How wonderful that you have retooled your life to do other things you're interested in. I volunteered at a library for a few years before Covid and it was so fun to see all the people coming in and out. I'm planning to buddy read Soldier Sailor in June when the book is released. Looking forward to that.

Thanks! Oh I bet that was enjoyable and what I’m looking forward to as well. A read a long of Soldier Sailor is the perfect format because there’s so much to it to share.

I am thrilled to hear about your new job working in a library. I have been passionate about books for as long as I can remember and have worked in several libraries and bookstores. Additionally, I worked in a medical library at an Air Force/Army base. Over time, I discovered my interest in typing and pursued a degree in Medical and Legal Secretarial. Eventually, I worked my way up to becoming an Administrative Secretary. I just wanted to give you a little bit about my back story. I know that you will do great and just have fun with it you got this girl!

Oh, poor Suki! I hope her surgery goes well. My cat Sophie had this surgery a couple of years ago. She ended up still having some teeth left. But the vet said that even with all teeth removed cats do well and can eat everything usually without problems.

After listening to you talk about reading a series of Anthony Trollope novels, I had a go at "The Warden", which had been languishing on a shelf at home for a few years. I'm really enjoying the plot, so thank you for enthusing me about it.

I'm a great fan of Hermann Hesse and two of my favourites are 'Peter Camezind' and 'Rosshalde'. They are completely different in style and are both relatively short reads - Camezind will leave you thinking a lot and Rosshalde will leave you crying a lot. I see from your replies to some comments that Suki didn't lose all her teeth and is doing well - that's good news indeed and I'm sure it brightened the day for her Mommy and Daddy! Kind regards, Brian.

One of our cats has stomatitis and had all of her teeth removed in 2019. The procedure didn’t cure her, but with daily medication she is doing quite well. She has no problem with solid food at all. So, I hope for the best for Suki!

I read Brandon Taylor’s essay about Les Rougon Macquart series in The London Review of Books too, it was brilliant. You’re for a treat with Zola, he was a Master! I read The Discomfort of Evening, it was huge here in the Netherlands. Liked it, it’s grim, but well written. Congratulations on the library job! I’m a librarian by profession myself, so yay! 📚📚📚

Leo, I’ve started the Zola. Thanks to Sarah for volunteering the suggestion that I read a little about the Second Empire before starting in! Oh, I’m really glad to have that feedback from you about Rijneveld. This second book is grim too. I got a better perspective after reading the Guardian review. I’m in it. It’s not pleasant. And yet, I keep reading. 🥺. Oh that’s right, Leo. You’re a librarian! The 2 women I interviewed with are librarians..well, one of them is in a Masters program to become a librarian (that’s how you do it in the US). I can’t wait to give my library job a go!

I loved Trollope’s cheeky asides to the “dear reader “ in the Palliser series. You are in for a treat. And I cannot tell you how excited I am that you are starting the Rougon Macquart series. You may want to do a quick Wikipedia look up of the Second Empire when this takes place because it did help me orient to the stakes involved with the war. I hope you are intrigued to continue! And congratulations so much on your new roles and adventures.

Cheeky is the perfect way to put it, Sarah. I’m now further along and oh, the narrator has opinions too. It’s too funny! And THANK YOU so much for the advice about looking into the Second Empire.
Your timing is great because I had dipped into the book and just didnt think it was up for it. I didn’t understand the setting, etc. Then, when I read your comment, I did do some reading and then went back to the book, and now I’m in it. Too early to tell how I’m feeling about it, but I’m so glad for the advice! Thanks for the well wishes on my next phase. It’s crazy to be experimenting with new things to get into.

I love Rijneveld! It is a very difficult topic, but his writing is phenomenal. You can see that he is a poet, his previously written bundles of poems are also awarded and he is still working on a farm in the Netherlands, that's maybe why the theme is always coming back. But I do understand that it is not for everybody. Greetings from Germany! P.S.: I found your videos last week and immediately ordered a book by Trollope.
