  • Let me tell you the story of Pablo Barn Cat and Toby the Livestock Guardian Dog. Toby is a Maremma who is as sweet as can be, but his enthusiasm is starting to irritate my barncat. Can these two animals get along?

      Apparently, Toby thinks the trade off of smelling Pablo's butt, uninterrupted, is worth the exchange of food. It is well known with cat and dog owners that cats love dog food and dogs love the cat food . . . and dogs are crazed over cat poop, which is a high delicacy in the canine world. Toby is not showing any signs of food aggression over that dry food at all. He would hover over his bowl, get very still, ears might go back, hackle fur goes up, he would snarl, and growl a low growl and he would do it EVERY time that bowl is full and anything came near him hovering over it. He has none of those, which is good. Fresh meat might make him more possessive, so still watch that. But, I think, mostly, he is mistaking cat tail wagging for dog tail wagging ~ totally different meanings! lol I think he would protect Pablo as much as anyone else on that farm, whether Pablo wanted it, or not. Maybe the cats are perturbed that Toby ruins their stealth mouse hunting mode when Toby gallops up to them and crashes into their scene? I love that saw horse moment where Toby was like, 'I'm in your spaaaace'. ha ha I've been around dogs and cats my whole life and I am not seeing anything that concerns me. The cats are free to move away or up and away from Toby, but Pablo chooses to go right into the pen, which indicates confidence in the relationship, despite annoyance at Toby's uncouth bull in a china shop type mannerisms. Toby is almost completely deaf to their subtle indications of wanting space. It's sort of funny. He is like Mr. Magoo to them. They are probably talking together like, 'I know right? I was furiously swishing my tail and it made him happier and jump closer!'

      Next time it's time to give all three a bath, use a towel to dry each about halfway, then switch towels around. The cats will smell a bit like Toby, and vice versa.
      Would've worked better if done right before they first met, but might make the cats a bit more friendly towards Toby.

      Judging by Pablo's body language he doesnt seem to be expressing any aggression towards Toby-dog. Based on his previous experience with a dog i dont think Pablo would be scared of Toby-dog. I think they'll become good friends given sometime. Its wellknown that cats dont love being over stimulated, too much licking and petting for example, and Toby-dog is very much still a lil pupper with puppy energy, there's the chance that he's just overstimulating Pablo with constant excited interactions. Also since you mentioned Pablo eating too much you can try getting him one of those food bows that have the ridges, they're designed to have the animal work for their food more thus making them eat slower, might help Lil Barnkitty get more out of his meal.

      Yea, Pablo seems super-chill next to Toby. You can easily tell: If a cat is fine with turning its back to a dog, it's a huge sign of trust. Your doggo accepted the cat as higher in the hierarchy. Pablo just isn't all too much into dogs or companions in general it seems. He's obviously a very confident and independent cat.
      But he's motivated by food and it almost seems like Toby is sorta trading his food for the companionship. I loved how the cat waited for the dog to sit down before jumping into his den. Dude, your cat is training your dog to behave around him!
      But yea, you might want to get another dog. Toby seems to be a little company-starved.

      and to speed it up have the dog on his back feet up, get someone to hold him like that. Get the cat and place it on the dogs chest so that they are eye to eye. hold the cat in place until both animals relax. once relaxed the cat can be let go and then the dog. this will reinforce who is boss..... the cat. if you do this a few times then all will be well with both animals and yes the cat will get first dibs on the food.After a while they may also sleep together. I have done this to several of my dogs and dozens of cats. The dogs are grateful that they are not the boss as they don't like being the leader of the pack and the cats are greatfull for more food !!

    The cats both have very good body language in this video. I think they like Toby just fine. Once in a while you'll get a cat with a more affectionate personality that likes to play and cuddle with dogs, but these two are not the type. If they actually didn't like Toby, they would never allow him to be that close. Despite their best efforts to convince us that they don't care, cats are very particular and deliberate about where they spend their time. They choose to be near Toby because they like him. Their ears are forward, meaning they're interested and unconcerned. They are ready to communicate if he gets too close for comfort, but Toby is also listening to them very well. I also don't think anyone's at risk of hurting each other seriously. As long as the cats are physically able to get out of reach of Toby when they want to, they're not going to lash out beyond warning hisses and swipes.

    Think about it this way: Cats are derived from the North African/Near Eastern wildcat (now Felis lybica in the new feline taxonomy). They are mesopredators, meaning they are mid-level in the food chain. They have a lot to fear in the wild. Dogs are derived from wolves, which are near the top of the food chain. They have little to fear, and they do ruthless eradicate the competition, including any wildcats (European, Asian, or Middle Eastern) that they find. Their reaction to a dog they didn't grow up with is totally acceptable. Many people think it's the cat showing dominance. It's the really the cat dealing with fear. Cats really do have a lot to fear from things like dogs. Now, Toby is a smart dog. Toby is allowing the cat to eat his food, and the cat is learning not to fear him. I don't think cats know anything about dog pack structure. Humans can figure it out because it's very similar to how we live, and even though the vast majority of people never seem to understand how to apply the princples, the concept makes a lot of sense. Cat society is a lot more fluid than dog society. Toby really wants to be friends with Pablo. You have a really socially smart dog.

      cats do actually have group structures surprisingly enough, but they tend to go more in the dorm/floor mates direction then a family unit(i.e. what a wolf/dog pack normally is) unless the cat grouping in question is literally a family
      and i seriously hope no one says anything about that a/b/o thing, that whole thing is a load of bs made of one study of a bunch of unrelated/unaquainted wolfs shoved into too small an area and has long since been discredited as a poorly done experiment

    • @sheenacat654
      @sheenacat654 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @J Paterson Have you heard of David Mech? He is a biologist researcher who has been studying wolves in Minnesota for quite some time. He has lately stated that the alpha/omega organization we have always surmised to be the norm for wolf packs is not really true. Wolf packs are primarily families, not military organizations with specific roles. A dog trainer was writing about these findings and says changing the concept of A-Z order will change how we train dogs from now on. That being said, I don't think Toby is an omega. He is just a maremma who is gentle and accepting with "his" animals/people but, I hope, is a big scary protector to invaders. Still, maremmas, according to what I've read, prefer to warn invaders away over attacking them. Kangals, on the other hand, another LGD, chase their prey down and destroy it. I watched a video of two of these big guardian dogs gently clowning around with their owner's toddlers (Omega behavior) the day after they'd torn a coyote to pieces (Alpha behavior).

    • @saram3449
      @saram3449 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      J Paterson alpha/beta/omega pack structure is basically a myth...pack structure is much more fluid and not quite as permanent as people used to think

    • @theodurcan2
      @theodurcan2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have a confusion. Cats comes in many sizes and shapes, certainly big cats comes at the top of the food chain. A lynx certainly holds his place against a wolf and probably scare away a coyote, or a fox. And if he crosses a chihuahua, better the later be a fast runner. Same thing, small cats are not match for big dogs or wolves. But, as a rule a cat is a better fighter, faster, more agile than a dog. Also cats are VERY SMART. And, as some mentioned, cats are alpha types, they obey only to themselves, and NEVER subordinate to humans. That's the trait I most love about cats.

    It's probably got a lot to do with the fact that cats don't really dig puppy enthusiasm. Toby wants to jump around and play, and that freaks cats out a bit. Once he settles down they might find it easier to get along. Plus they can take a while to get used to each others body language. Tail wagging means different things in cat and dog.

      Possible, but like as not Pablo will teach the puppy that she is a minion in his realm, and must bow down to the King. I've had cats and dogs my entire life, I'm 73, and the cats have always been rulers of the house. In fact when I was just a kid we had a dog, whenever he managed to escape would actually kill cats. My father brought home a cat he got from a friend who was moving. The dog soon learned Puff was the queen and he was her servant. If another cat came into the yard he would case it up a tree and she would knock it down, and they would chase it out of the yard. He also became a home body and quit escaping.

    Really as long as Toby isn't intentionally chasing the cats or harming them (which he's not) the cats will get use to him, it just takes a long while especially because he's so high energy. Especially as Toby gets older, he will get a lot calmer and the cats will be pretty chill with him. Let the cats smack him if he gets to close or is to excited around them, it lets them set boundaries and establish who is boss.

    I think Toby lets Pablo eat first because Toby came in as a puppy and Pablo was already there and all grown up. In his dog way, Toby knows Pablo is older and sees Pablo as being more established. May also be because it's a trait of his breed that they are protective of the animals in their home community.

    I have a shepherd breed of a dog who is residing with a cat inside the house. They never cuddled, but they both came to respect each other's boundaries, with some encouragement on my part. Don't worry, I think nature inevitably leans towards balance, it will come, maybe in a form different from what you would have liked or imagined but still existent and evident (and it won't involve the killing or injury of either party, maybe perhaps some social distancing at times).

    😂 Don’t worry about it. Toby is an annoying pup. Pablo is just training him too. (My largest pack was 4 rescued Rottweilers, 3 rescued cats and two humans in an 800 square foot cabin) it just takes time. You’re right though Lil won’t come around. 🤷‍♀️

    My cat takes liberties with my LSG dog's food also. He takes advantage of her love of cats to the fullest. However, when my cat just walks in the general vecinity of the poultry they will send up alarm calls and my dog will chase the cat out of the general area. My dog is 10 times bigger than my cat and the poultry will walk right in front of her but if the cat walks by 100 yards away they go into hysterics. My cat has only 1 tooth in his mouth and could hurt a full grown chicken or duck if he wanted to but the dog with the full set of bone crushing teeth, who comes and goes in their coop and pen, poses no threat at all. I guess the cat has the walk of a predator.
    It did seen to me that Pablo BC was play seating at Toby Dog from the top of the saw horses. Female cats are a different animal they take longer to warm up to others animals including people. I call them snobs. Our female cat is my dogs favorite but they are both females. Maybe that's the difference because the cat was raised in a house full of cats. The dog probably grew up with cats because at 1year old she knew to respect the sharp end of the cat and how to move around them. Toby will learn. I don't see him being mean to the cats he is just puppy curious and probably a little lonely.

    The food DOES help with the relationship between the dog and the cats! It's one of the steps of introducing a new cat to a household that already has a cat. Getting them eating calmly with a door between them, with a gate between them, then with nothing between them. Food is a positive, and if they can share meals calmly, their relationship is improved. To keep the relationship going, I'd find treats that Pablo really likes. Give Pablo treats for tolerating Toby and train Toby to be calm around the cats. Some miscommunication between them, at least at first, is bound to be normal, because dog body language is very different from cat body language. As long as their interactions continue to be positive, their relationship should improve. To get Lil more used to Toby, maybe try feeding Lil and Pablo closer to Toby. Get her used to the idea that good things (food!) happen when Toby is near and Toby is not a danger to her.

    Great video as always! While I think it's good to take note of these behaviours, domesticated animals don't always follow the natural instincts of their wild cousins. The rules of nature are driven by a need to survive. If a wild animal needs food to survive and it doesn't know where the next meal is coming from, that food becomes a point of contention when it's found. By contrast, a domesticated animal KNOWS it will get food at such and such a time every day. It has eliminated the need for food to be a point of contention. Toby knows that he'll be getting food the next day. He also knows that he likes to hang around Pablo--why not give him some?

    Hey Morgan, me and our daughters found your channel yt surfing about ducks last week. Beans saw the icon for Toby and asked to watch one and we've been watching your stuff out of order this week. Just wanted to say thank you for the fun poultry videos. Our 5yo has been asking to watch the goose/duck videos after nap time this past few days. It's definitely helped us stay a bit more sane plus learning something new with every episode. We're still on the planning stages of setting up farm and was considering ducks when we start. Again, thanks for the videos that you put out and you're definitely a cool farmer in our book. Much thanks and keep on keeping on good sir! All the love from Southern California ❤️💛💜🧡 ✌️

    Cat's body language: ''not a threat, let be friends'' aka ''I can see you from afar = we are friends enough''. As long as your dog wont get into their face cat's will tolerate= accept his presence. Cat that doesn't want you around or feel you are a threat wont stick around and you wont see him in the open like this. Social cats will move around your property with you but not necessarily stick close to you. Even when Pablo chases your dog away you can clearly see him squint his eyes = ''not a threat I'm just playing you socially awkward white cloud''. Always look at cat's eyes (NOT STARING = threatening) dilated pupils= excitement, scared, angry. lowlight? Stand: ready to bounce or relaxed? If cat's grooming = sign of zen moment = no threats = only friendlies around. When you see cat squint his eyes it means: ''understand I'm not a threat''. Also cats who are scared or threatened will never let their back exposed. They do that when they feel safe. summon of safety = sleep on their back; tummy exposed. From Pablo's view he and Toby are best m8's.

    3:41 I know I'm late, he probably thinks your reaching down (to unlock it) is aggressive, like another gander. And everyday he's successful in chasing you off! 😆
    If possible, try moving the lock up, or just using the top barrel bolt.

  • @claireisacamel
    @claireisacamel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As far as the food goes, I don’t think Toby has the trauma or influence to get aggressive over his food. Our outdoor animals all ate from the same big dish (an upside down trash can lid 😆). I think the shared eating space is probably more of a bonding situation than a recipe for disaster (plus you’re pretty present around them all, so I don’t think it’d get destructive without you noticing)

    Looks like they have it worked out just fine. It will be fun to watch as that relationship grows. I have had some odd couples on our small urban farm and I think it was mostly because of limited space the animals had to get along and it was fun to see how they worked things out. As long as nobody eats anybody else all is well.
