WWII. In the 50's missions changed due to the cold war. He flew the military version, the O2. Most of the interior was dedicated to radios. He said it was an OK plane to fly but it was irritating that he had to keep an eye on the aft engine rpm gauge making sure it was still running. I do enjoy its nick names: push pull, suck & blow, engine sandwich, huff & puff, coming & going. Thanks for your post.

    This is very nostalgic for me as when I learned to fly many years ago we had a push me-pull me at the club which was used as a commercial air taxi. As a student pilot I used to longingly gaze into the panel and thought maybe some day I could be flying it. Sadly, it never came to pass. I haven't seen one for years.

    Awesome airplane. My dad bought a new 1965 337A and we operated it in his business 25 years. It lived most the time at our 2400 ft sod strip. We would take all the seats out except the two front ones and fly it to Oshkosh and camp out of it. At annual time a gear swing was a nightmare, in fact the whole airplane is high mx but I still loved it. Thanks for the video.

    This presentation is pleasure after pleasure after pleasure after..... it just keeps on giving. I could watch a CESSNA 337 take-off and land all day long and not get tired of it. Thanks for such variety with take-offs, landings, taxiing and a James Bond 007 styled segment from a way-up mountain view of the airport take-off way below. Thank you.

    One of the most unique designs in the Cessna inventory, and dare I say in general aviation. And the pilot in that first landing, in C-FZBW, absolutely buttered the bread. Looked smoother than glass.

      Bummer! That was a sharp looking 337. How'd it happen, if you don't mind replying? Don't tell me it was that mountain in the pattern, because that doesn't look like a steady way to go to begin with.

    • @TheHDAviation
      @TheHDAviation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not exactly sure what happened, but this is what I found from an accident report:
      The aircraft, a Cessna 337 Skymaster, impacted mountainous terrain near Crawford Bay, British Columbia.
      The aircraft sustained unreported damage and the sole pilot onboard received fatal injuries.
      Based Nelson BC, unconfirmed accident occurred on departure.
      It occurred shortly after taking off from Nelson on its way to La Ronge, Saskatchewan.

    great video. I remember as a young boy watching these in Kenya at the airfield. then going up in one. I remember two things about these planes, one was of an engine failed, then it was a problem, and the other was a gas turbine conversion and if one of the engine's was stopped it had loads of power to still do all that you need and more.

    Great video of a great airplane. These were flown by the state, as wildlife resource spotters in TN for years. Tough, reliable airplanes and either really cool looking, or really ugly, depending on your perspective. I personally think these are incredibly cool. Wish I had had more time in one than I had. Muy buen vídeo. El Skymaster es un avión que siempre me ha llamado la atención. Acá en mi país (Chile) en los años '80 había muchos , la gran mayoría eran usados por las empresas de prospección pesquera. Lamentablemente muchos desaparecieron en accidentes en los vuelos nocturnos en el mar, haciendo su trabajo de prospección.

    Unique sound of rear prop in turbulence induced from front prop wash.
    Take off length greatly increased if either engine out but no great tendency to yaw left or right. And of course lower rate of climb for obstruction clearance issues in constricted airports.
    Both fixed gear and retractable variants.

    The Skymaster is one of the most, if not the most, beautiful twin engine personal aircraft ever made. It had problems but it has survived to this day. It also played a good part in the Vietnam war. By the way, do you happen to know how many Skymasters are still in airworthy condition? And in Cessna, who designed this beautiful airplane? Was it a Dwane Wallace idea? Nice video, thanks and greetings from Colombia.

    Most 337s have doors that cover the main gear wheels, when retracted, but I have seen a few with slots in the belly, that stay open, like other Cessna RGs. Does anyone know what aircraft have the alternate type of gear installation?

    Even after modification ot give better cooling to the rear engine they were prone to said engine not lasting to TBO. To a great extent I think that was down to engine mismanagement by the pilot.

    Wonderful airframe! Have over 500 hours in these birds. I'd love to find one of the rare pressurized versions, do the turboprop conversion and glass cockpit, bring it into the 21st century. Too bad Cessna dropped this model, anything similar would be their Caravan, a Mixmaster on Steroids minus the rear engine but from what I have found out is that the rear engine can be eliminated totally due to the massive increase in horsepower with the conversion. Half the maintaince cost when one considers one engine and one prop eliminated.

    • @roughsurface
      @roughsurface 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is NO turboprop conversion, a few have have attempted with success but nothing certified

    • @Subgunman
      @Subgunman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +roughsurface, I have seen the few but as for certification I would just get an Experimental certification. The US NAVY did a unique conversion, used it as a pusher and added an extended streamlined nose on the aircraft with electronic "monitoring" gear in that odd snoot. It took me only a short time to learn to sync the engines otherwise you would get the ride of your life with poor fuel economy. What concerned me was on one of the videos on starting the aircraft this individual stated that the rear engine should be started first so you could hear if it was running. My instructor and the old Cessna manual stated "start front engine first so as to supply ram air cooling to the rear engine which was shielded from being able to take in air from the scoop on the top. We just used a small mirror mounted to the wing strut to observe the rear engine starting plus common sense told one to watch your gauges, that oil pressure must hop up real fast, if it doesn't shut it down.
      Happy Flying!

      Subgunman i've also done about 400 hours on my company's 337G. Enjoyed my time on it and it's increasingly becoming a rarer aircraft, at least where I am. Interestingly the front start first is also recommended as it has the least wiring distance to the battery. Regardless i've always started rear first just to make sure I can hear it start ok. Certainly see very high CHT's and oil temp on the rear engine in hot conditions during summer time taxi with any delay on the ground at departure. Sometimes to the point where I used to need to shut it down waiting for an clearance! The rear getting anything beneficial from 30 seconds difference of start order, well IMHO the cooling effect claim from the front prop is rubbish :) the slipstream corkscrews around the fuse from the front prop when on the ground so very little makes it into that top intake in reality.

      +MrRem7600, roger that on the hot weather starts! Was not so much a problem back in the seventies when I put my time in on that airframe, my FBO was at OSU's Don Scott Airport and there wasn't too much of a traffic issue then, we were off and flying no time flat. Today that would be a different story considering that there are a number of corporate aircraft based there today as well as quite a number of private aircraft as well. As for me today, haven't flown since around 1995, and then I went back to recertify. Had some issues with transitioning backwards to a 172 but decided to drop it to spend more time with my family. I wonder if Cessna had moved that rear power plant about a foot higher on the airframe if it would have made a difference in cooling. I would have bought and built a Velocity quick build but upon finding out that Greece does not allow home builds I scrapped that idea since I was relocating there, funny they are real anal over here, in the rest of the EU there is no problem with a kit plane. They don't even allow one to do a home build camper van here!

    Does the Skymaster require special training/skill because of its design? Does it have special abilities? Are props synchronized and/or does it have 2 throttle levers like twin engine plane?

      merc340sr it does have 2 sets of prop controls. I don't know about abilities, but I'm sure you can get away with a Multi-Engine rating to fly one of these bewdies!

      You may also note that the pilots often delay retracting the undercarriage. That is because the undercarriage doors act like a giant airbrake/spoiler, which is not what you want when you need maximum climb performance in order to clear high terrain.

      Fuel system can be an issue if you're not on top of things. Fellows I used to glide with lost an aquaintance on a low level flight for customs. Apparently the fuel selector was in an incorrect position and when banked over ran dry. Fascinating aircraft though.

    These guys have guts, flying these 40-50 year old maschines! You can get a skymaster well under 100K and a modern 4 seater costs 500K with similar speed/range.
    Is it safe? Are the running costs way higher? What is the fuel consumption of these?

    • @alexmelia8873
      @alexmelia8873 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They didn't get to be 40-50 years old by being dangerous. My plane is turning 55 this year.
      Modern planes are always going to cost more. Value is had in lower flight hours and newer equipment. 100K will buy you anything nice pre-1970.
      In this plane, the maintenance is quite high, especially for the landing gear mechanisms. And the Continental IO-360s burn approximately 10 gal/hr for each engine for a total of about 20gph, give or take depending on power settings and atmosphere.

    • @zsoltpapp3363
      @zsoltpapp3363 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am a total laic so i have no idea what 'quite high' maintenance cost means, but thanks for the info. Probably you have to know exactly what u have the plane for. If ya fly up to 10 hours monthly maybe it does not worth buying a brand new plane, but if ya have more flights weekly maybe a new one would be cheaper overall. Or maybe fractional ownerships works for new planes. What is the major expensee if ya own a plane? Depreciation? Fuel? Maintenance? Storage? Insurance? What did i forgot?

    • @alexmelia8873
      @alexmelia8873 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acquisition is easy. Maintenance is the biggest expense. Every year they have to be inspected and they follow stringent maintenance procedures. Common parts are very expensive simply because they are made for airplanes. My plane has an alternator with a Ford stamp on it. A simple Ford alternator. It costs about $700-$1,000. You can buy the same exact one at AutoZone for $150. I figure about $10,000 a year for random and scheduled maintenance.
      Insurance is about $1,000-$2,000 a year. Hangar is about $2,000-$5,000 a year. Fuel is averaging about $4 a gallon which equates to $50 an hour. Plus oil and banking money for engine reserves, it costs about $100-$120/hr to fly a plane.
      The numbers above are based on a 1960s single engine 4 seater. Anything newer, and insurance can double or triple as well as maintenance.

      @zsoltpapp3363 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, i am located in Europe i will dig into this, because i am sure things will be more expensive here, meaning the fuel. How many hours do you fly mothly? Are you changing the parts for yourself or are you hiring someone?

    • @alexmelia8873
      @alexmelia8873 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fly about 20 hours a month, but none this month. I am down due to a broken exhaust. Here in the US, there is some little stuff owners are allowed to do, but most anything major, you have to have a mechanic do it.

    Love the Skymaster! Interesting that all these pilots in this video seem to wait much longer after take-off to retract the gear (more than I see other RG planes use...) Is that a recommended procedure for teh Skymaster?

    • @alexmelia8873
      @alexmelia8873 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. The gear doors act as giant speedbrakes, so engaging the retraction mechanism causes more drag than just leaving the gear down. Consider it a fixed gear for the first 500 feet then nose down a bit and then retract the gear.

    • @markmclaren3836
      @markmclaren3836 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also, look at the mountainous terrain in the background. The aircraft has to take off, then climb steeply to avoid the terrain safely. You need all the airspeed you can get under those circumstances. The undercarriage doors certainly increased the drag. Might as well wait a while and build up some airspeed first just to be safe
